good at removing a variety of spyware including some of the pesky types others leave behind, like virtumonde for example.
Cons
its database is just not large enough and in my view it is just not reliable enough to be a full time 24 /7 program, as far as its, tea timer and immunization features go, read below....

spybot has been around a long time, and deserves to be around longer, but the days where it can be a reliable full time app are gone in my view.
i have had very bad luck with its tea timer and immunization features, every time i enabled it my other accounts on vista would be erased, when i uninstalled spybot they came back as if nothing ever happened. so i ONLY use it as an on demand anti spy program, i did not download its tea timer feature, immunization updates, or security center integration. i only use it as an on demand scanner which is its most affective use in my judgment. -

Scan speed is a little slow. I can find nothing else wrong.
Summary
Both immunization and the on-demand scan are able to access a different browsers , including IE7 or Firefox that I use. Easy user interface.
Works great to repair registry and fix browser hijacks.
Immunize feature blocks the installation of spyware before it occurs.

Simple, effective, and the 'Tea Timer' is great peace of mind.
Cons
Some false positives but once you know what they are it's no big deal. Rather a false positive than let things through.

Spybot can interfere with updates for Norton and other program installations since it attempts to warn you of programs trying to make registry changes (allow or deny)

Want to know why they rate this program poorly? Installl Spybot and come back, and a little popup will give you the answer! It's nice to know which sites are trying to infect you with spyware!

Pros
Free. Scans for a couple hundred thousand bad files and apps. Reasonably fast. Seems to be constantly updated with new malware to scan for. Have used it on several computers with no problems.
Cons
Interface is not especially intuitive. Doesn't catch some of the stuff that Norton does, although this hasn't gotten the computer in trouble so far. Slows boot up, but so does Norton.
Summary
I've used Spybot for several years with good results and no problems on half a dozen computers (PCs running XP). Would recommend to anyone who can't afford Norton or McAfee. I run it alongside Norton and Spybot occasionally catches a bad actor that Norton misses, although it's usually the other way around. Always good to have second spyware/virus program running. It does slow down the computer a bit, especially on boot up. I like that it pops up a warning box if any program tries to modify or install something in the Registry. Best of all: it's FREE. And that's a big plus these days.
