"Variety of voices, converts to WAV & free!"

    April 13, 2003  |

    Version: Speakonia 1.3.5

    Summary

It has a few minor troubles with reading but the problems end there. With a bit of tweaking, I can get the 1st American voice to sound quite good. The best feature, I think, is the ability to convert to WAV format. There are other similair programs but this is totally free!

    "Not Bad"

    March 20, 2003  |

    Version: Speakonia 1.3.5

    Summary

Using the Microsoft speech engine (included), it's subject to the pro's and cons of speech
quality accordingly. It doesn't sound quite natural and is a little inconsistent in the
handling of paragraph endings, while too consistent in handling punctuation (the
repetition of "he said." in a news page kind of got to my head).
The flexibility is good, you can alter the speech in both tone and speed till you get
something you like (I've got it to the sound of a peppy New England AM radio
announcer). It can be set to automatically read text upon entry to the clipboard or load a
    plain text file.
It does have a manage exception dictionary ("Lexicon") where you can define the
    pronunciation of individual words.
While I am impressed with this software at its price, I note that the ability to output a
WAV file is the only real improvement in this technology I can note in it since the 1993
    DOS version of Monologue.

"just mainly for English, but there really good"

    November 7, 2002  |   By wniehues

    Version: Speakonia 1.3.5

    Summary

If you want to have lunch at the computer and some online-texts read out to (while you tackle that overstuffed sandwich and can't direct your attention towards the screen since otherwise the ketchup might drip on your pants), this is a good solution: it reads out everything to you that you give it, with appropriate stresses etc....even nonsense. E.g. as soon as you copy text into the clipboard, it reads it. It only uses English pronunciation, but with some phonetic tricks, you can make it say some phrases from other languages (like the German cheers "how veck dane shice!" = "Hau weg den Scheiss"). Free, rather small, works - ok.
