Version: Sins of a Solar Empire demo

"Like the Homeworld series, only better"

by bdbranch on June 3, 2008

Pros: It was originally going to be called Imperium Galactica 3, but that would have been a major mistake. SSE is unrecognisable from the IG series. Gameplay is more like the Homeworld series, only better. Very - very basic development system (although it's possible to make major mistakes), this is essentially a space combat game. Easy to start playing. And if you're starting to win halfway through the game, you can increase the difficulty level. I almost forgot that playgame is very balanced.

Cons: Play this on the net??? I don't think so. I could think of few things worse then playing this game online. It's a long-winded game at the best of times (at least on single player you can save), on the net it would be last person awake (or alive) wins. And I doubt that you'll ever actually finish a game. Even after it's clear that you're going to win, it takes too long to mop up the enemy. It's poor endgameplay does detract. Did I mention that it was a long tiring game to play that gets boring?

Nice to play, but a new proper IG could have been much better. 3.5 stars here.

Pros: Vast expanse of space for the battlefield, makes the average RTS map look like cheese. Runs amazingly well on low end systems even when the graphics are at a respectable level. Smooth gameplay, pleasant music and nice effects.

Cons: Explosions aren't always the best close up, but look fine from afar.

Summary: I came across Sins in Gamestation whilst inquiring about Xbox 360 repairs. That prompted me to get the demo and I have to say Sins is very surprising. To run game fine you generally need a good PC with more than one core (in my opinion) and a good se... read more
