Just in time for Windows 8, Skype has now just released a major version update that adds improved integration with Microsoft and Facebook accounts, better messaging, and some minor changes to the user interface.

For those of you who've been living under a rock, Skype is one of the the most popular video chat and voice calling clients amongst our users as well as the world. It offers free calls to other Skype users over the Internet as well as very affordable rates for calling landlines and phones.

Version 6 brings a much simpler registration process, particularly with more integration with Facebook and Microsoft accounts. Now you can sign in with either Facebook or Hotmail and automatically use that as a Skype log-in. The previous version briefly incorporated Facebook features; its synchronization is much more apparent in the latest release. User contacts seemed to sync with profile pictures from more sources and the overall interface also looked cleaner. It wasn't a drastic overhaul, but subtle things like removing mini-banner ads from the bottom of the contact list and thin outlines over the tabs did contribute to a more modern look.

Call quality is still variable, depending on your connection and setup, but our experiences have been very positive. This version seemed more focused on casting a wider net and reducing the barrier to entry to an already excellent service and easing registration woes as new platforms emerge. If you've yet to try out Skype and you're looking for a worthy VoIP client, look no further and click on the green download button.

"Best communication tool for living abroad"

March 19, 2013  |  By Sam06022

 |  Version: Skype 6.2.0.106

Pros

-Easy to video connect with people in any part of the world
-Free for the basic service
-Instant Messaging system
-Year subscription to be able to call landlines has been a godsend for communicating with my less than tech-savy family members back in the states, and let's them call me and leave voicemails.

Cons

No customer service to be reached. I want to change my number as a woman keeps giving it out to solicitors and credit companies, and it gets on my nerves.

"It has become a lot worse sin Microsoft got hold of it"

March 03, 2013  |  By rio_rick

 |  Version: Skype 6.2.0.106

Pros

Can be used to talk with others who use Skype. The video facility is quite niec.

Cons

It uses a lot of resources and has a habit of upgrading itself without giving you the choice whether it should or not. Some of the updates have been dreadful.

Summary

Use it sparingly. It is important to set the options carefully so that you are in charge of how it works otherwise it takes over a huge chunk of your resources.q

"NO CUSTOMER SUPPORT NUMBER"

February 24, 2013  |  By Gus1985

 |  Version: Skype 6.2.0.106

Pros

THEY TAKE YOUR MONEY AND KEEP IT without giving you any service, then they say that they can not refund your money because it has being used ( used by Skype).. do not loose money with skype they have no customer service number ! no customer service AT ALL !

Cons

- they have no customer service number
- their website has no customer service help
- they stole my money and did not refunded they say they could not refund because they took it there fore it was no longer not used.
-You might be the next one robbed

Summary

find a company that has a customer service number you can call.
find a company that has some sort of customer service at least

do not go with skype there is a bunch of companies cheaper out there for international call. only use it for the free features if you have too. if they ever see any of your money they will take it, keep it, and never refund it to you.

"Forget it and stick with Aim Messenger."

February 16, 2013  |  By andreaborman

 |  Version: Skype 6.2.0.106

Pros

May be all right for big laptops but does not work well on netbooks. I don't think it was ever made for netbooks.

Cons

Not very user friendly and Skype charges for a lot of video calls which puts you off from the start.

Summary

Well I have read that Microsoft are getting rid of Windows Live Messenger on 15th March 2013 and replacing it with Skype which they bought last year.

They say we can merge our MSN or Windows Live account and sign into Skype with that, thanks but no thanks.

Skype does not work on my netbooks, although it did seem to work better on Linux Mint than what it did on Windows.I stil did not like it and anyway I use Windows now all the time. And even if I didn't, I still would not upgrade to Skype.

According to what I read we won't even be able to use our MSN or Windows Live account with aMSN or Emesene, the MSN messenger clones, because it will stop working with those after 15th March. And we won't be able to sign in Pidgin using our MSN account either after that date. Only Skype will work with MSN/Windows Live Messenger ID.

As for me- well I avoided upgrading to Windows Live Messenger 2011 and 2012 version on my Windows 7,I have stayed with WLM 2009.Which will now no longer work after 15th. But still,I am not installing Skype,NO WAY.
I will just use Aim Messenger the old version 7.5 which I have on my computer which is the most user friendly messenger, along with Google Talk. Just tell your Windows Live contacts to open an account with AOL Mail, then they can use Aim Mesenger.
Problem solved.

What's the big deal about Skype anyway? It's overrated.
