"Poor product, do not use"
Version: SimpleOCR 3.1
Pros
UI is reasonably self explanatory.
Cons
Product fails to learn on any real level. Machine printed text is very badly parsed. While consistently incorrect, program should be able to learn from corrections. Instead it repeats errors over and over.
Summary
Having a dataset of 8 images, all produced with the same application, all machine printed, I should be able to teach the application to have minimal or at least some reduction in errors. However, use after (up to 4 files) the application behaved abysmally. I would recommend people who are interested in a free OCR application look elsewhere rather than waste there time on a product that consistently fails to provide helpful results. Manual transcription would in fact be faster.

"Its a little tricky"
Version: SimpleOCR 3.1
Pros
This program has potential. You might not get it on the first try but if you change the settings of the image file, you can decrease errors. For instance: I found that for a PDF if I make the view size 125% then took a snapshot of the text required, paste that into MS paint and under attributes select black and white before saving the bmp, I get about 10% OCR error.

"You get what you pay for"
Version: SimpleOCR 3.1
Pros
Considering the price - free - it's not a bad OCR program. It makes a lot of mistakes, but allows you to fix them as you review the text. Unfortunately, that makes text scanning a time-consuming operation. On the other hand, given the price of a high-quality OCR program (I've found Scan2Text to be excellent), it's better than nothing.

"The one and only I could find, which actually converted."
Version: SimpleOCR 3.1
Pros
It was easy and simple to use, and the only program I could find which actually worked!

"It works well if you pre-scan your document as a JPG or TIF file."
Version: SimpleOCR 3.1
Pros
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium and have no problems using this software. To get the software to work, you need to pre-scan your text document at 300dpi. If your text background is shaded, the OCR will not work properly. In this case, you will have to tweak your scanner's brightness and contrast settings to remove the background. Once this is done, the accuracy rate will be very high.
Not bad at all for a free program.
Cons
The software doesn't recognise formatting so all formats will be lost.
