"The program is clearly for non-professionals"

    March 30, 2010  |   By jtomcoburn

    Version: SmartDraw 2010 2010.12

    Pros

The program has a great library of to scale items, particularly for home design. It is quick to learn and with practice you can make some really nice looking drawings.

    Cons

The program has many problems. Dimension lines are so fine when you print them you cannot see them. There layer system for drawings is a mess. Things move from one layer to another and you don't know why. The grouping of objects is bad, etc.

    Summary

They need to make the dimensions consistent and the allow the user to define what they look like. They need to make the management of layers easier. The grouping of objects makes these huge graphics that cannot be aligned or spaced with other objects. It is difficult to select objects that are close to together. When you left click on an object you want to modify, then right click to get the drop down menu, it some times jumps to another object. Lines are extremely difficult move and make longer and shorter with the mouse. The little arrow icon sometimes sits right on the end of line you are moving so cannot see where you are putting it. It require a lot of trial and error. You can not use the transparency too on texture fill. You are very limited on how small you can make shapes as the control points used at the corners or objects are too large.

This is a program that is a hassle to use but with a lot of fooling around, you can end up with some pretty nice drawings, other than you cannot see your dimensions when you print them. For the money, it is a pretty good deal. With some work and if they start listening to their users, they could have a really great program. But for now if you are doing any sort of serious design work, the hassles out weight the fact that it is inexpensive, if you time is worth anything.

Their support is good, they get back to you right away, but usually to tell you that is just the way program works.
