 install Ad-Aware
By Scott Arpajian

So you've downloaded Ad-Aware and now are ready to take the first step in keeping your computer safe and spyware free. Fortunately, installing the program is very easy. We've created this step-by-step guide to assist you along the way.

Step 1

If you chose "Save" when you were prompted by the File Download window, then locate the icon for the Ad-Aware setup file. Normally, it can be found right on your desktop. The filename is aawsepersonal.exe. If you saved the file to a different folder on your computer, then open that folder and click the Ad-Aware setup file icon.

If you chose "Open" when you were prompted, then the setup program already should have started running once the download was complete. You can proceed directly to Step 2.

Step 2

You should be looking at the first window of the installation process. At this point, you may want to close any other applications running on your computer before proceeding. Once you're ready, click the Next button to continue.

Step 3

The next screen is the end-user license agreement, also referred to as the "EULA." It always is important to read these agreements before installing any piece of software on your computer--don't let the legalese frighten you. When you're ready to continue, check the box marked, "I accept the license agreement," then click the Next button.

Step 4

The next screen allows you to choose the folder where Ad-Aware will install. Normally, you do not need to change anything here. If you'd like to install the program to a different folder than the default location, click the Browse button and select a new destination directory. Otherwise, click the Next button to proceed.

Step 5

On this screen, you need to decide whether you want to install Ad-Aware for all users or just for yourself. If you're installing Ad-Aware at home, you'll probably want to choose the option labeled "Anyone who uses this computer." If you're installing Ad-Aware at work, you should check with your network administrator to see which setting he or she prefers.

Step 6

You'll see one additional screen telling you installation is about to begin. Click the Next button to proceed.

Step 7

The final screen appears once all of Ad-Aware's files have been installed. You'll be prompted with three choices, all of which are optional. We strongly recommend you select the second option for immediately updating the program's spyware definitions. This is very important in ensuring Ad-Aware scans your PC for the very latest spyware problems. If you'd like to perform a full-system scan right away, leave the first option checked as well. Finally, click the Finish button to complete your installation.

You're finished! If you selected the update or full-scan options in the previous step, Ad-Aware will start running immediately. Good luck, and congratulations on taking the first step toward keeping your system safe and spyware-free!
