SketchUp gives you the tools to create all kinds of 3D images and designs, from woodworking blueprints to urban planning designs. With multiple template options and an intuitive interface, this program lets you direct all of your energy into creating and not into fumbling through complicated menu options.

Pros

Template variety: No matter what kind of design you're looking to create, you'll likely find just the right template in this program. There are options for Construction Documentation, Landscape Architecture, Interior and Production Design, 3D Printing, and more. Additionally, each type of template lets you choose the system of measurement you'd like to use and on what scale.

Help options: This program can do a lot, and there are a lot of different resources in place to help you access all of its features. Depending on your experience level and the way you like to learn, you can make use of Video Tutorials, Self-paced Tutorials, a Getting Started Guide, Quick Reference Cards, or other Help options.

Cons

Time to learn: Because there is so much to learn, though, it can take some time to get the hang of using this program effectively. Beginners to design programs will likely take longer than users who already have some experience working with similar software; but few people will be able to jump right in and get results immediately.

Bottom Line

SketchUp is a smooth and efficient free program that provides a lot of functionality to facilitate all kinds of designing. Its plentiful Help resources make it accessible to even the most inexperienced users, but it does take some time to get the hang of all of the features the program provides.

"Not as functional as it should be"

November 29, 2014  |  By tsdrums

 |  Version: SketchUp 15.1.105

Pros

- Low cost for 3D modeling software
- Easy to learn

Cons

- Crashes too often
- Limited functionality (can't fillet or chamfer)
- Not intuitive enough for experienced draftsmen

Summary

This program might seem great for beginners, but anyone with prior 3D modeling experience will feel annoyed with its limited capabilities. There is no way to directly fillet or chamfer an edge and it crashes often. This program seems to fit the hobbyist's needs rather than the professional's or student's needs as there are far superior programs available. Autodesk software like AutoCAD, Inventor, Maya, and Fusion 360 are all far superior (professionals usually have access through employers since the licences are expensive and students can get free educational licences). Sketchup is under-developed and inadequate for detailed work.

"Ambition: Aim low, you'll never miss!"

November 11, 2014  |  By michael_toronto

 |  Version: SketchUp 15.0.9351

Pros

Easy to draw a box, easy to dimension.

Cons

Impossible to change dimensions, or set the scale of the drawing. Not intuitive at all past drawing a box, massive collapse in usability in what should be a basic function of any CAD system. I have no idea how anyone could possibly provide a positive rating for this program.

Summary

Impossible to use for any engineer who cares about accuracy - simplest functions missing or not intuitive at all.

"Good for Kids... It's a modern generation "paint""

September 11, 2014  |  By Daniel_PV

 |  Version: Google SketchUp 7.0.8660

Pros

Easy to use, can be fun to use in the first hours.

Cons

Not intended for professional use.

Plugin Skelion is terrible... very slow, freezing all the time...also the doesnt interact with other apps like Pvsyst like they say in the website...

Terrible!

Summary

Its nice and easy to try... could be fun for kids or people trying to design something with less effort.

for professionals its near zero... too much bugs, innacurate, slow (even with super cpu).

"No OBJ Support"

June 21, 2014  |  By KingMango

 |  Version: SketchUp 14.1.1282

Pros

Don't know. I need OBJ support so I haven't used it

Cons

No OBJ import

Summary

I wanted to use this program as a go-between for Maya and NifSkope. NifSkeope prefers to import 3ds rather than OBJ format. I model in Maya. Nifskope can import OBJ or 3ds to replace mesh data. I saw that sketchup handled 3ds format and installed it just assuming that I could export an OBJ from Maya, import it to Sketchup and then export a 3ds. I'm giving a two star review because I think it is a mistake for them to overlook what is still a very relevant (if admittedly very dated and limited) file format.

"Greatly improved over earlier versions."

April 13, 2013  |  By jayriffe

 |  Version: SketchUp 8.0.16846

Pros

A user friendly arrangement of tools.

Cons

In giving the user an understanding of the basics, I would prefer to
see a straight to the point use of numbered steps in teaching the basics. Have on the screen immediately the best possible steps to
arrive at the shortest training cycle of basics.

"Diffibult to Accurately Control the Cursor"

March 19, 2013  |  By Kurt Sanger

 |  Version: SketchUp 8.0.4811

Pros

Its a free application.

Cons

Difficult to punch windows through double sided walls. Difficult to align objects into your design. Have not found the mating options yet for an assembly. Have not been able to walk inside the room I was designing. Really hard to position the view inside the room to look around. Appears to be optimized for viewing from outside.

Summary

OK for a quick sketch. But trying to do something accurately is difficult with this app.

"Great App for any designer/artist/hobbyist"

February 06, 2013  |  By dotgovhater

 |  Version: SketchUp 8.0.4811

Pros

1...Has a Free version
2...Fast to create a project (once you are proficient)
3...Easy once you take the time to learn all the fundamental tools and concepts.
4...Has a huge library of free 3d assets from other users.
5...Great for art and design.
6...Plenty of tutorials out there if you look properly.

Cons

1...Pro version is expensive. It would be better if Trimble would use a subscription business model.
2...Can be difficult if you're new to Sketchup (persevere. you'll be amazed at what you can make. Coplanar problems gave me problems at first.
3...DO NOT click and drag with Sketchup. It uses a toggle for mouse clicks. much easier when you understand.
4...Snap-to can be annoying. Just zoom in closer to object.

Summary

I watched a few videos on Youtube and managed to create a very complex house design from a floor plan using free Sketchup.
(a useful source of information was "safari books online").

"very weak, bug-ridden program"

February 06, 2013  |  By ddss1977

 |  Version: SketchUp 8.0.4811

Pros

easy to get started

Cons

once you start to develop your model, the extreme limitations of this program became overwhelmingly apparent.

Summary

If you are creating anything more complex than a box, don't even try to do it with this feeble program

"Decent Program - Terrible Customer Support!"

December 19, 2012  |  By KVanWye

 |  Version: SketchUp 8.0.4811

Pros

We have the PRO version and use it for basic site plans; import .dwg files; measurements and mapping. As confidence increases will use it to build full 3D models of playground equipment with animation. Takes time but there is enough online to help you get started.

Cons

What they don't do is provide any kind of reasonable customer support. You pay $500 for the PRO version and the only customer support is through forums and antiquated email forms that don't allow you to reply. No Online Chat, No customer support number. They want you to buy it and go away because they are evidently to busy to service what they sell.
