Version: SmartDraw 2009 52
"Useless for technical drawing"
Pros: Simple interface; easy to construct diagrams quickly; easy to resize objects and alter drawings
Cons: Millimetre dimensions are not storeed accurately; zoom function makes it difficult to view long, thin objects
Summary: I wanted to use Smartdraw to design some acoustic enclosures I'm making. I'm using pieces of MDF which are around 9mm x 800mm in size. I can't use Smartdraw to model these: either the object dimensions are continually corrupted due to rounding errors (9mm quickly becomes a random value like 14.1mm) or, to store them accurately, it's necessary to use a scale setting that makes it impossible to zoom out far enough to view the object in its entirety. You can either size your object accurately, or view it, but not both. I contacted technical support to find out that this is a known issue, particularly when using millimetres, and that there's no workaround. I'm amazed that the product made it to release with such a fundamental flaw. My impression is that Smartdraw is poorly designed and tested, and not cut out for technical drawing, though it would like to pass itself off otherwise. Don't waste your time!
