"ABANDONED BY LYCOS YEARS AGO"
Version: Sonique 1.96
Pros
THIS WAS THE BEST MEDIA PLAYER BY FAR IN IT'S DAY
Cons
LYCOS BOUGHT IT, GOT RID OF THE TOP NOTCH PROGRAMMERS, THEN ABANDONED IT YEARS AGO, WIPING THE COMMUNITY FORUM OF PLUGIN AND SKIN WRITERS, AND FAITHFUL USERS ALONG THE WAY FROM GOOD MEASURE.
NOW JUST A FOND MEMORY OF A PLAYER THAT STILL HASN'T BEEN BETTERED BY ANYONE. NOW IT'S JUST A BUGGY UNSTABLE PLAYER ON WINDOWS XP & NOT WORTH BOTHERING WITH.
THE ORIGINAL WRITERS CREATED QUINISSENTIAL MEDIA PLAYER, BUT IT WAS NEVER ANYTHING LIKE SONIQUE, AND NOW THAT TOO IS DEAD.

"I hate to write one of "those" reviews..."
Version: Sonique 1.96
Pros
The pitch control was fun; it lets you speed up or slow down whatever is playing, with interesting results.
Played everything just fine, although... *points to cons list*
Cons
Here's where it turns into one of "those" reviews, the one where I had some probably fairly unique issue that makes me have to give the whole thing a terrible rating...
After I found the download, it installed just fine, and started playing things just like it should. It's true what they say about the volume knob being terrible, but that's easily taken care of with a mouse wheel.
I couldn't tell whether the EQ bars were doing anything, but after setting them to their extreme possitions, and hearing no difference, I decided they weren't.
There was no way to make it BIG. I have no trouble reading small things, but the Sonique player seemed to feel that it was necessary to have everything be as tiny as possible, with no way to enlarge it. :(
But here's the real reason it bombed on my review... I had read other reviews talking about it's amazing sound quality. That's what got me to try it in the first place. So I went to do a comparison with Windows Media Player. I decided to use the same song for comparison, but for some reason, it wouldn't play in Windows Media. So I closed the Sonique player, and tried again; failure. So I uninstalled Sonique; failure. I found a playlist file in the folder that the song was in (so I deleted it); failure. So now my test playlist doesn't work. Bummer.
I know these "specific issue" reviews are lame, but there it is. Maybe it was a unique problem, maybe not. I'd be interested to know if anyone else ran into similar issues.

Cons

"Wow!"
Version: Sonique 1.96
Pros
Memory usage is minuscule compared to other media players. 3 Different skin modes so you can pick your favorite. Simple interface, and dozens of skins available. Googled "sonique download" and found a legitimate link easily
Cons
It'd be nice if it could do video as well but I'm not complaining.

"LIE-COS LIE-COS LIE-COS LIE-COS LIE-COS"
Version: Sonique 1.96
Pros
Yes... "PROS" --- Short for "PROStitutes".
Cons
These Lycos clowns are LOWLIFE SCUMSUCKERS. Sub-Human GARBAGE. They're probably Spammers as well. Shame on you you Cnet for being "in Cahoots" with these DIRTBAGS. By doing so, YOU ONLY UNDERMINE YOUR OWN CREDIBILITY. Well, off I go now to spread endless negativity about them AND AND to the multitudes. Don't think for a second that it won't have an effect.

"This is deliberate deception by Lycos"
Version: Sonique 1.96
Pros
NONE. THIS IS FRAUDULANT DECEPTION
Cons
There is no download. It is deliberate deception by Lycos to get you to subscribe. Isn't there a law against this? And, don't CNET Download.com have a responsibility for this kind of fraud???
