Chances are, right now you have something on your computer that you would rather other people not see. Financial information, a diary, photographic evidence of a night of debauchery--you know what we're talking about. Fortunately for you, SafeHouse Explorer USB Flash Drive Encryption makes it easy to keep your private stuff private, on a flash drive or on your computer.

In our adventures as software reviewers, we see a lot of amateurish software, so it was a breath of fresh air when we opened SafeHouse Explorer and found a well-designed and well-explained program. The application walks first-time users through the process of creating a secure volume, setting a password, and moving sensitive files there. The program looks very much like Windows Explorer, and using it is much like moving files in and out of a regular folder; the main difference is that the files are protected by passwords and, more importantly, 256-bit encryption. Users can create as many SafeHouse Explorer volumes as they like of whatever size they like, and we especially like that volumes can be created on any drive--including USB flash drives--without a separate installation of the software. SafeHouse Explorer's online Help file is well-written and thorough, and the publisher also provides an informative video tutorial. We were impressed with both the looks and functions of SafeHouse Explorer, and we highly recommend it.

SafeHouse Explorer USB Flash Drive Encryption is free. The program installs politely but leaves a folder and desktop icon behind upon removal. We recommend this program to all users.

"Some serious flaws in this product"

July 01, 2010  |  By Oliv55

 |  Version: SafeHouse Explorer USB Flash Drive Encryption 3.0

Pros

Installs and runs from a USB using just the executable, and the vault you create to store your files. Interface is simple and easy to use, unlike a lot of others who overcomplicate theirs.

Cons

Two serious flaws. The first is that it installs registry keys on the PC you plug it into, and secondly it may leave copies of your personal files on the PC you use it on.

Summary

I liked the product as it was simple to use. Unfortunately, I discovered that it adds registry settings to each PC you plug the USB into and run app on. Some firms may regard this as unauthorised installation of software, and you could find yourselve in trouble. The fact the software does not warn you or make any attempt to delete these settings is poor design.

Even more serious, when you plug your USB into a PC, you are given the option to install performance inhancements on that PC, which again could get you into trouble. If you chose to ignore this, the software will copy each file you work on into a Temp folder (and delete it once you have finished). However, when I removed my USB and then looked in the Temp folder, a number of my private documents were still there! This is like leaving your personal files lying around.

In summary, use this on your own machines and you are fine. Use it on a work or public machine, and you can be in trouble.

"Yes, it's free but you could lose all your data!"

April 30, 2010  |  By AppUser

 |  Version: SafeHouse Explorer USB Flash Drive Encryption 3.0

Pros

Intuitive and user friendly interface.

Cons

Lost all my files: was moving all the folders from the "safe house" into another folder on the computer. I clicked cancel and all my folders disappeared. The Safe House app thought all the items had been moved and removed all reference to them. Gone!

Summary

Please be very careful when using this software, some parts work well, though the one which should keep things safe...well, that doesn't. Maybe the Pro version is more reliable - I'm not willing to find out...

 |  Version: SafeHouse Explorer USB Flash Drive Encryption 3.0

Pros

Ease of use
256 bit twofish encryption and use upto a 255 character long password
volume sizes upto 2000 gb (2TB)
LOADED with features.

Awesome for a free aplication.

Cons

You cannot re size volumes in the free version (safehouse explorer)

Summary

It is brilliant.

You can copy the files to a flash drive and run the app with no admin rights.
Make a self extractable disk partition
Huge password lenghts
Lovly interface
nearly perfect, you just cannot resize volumes in safehouse explorer, this is the reason why i gave it 4 stars not 5.
It get's very anoying when you want to make a volume smaller or larger because you have to cut the safehouse volume on to your desktop then make another one on your flash drive which is the desired size, then open up bath and copy the files into the new volume.

I highly recomend you download safehouse explorer.

it is a must!

"User friendly"

September 15, 2009  |  By abegell

 |  Version: SafeHouse Explorer USB Flash Drive Encryption 3.0

Pros

Very user friendly

Cons

You have to create a volume and move files into that volume instead of just creating a password for the thumb drive. Also cannot password protect CDs - would have to be a read only storage type file.
