"Great, so here are some replies"
Version: San Andreas Multiplayer 0.2.2
Pros
Reply not working... :
It has over 7,000 servers worldwide and 30,000+ players... surely you made a mistake!
Version 1
You must have Version 1 of San Andreas for this to work. If you have version 2 just download a no-disc hacked .exe or a version patcher. I recommend a no-disc v.1 exe from megagames. I am sure it is against policy to post a direct link but just google this:

Clean install
You must have a clean install, except for the v.1 no-disc/patched .exe.
Clean Download
Make sure the downloaded file is not corrupt. Try downloading it from sa-mp.com(mirrors) if this is the case. You should get an executable installer called sa-mp-0.2.2-R2.exe (3,721kb/3.63MB.) Double click it and install in a copy of your clean install. Always mod on a backup copy of a clean install to ensure success. This means you should copy the clean/original GTA San Andreas game folder and rename it or add an extension like _modded. Then install sa-mp there. Modding on copies of the game folder is good for novice users and generally you should always use copied folders for major modifications. Incidentally, given the nature of the way SA-MP and MTA utilize SA you can have them both installed in the same folder without conflicts (not tested on current versions.)
I have been playing for 1 1/2 years now so I know it works! I had to get an account just to help because it has brought so much joy! :)
About crashes.... SA-MP has always had crashes, but I would be objective about whether it is SA-MP or the server. Servers with heavy traffic or multiple and possibly corrupt scripts tend to crash frequently. Pick servers with only 3/4 player capacity, good ping (i.e. low-ping like 80(good) versus 230(bad), and standard server (fewer/more-stable scripts.) Basically, trial and error!
Cons
This con is not fair really. SA-MP is great and the team does a great job sticking to the core idea. That being said, a constant muttering amongst players is where are the PEDs? Instead of regurgitating their explanation verbatim, basically it doesn't have PEDs or regular game features because of the way it works. It is run clientside and doesn't modify any of the actual game files. Fine, we understand it, but the dream of having a fully realized GTA multiplayer is still unaccomplished. The fact is that this could be done, but doing so requires bots which are considered mods and therefore 'illegal' in SA-MP. Unless someone in the team realizes that 'impossible' is just a word, and the same old explanations are irrelevant when it comes to LAN and private servers, we will just have to wait until GTAIV.
sigh... but still playing SA-MP!
