"Great Program With Minor Faults"
Version: Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.6.2
Pros
Effective, many useful features (including full automation and browser immunization), free
Cons
Slightly buggy, not the easiest to use.
Summary
As an experienced pc technician, I highly recommend it for all pcs for its very low impact on system resources and admirable effectiveness. Those with higher-end systems can feel free to supplement or even skip Spybot for Spyware Doctor or Webroot Spysweeper (which are both highly effective and include proactive defense, but consume significant resources, especially Spyware Doctor).
The program can be fully automated, and includes many other useful features mentioned in cnet's review. I disagree with a number of relatively recent reviews that claim Spybot is relatively mediocre in effectiveness; on the contrary, it is very effective. A couple of reviews pegged Windows Defender slightly over Spybot, which I find utterly laughable: WD is next to useless in my experience. I'm not sure what their problem is...
On the negative, it is a bit involved for the average user to figure it out, so be forewarned (Spysweeper or Spyware Doctor may be a better choice for computer novices). The TeaTimer was annoyingly intrusive and queried the user about information most people wouldn't know enough to answer properly, though I cannot comment on it in current versions since I disabled it long ago and it may have been improved since then. Spybot suffers from occasional bugs, though nothing very serious. On Vista for example, it has an ongoing error (as of this writing) during installation when cooperating with Security Center (not a problem with XP's Security Center), though in fairness what DOES work on Vista without problems?! It also sometimes falsely reports being unable to delete folders and/or registry entries pertaining to spyware, and suggests running on the next system startup... but upon examination it almost always seems to have succeeded despite the warning (and consequently the next startup scan usually finds nothing, which may be the reason some reviewers were misled into believing it is not effective). This bug really should be mended asap, though.
As for incompatibilities with McAfee and other security suites, just deactivate the TeaTimer and it will work fine. -
"liked it once but may not again"

"Donate-And-Always-Free_ Continuous Service"
Version: Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.6.2
Pros
Pros, yes, these guys are the best -the program alerts as YOU-the user-sets. ALL choices are at the users "command" It's easy to use by all aspects, even the set up. It's free, always has been, but donate-These_Guys_Are_The_Best!
Cons
nothing-nada-zilch-0zero-()bigFatZero *It's my slow dial-up ISP I feel is a con.
Nothing I can do about it - Sb_S&D doesn't load a bunch of (s-crap) on its page, see, another PLUS. *-* Some of uz are still stuck using _dial-up_Summary
The Full Spectrum (-vs- AdAware)
- every aspect IS User Choice. ie Like the original intent of The "Internet"
*-* Some of uz are still stuck using _dial-up_ -
"Did like the way it popped on the screen at will.."
Version: Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.6.2
Pros
None didn't have in the computer that long.
Cons
None didn't have in the computer that long.
Summary
I don't like programs that feel that they to to pop up on the screen to remind me of some
useless information. I may not be a computer wiz but I know what bugs the hell out of
me......
