"A nice change from Facetime."

October 16, 2014  |  By dennish755

 |  Version: Skype 7.0.653

Pros

Its fun to explore the possibilities. Used FT for a long while. Don't get me wrong, its no FT replacement but more like a temporary indulgence.

Cons

Errors show up now and then.

"When does it work?"

June 06, 2014  |  By just_stuff

 |  Version: Skype 6.15.59.330

Pros

It used to work great.

Cons

No longer makes calls... " internal error."

Summary

I can't go back to early versions, but would if it would make the program work. I rarely use it, my cell phone is great when there is coverage, and there is less coverage with wifi. I was able to receive a call-lasted over 1.5 hours, but then dropped and never could get it back. Waiting for fixes that work. Recommendation: find something else until this works.

"UI is horrible"

April 03, 2014  |  By vmcore

 |  Version: Skype 6.15.59.330

Pros

Can not think of any

Cons

Typical Microsoft pile of junk. What use to be great, now is junk. UI is by far worst item, it is only reason I am still using 2.8 version.

"It seems it has hit rock bottom"

November 04, 2013  |  By jandsm5321

 |  Version: Skype 6.9.59.701

Pros

Video chat... mostly free...

Cons

Couldn't get the video to work at all.

Summary

It seems Microsoft is more worried about adding features to make themselves more money off the program than actually keeping the program running.

"Current version is 6.7.59.373, NOT 6.7.0.373"

August 17, 2013  |  By zunipus

 |  Version: Skype 6.7.0.373

Pros

Chatting! It still works reasonable well if you don't give a rat's about your privacy rights.

Cons

Surveillance by Microsoft! Handed off illegally to the US feds! Let's destroy the US Constitution! Let's screw the 4th Amendment! Let's be treasonous criminals! Yay for the NSA and servile Microsoft! IASSOTS.

Summary

The current version is 6.7.59.373. If that is NOT what you get from this download, then head over the the Skype page for the actual current version.

Skype used to be kewl. Then Microsoft bought it. Then Skype got infested with ads. Then Microsoft added user surveillance. Then Microsoft handed off the surveillance data to the US NSA (National 'Security' Agency) as part of their blanket, illegal surveillance of US citizens on US soil with out 'probable cause' of any crime whatsoever because the FISA courts have been compromised and made complicit in the unconstitutional crimes of the Obama administration who over-reached the authority provided to them by the abominable, idiotically named 'Patriot' Act perpetrated by the W. Bush Administration, and the NSA doesn't want to stop there as demonstrated by their massive data center being built in Utah. And so falls the USA, blahblahblah.

IOW: If you want to maintain your US rights of privacy as a US citizen, Skype is NOT the chat tool for you.

Instead, go check out:
Cryptocat
&
Jabber
which offer real, actual, 'unbreakable' encryption that keeps the criminal government out of your life, hurray.

But if you don't give a rat's about your privacy rights, Skype still works reasonably well. Thus I give it 2 stars versus just 1.
