Version: Secunia Personal Software Inspector 1.0.0.3
"Essential, easy to use security tool."
Pros: Thorough, fast, and assists in downloading and installing the updates.
Cons: No cons that I have found.
Summary: Well, my Secunia Software Inspector notified me of an update to its software. Secunia is a service that checks most software versions and alerts you if you have unpatched vulnerabilities, out-of-date applications, or other vulnerabilities. What makes it even more useful is that it assists you in obtaining updates, uninstalling obsolete items, and re-testing.
Belarc Advisor is also very useful. It reveals software versions, and MS hot fixes, as well as hardware versions, and some testing of hardware. But, Secunia is more useful in discerning security vulnerabilities in software, and upgrading. So, each has its place.
Secunia is available as an on-line scan, and you can sign-up for periodic alerts of software updates. A more comprehensive service is provided by installing a small Secunia application, which tests a wider range of software, and can do real-time monitoring of your system, if you desire. And there is a Corporate Edition, for commercial purposes. The two personal versions are at no charge.
Secunia is one of my favorite applications. It has found important vulnerabilities, including plug-ins that did not uninstall during upgrades, leaving a hidden vulnerability. Five stars out of five.
