"You Better Avoid SpyBot S&D Like The Plague."
Pros
It did fix a few problems in the beginning, But after that the honeymoon was over.
Cons
Spybot crippled my computer almost beyond repair.
Summary
When i first installed Spybot i was impressed with the initial scan. It found a few things and deleted them. I even donated a few bucks to show my appreciation. Then after about a week things started to go wrong. When i would perform a scan i would delete everything that it found that was bad "allegedly". Then i went to open Internet Explorer browser and my homepage had disappeared. I also couldn't open the tools menu with internet options etc. So then i thought maybe i'm infected so i opened Spybot and scanned again. In the middle of the scan my computer just shut down and restarted. After boot up i opened Spybot to scan again, This time the scan completed and i deleted what it found. But to complete the process i had to restart the computer. Once my computer made it back to the desktop my taskbar and start button was missing. So i pressed ctrl alt delete to bring up task manager to shut down the computer because i was stuck at the desktop. To make a long story short i was forced to do a recovery reinstall of my operating system. Spybot is not a good program, and i see all these glowing reviews about it at different websites which is what suckered me into using it in the first place. I am surprised the makers of Spybot have not been arrested by now they have ruined many computers. I also believe these positive reviews are from Spybot employees. And who ever leaves a review about a bad experience gets negative replies. I will never use Spybot Search & Destroy ever again, and the money i donated i will just count it as a loss we live and learn.

Sounds as if you had a bootkit infection, which is something that needs a little more hardcore removal, such as ComboFix or TDSSKiller. Spybot and Malware bytes did not isolate one that I had, though Avast did. It was not Spybot that screwed up your compyter; it was an infection that gets into the OS and cripples it. However, you should know better than to use IE!
