"Avoid at all costs."
Version: Screen OCR 7.9
Pros
None to speak of.
Cons
I wanted to capture text from my forum without getting all the code that occurs when I copy it. This seemed to fit the requirement. I figured version 9.1 might have fixed some of the problems already mentioned. Big mistake.
Wouldn't run.
Tried to contact customer service - no reply.
Now it won't uninstall!Summary
So annoying, words fail me.

"Read text and formatting flawlessly from screen"
Version: Screen OCR 7.9
Pros
Simple selection tool does not require and file to be created and opened. Recognises layout columns and converts to plain text. Recognises slashes in dates.
Cons
Appends pointless help tips to all your pasted text while the software is running. (I assume these disappear when registered)
Summary
March 7th 2011. I'm using this to read text from some older business software and SAP logistics pages (both of which have sections of text that cannot be copied from, only viewed on screen) I need to transfer the info into a messaging system that only accepts plain text. The software has to deal with grey backgounds, different coloured text and dates/numbers in several formats.
Having tested other OCR programs, all had real problems with the formatting and most lost the columns, with screen OCR I find the text layout almost identical to the screen image and totally legible and it seems to ignore the background.
Highly recommended. -
"Doesn't work - Doesn't Uninstall"
Version: Screen OCR 7.9
Pros
21day trial period is 20 days longer than you need to realize this product doesn't work
Cons
Didn't work on even things I could just copy and paste like a MS Word document, couldn't uninstall
Summary
I'll be glad when Microsoft bundles some sort of free OCR tool with an OS and I won't have to deal with software like this.

"Did exactly what I needed"
Version: Screen OCR 7.1
Pros
- Accurately copies numbers from a picture
- Easy to useCons
- May not do what YOU need, based on other reviews here
Summary
I just needed a way to copy a number from a program that displays a measurement value as an image. I don't have any evidence to refute all the negative reviews here, but this program does what I needed perfectly. I will be registering a copy.

"didn't work"
Version: Screen OCR 7.1
Pros
quick download
Cons
didn't work at all for the scanned document i was trying to copy.
-
"Works for what I needed"
Version: Screen OCR 7.1
Pros
This works really well on plain text. Select from window seemed to work best.
Cons
Doesn't work on everything.
-
"Misleading Name"
Version: Screen OCR 2.8
Pros
None. Nothing.
Cons
It can't read PDFs.
Summary
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) implies that the tools takes whatever is on the screen, a bit-map image for example, and intelligibly interprets the characters as true OCR software would do.
-
"It would be nice IF IT ACTUALLY WORKS !!!"
Version: Screen OCR 2.8
Pros
There are NO positives here. Crude grammar errors, like in the menu "NO THIS MENU", which most likely should be "noT this menu"
Cons
Does not work!!!
Summary
Could have more visual explanation. One has to guess what the help says. Being a programmer I can find out what the helps may imply. However, IT DOES NOT WROK. Produces jumbled text. NOT a real OCR.

"Don't recognise anything"
Version: Screen OCR 2.8
Cons
This program doesn't work at all. I made a try scanning from real text, from the program's Help System, and all I got was characters like this:
:. . - tu - t o -.:`. . :: -.รบ-:. .: - , -. , :, :: . , - `i` - |`i: : :::' -i-: ::D -,i:: : :: : ::D
