"Excellent, Very Musical Tool"

December 03, 2006  |  By kevin.olson

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
SimpleChord is one of my favorite apps. It allows me to learn chords, apply them to progressions, move them around within progressions, and export them out to GarageBand for further use. The developer is great and is working on even more improvements to an already terrific Mac app. Try it!

"Great \"sketch tool\" for composers"

June 21, 2006  |  By ed.perry

 |  Version: SimpleChord 3.3.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have used SimpleChord for a year now and find it to be really valuable as a sketch tool to rough out ideas to be fully developed later in Logic Pro. First, it's rock solid; it's never crashed on me. With low machine overhead, it runs on my fairly old portable, so i can work anywhere. The user interface is simple letting me get a lot of work done quickly on developing chord progressions. I can play with some ideas, get a good idea of what I want, then go to Logic Pro to flesh out the songs.

"A nice, inexpensive utility. Wish list:-"

Wish there were more octaves. And wish the dang Tempo Finder/Metronome floating above everything including finder windows could be made optional. And wish the time delay in arpeggio could be made variable. In fact, playback mode is somehting that does not really belong in options, it should be a manistream pull-down or radio button. A one-trick pony but useful and reasonably-priced.

"Getting better but....."

August 24, 2005  |  By lucytune

 |  Version: SimpleChord 3.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
The first chord I happened to look at was F#/Gb Aug.
It told me that the notes were F# - A- D.
That's D major in my book.
So I looked at the reverse which told me that those notes make F#Aug and D Major.

This one is very obvious. I won't start again on about the difference between sharps and flats - you get my drift.
Back to the music theory books kids;-)

"Good, & getting better......."

Summary

Naming & spelling aren't important to me....as long as I know what keys to hit. These recent updates have really expanded the list of chords. It now almost has the same amount as its only(?) rival: Ebony & Ivory. I do find Ebony & Ivory's GUI a bit fussy & slow compared to SimpleChord's.

"A worthy effort, but..."

I need to say that augmented chords are spelled incorrectly. An A augmented chord is spelled A, C#, E#, not A , C# , F. I agree that a little more attention to detail is necessary for this to work for fledgling musicians. After all, we are shooting for 1.000 batting avaerage as musicians. If we had a .350 batting average, it'd be GREAT for a baseball player, but crummy for a performing musician.

"Very good tool for musicians and guitarists"

Very good tool for identifying the right chords of a song that you wanna play on guitar. I used it to find the chords of "Me and My Monkey" (Robbie Williams) while the original track was playing in the background (result: Cm Fm6 Bb6 Abmj7).

Showing the chords on a piano keyboard is already very helpful. It would even be perfect having the option to show the chords as a guitar tab.

"Nice, but..."

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Well...I like the idea of this app, but I would look for some things in the future. Most notably(no pun intended), inversions and voicing options. I also was put off (I think I'm just a picky, irritating kind of person) by the fact that all chords were displayed using sharps. I think a flat should be a flat and a sharp a sharp.

I'll keep my eye on this as it grows. Thank you for your time and efforts. Please don't let my comments diminish my appreciation of your hard work.
