"Support is a joke, worst I've seen"
Version: Serv-U 11.0.0.4
Pros
Decent UI, user management.
Cons
Support does not go through any troubleshooting procedures, they only send you what they assume is the solution but never bother to actually read the customer's problem or verify their issue. And don't even try to call them, they want you to pay just to explain to them what the issue is. Worst support of any company I've dealt with and we bought their "GOLD" support. Absolutely terrible!
Summary
If you depend on 3rd party support don't deal with them, what's the point if you end up doing all the work yourself, might as well go opensource and roll your own. see email chain (edited to protect identity of all parties) To: service@rhinosoft.com
Subject: RNTO command requires write access to parent folder
Hi Thomas, that doesn't help me for my problem and also still doesn't address the issue I pointed out from the earlier email that if you rename a folder, it will stop allowing the user to read/write to the folder since the permission is granted base on folder name prior to the user changing it. Let me paste the original email here again:
Description:
We are trying to setup access control so the users may only make changes to subfolder but not on the root folder or the subfolder itself (i.e. we don't want them to delete, rename the sub folders).
Our ACL setup as below:
\VirtualRoot : RL
\VirtualRoot\F1 : Full, inherit to child
\VirtualRoot\Upload : Full, inherit to child
We can add, rename, delete without issue in \VirtualRoot\F1 and \Virtual\Upload but when we try to move a file between the 2 folders we get permission denied on the RNTO command in the log file. It seems that we need Write permission on the \VirtualRoot folder to be able to successfully "move" the file even though we have full permission in the 2 sub folders. Please let me know if there is a configuration that is need to allow the users to "move" a file without giving full access to the root folder. Thanks.
The reason RNTO is not working as designed is because it requires me to grant WRITE permission to the parent folder in order to MOVE a file from 1 sub directory to another, and the culprit seems to be the RNTO command base on the log file.
I know you said you understood the issue but the solutions you have provided does not align to it, I don't know why this is so difficult to explain when we've provided you with config files and examples and tried to contact you via phone to explain the issue which you have refused to discuss without premium support.
I think by providing the technical analysis beforehand is confusing your team, so let's try rephrasing instead:
• I need to give user access to write, read, move, delete, rename directories and files between 2 sub folders (\TF_QA1\Upload and \TF_QA1\F1) but keep the parent folder (\TF_QA1)structure constant, so they should not be able to move or rename the 2 sub folders (\TF_QA1\Upload and \ TF_QA1\F1) nor should they write/delete files on the parent folder.
• I'm able to configure the setup but it will not allow me to MOVE files from \TF_QA1\Upload to \TF_QA1\F1 unless I also grant write permission to \TF_QA1
• We need to have the ability to MOVE since downloading files then re-uploading it manually is NOT an acceptable workaround for the MOVE operation.
• Could you find me a way so I can accomplish point 1 and not allow users to put files on the parent folder?
At this point besides a solution I also wish to escalate this to customer service and your supervising manager, please forward this email chain to the appropriate parties.
Regards,
IT_Cheng

Hi IT_Cheng,
I don't believe I follow completely. In your case, you need to be able to have full access to both the "Upload" and the "F1" directories, and be able to move files between them. With the solution I provided, with the Directory Access rule structure I provided, users can Upload, Download, Delete, Rename, and Move files between the two directories. In addition, with the rules I provided, the users cannot Rename, Move, or Delete the "Upload" and "F1" directories because the rules for F:\ftp\_Disabled\TF_QA1\Upload and F:\ftp\_Disabled\TF_QA1\F1 explicitly have "Remove" permissions disabled. In the Directory Access rules configuration I provided, Write access is not provided to F:\ftp\_Disabled\TF_QA1\. In the Directory Access layout I sent, downloading and re-uploading files is not necessary, as moving is supported.
As I am the head of customer support and sales, you are already speaking to customer service. I report directly to the president of the company, Mark Peterson, and I will forward your concerns to him.

Hi Thomas, the only explanation is that there is a discrepancy between your setup and mine because I am not able to move a file between the sub folders and I can still rename the sub folders base on these rules:
D:\Upload\* - Full Access D:\Upload - Full Access, Minus "Remove" Directory
D:\private\* - Full Access D:\private - Full Access, Minus "Remove" Directory D:\TF_QA1\ - List Only (+ the change to have RENAME enabled base on your response: it's actually necessary to have the "Rename" permission on the parent directory as well as the contents of the directory)
Do you have a working setup that you can show me?

Hi IT_Cheng,
If you also do not want to be able to rename the folders, you must remove the "Rename" privileges from the \Upload and \private rules.

Thomas then we are back to square one aren't we, these are all your recommendations that doesn't work for me. You need to listen to me on my problem rather than making assumptions and dismissing evidence, if the same config works on your end (which I haven't seen) and not for me (which I'll be happy to show you), you need to tell me why, that's support. What does it take to get help from your guys? Post this email chain on all the major technical forums around the world so people can see how ridiculous this issue has become??? This after your team's Mark Mayo has "REPRODUCED" the issue!
I am very disappointed with your company's GOLD support, I have no idea why we pay for support that completely misses the problem.
We will be looking for a replacement FTP server. Please also forward this to your president Mark Peterson, I would love to hear from him.

Hi IT_Cheng,
I'm sorry you're having trouble. Attached is the configuration of your server set up using the directions I provided previously, wwith the username/password of the test account changed to test/test, and the root changed to D:\ as I do not have an F:\ volume. You'll find both that files can be moved between private, and upload as expected, those folders cannot be renamed or deleted as expected, etc.

[attached file shows he gave full permission on the root folder]
Are you not providing full access to the root then?

... All this and he provided me with my original setup that doesn't work and I clearly said that "We are trying to setup access control so the users may only make changes to subfolder but not on the root folder or the subfolder itself" -

"Version 7 nothing like Version 7"
Version: Serv-U 7.3.0.2
Pros
None found
Cons
The completely redesigned interface is nothing like that of any other program and is just a mess.
Summary
The functionality of the new interface is limited. Find v6 if you can.

"Avoid for commercial use"
Version: Serv-U 7.3.0.2
Pros
Easey User Interface - in version 6.
Cons
Serious problems in transmitting files, especially over distance.
Version 7 userinterface is very slow, and have lost the simple operation over version 6, and is now rather clumpsey..Summary
This is a review of the Serv-U Server V6 and 7.
After using version 6 of Serv-U during 12 months, the result is clear. As long as the internet connection is perfect, and the server and client are close, it works fine. But the moment the client is in another country, or the internet connection is not 100% tip top, it may take minutes to download even small files. Between continents the file transfers simply are not possible. This with one download in progress, we have also tested with 2-3 simultanoius connections, which may be acceptable for non-commercial use. Upgrading to version 7 dosnt help much. Further, even on a Windows 2003 server, the new version 7 adm interface is very slow, and the user interface is clumpsey. We have now installed the FileZilla Server, and all problems are gone, plus the FileZilla has a more simple user. -
"v7 is Completely Unusable"
Version: Serv-U 7.2.0.1
Pros
None that I found
Cons
Admin Interface is a complete mess.
Summary
We are a long time corporate user of Serv U who had purchased many licenses of their previous versions which were all EXCELLENT. We upgraded to the v7 of the product to get some benefits noted in the feature release. We bought the corporate license given that it was a live environment situation only to find the entire admin interface had been changed to an un-workable mess. I can't stress how bad it functioned and how unintuitive it was to use. The previous versions were light years better than the new version (which is no longer available anywhere). No refund policy as well. We uninstalled and reverted back to the previous version once we found the installer app on one of our servers.

"The Personal edition is most certainly free!"
Version: Serv-U 7.2.0.1
Pros
I found it stated in multiple places on their website that the personal edition is free. After the 30 day FREE trial it reverts to the FREE personal edition.

"NOTHING FREE ABOUT THIS!!"
Version: Serv-U 7.2.0.1
Pros
It is half-way decent software.. too bad they are liars. I do not do business with companies that like to lie and decieve people.
Cons
It is a pretty sorry company to advertise something as free; but it is not free (unless you download it from a file sharing program :), which is what you should do when companies LIE to you about it, and decieve you into downloading it.
