Version: Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3
"Excellent Program."
Pros: Quick scan, helpful info on most spyware/adware/malware. Loads of advanced features such as "Secure Shredder" which will "shred" your files to the point that they cannot be recovered (good for confidential documnets and stuff). "immunizes" your system, which blocks many spyware threats. You can handle BHO's for IE (such as toolbars and plugins) edit your win.ini and stuff like that. You can use it to manage your ActiveX controls (for ActiveX and BHO's it will tell you if any of them are bad) You can block hundreds of spyware homesites by using the "hosts" feature, which adds all the websites to your hosts file (the file windows uses to help navigate the web) and makes them all point to IP address: 127.0.0.1 which is your basically nothing. THAT MEANS: if i added this to my hosts file "download.com [TAB]127.0.0.1" then I would NO LONGER be able to connect to download.com, this means that those spyware sites cannot connect to your computer anymore. It has many other features that are nice to have, but arent needed. OH, its FREE. completely FREE! no nag windows, no "PRO" version, no "Trial version". FREE!
Cons: Its just plain ugly! and the advanced features could be dangerous! handle with care! it doesnt find as much as Ad-Aware and it sometimes requires a reboot to fix all the problems. Does not warn you if your definitions file is outdated. Does not warn you if you need to immunize.
