Editors' review

This program provides parents with a reliable tool for shielding their children from objectionable material. We should note that to try the program, you must surrender your personal information at the developer's Web site--a requirement we found a bit objectionable.

Nevertheless, this program's features and performance impressed us. In our tests, the application proved intelligent enough to block almost all pornographic sites, yet to allow, for instance, scientific articles on nudity. We were impressed with the wide variety of filters--ranging from adult-only topics, such as sex and weapons--to potentially malicious e-mail clients and search engines. Also, you can control when a user is allowed to surf the Web. Not insignificantly, it blocks the use of popular instant-messaging applications and even multimedia players, too, though in our tests the pop-up blocker didn't work very well.

Safe Eyes is well-protected against deactivation and uninstallation, and its settings can't be changed without a password. Although many full-fledged PC-monitoring suites offer much of the same functionality, Safe Eyes 2006 still will help parents sleep easier at night.

"Full of flaws, does not work properly"

    May 01, 2014   |   By muktamao

    Version: Safe Eyes 6.0.239

    Pros

Tech support is helpful, though ideally I should not need hours of my time with tech support to make it work. Tired of working for free for these companies.

    Cons

First, in places where there was a weak signal, the software would not connect to the internet and would not allow me to access it. Hours and ours with tech support eventually solved it. Then, for months it simply stops working and I can access sites that I had blocked. Hours and more hours of tech support and no soltion in site. Asking for my money back. By something else.

    "Failure from square 1"

    February 17, 2014   |   By jdeblock250

    Version: Safe Eyes 6.0.239

    Pros

    None whatsoever.

    Cons

Rendered the PC useless with sluggishness and browser crashes, and even tanked my McAfee security suite! Tech support acted as if they had never heard this complaint, I spent all day removing and reinstalling software, scrubbing the PC (it needed it anyway, but...), and firefox crashed within a minute.

    Summary

We will get a refund, hopefully. Don't waste your time or money even trying.

    "Very Disappointed"

    February 01, 2014   |   By morahrs

    Version: Safe Eyes 6.0.239

    Pros

    Blocked sites.

    Cons

After my subscription expired, I could not connect to any site on the internet, including sites that were previously accesible. I attempted to uninstall the program, but could not do that without calling customer service to receive an uninstall code. However, the uninstall code did not work. I was told that I have to wait a few hours because there were too many attempts. I removed the program with a different uninstaller, but the internet was still blocked, and now I couldn't even access the program to uninstall it using the code. when I called customer service, they told me: Just go to control panel and remove the program. I told them the program was not there, but the representative repeated himself over and over with the same useless advise. I will have to format my entire hard drive to get this program out.

    Summary

    Incompetent customer service

    "Not so great anymore."

    January 18, 2014   |   By patriarchz

    Version: Safe Eyes 6.0.239

    Pros

    Customizable.
    White lists.
Blocks programs as well as websites.

    Cons

SLOW... sometimes so slow the computer is un-useable.
Customer service used to be great, then they were bought out by some software giant and (as you'd expect), it's terrible now.

    Summary

I used to recommend this product, but it just isn't worthwhile at this moment. Maybe they will get their act together and make restore it to the great product it was, but until then, stay away.

"Best overall protection for Windows PC that I've found"

    September 01, 2013   |   By dlmilla

    Version: Safe Eyes 6.0.239

    Pros

    1. Excellent tech support!! Rarely have i needed to wait more than 5 minutes in order to talk with someone. Friendly and quite knowledgeable.

    2. Numerous features, and very customizable. Impressive!

    3. Does what it is suppose to do!

    Cons

    1. Expensive, if you only need minimal protection there are cheaper options.

    2. Currently it only works on PC and Macbook. They don't have any "mobile" applications. They use to have an iPhone version, but not anymore.

    3. Purchased by McAfee a 18-24 months ago. Since then there has been minimal product development. Only 1 release since they purchased it. Not sure how well SE keeps up with the changing environment.

    Summary

I use the "whitelist" feature which allows me to create an "allowed list." The only websites I can go to are those on this list. It works pretty good!

It is a very robust program that allows allows for a significant amount of control over how SE works for a particular user. There are cheaper options, but if you need significant protection this is a good option.

"It used to be such a good product, but not anymore..."

    May 21, 2013   |   By kayagee

    Version: Safe Eyes 6.0.239

    Pros

    Tech support staff is polite

    Cons

Tech support is incompetent, follow-up and issue resolution is horrendous. I've had issues open for months with no follow-up, their record-keeping is horrible. One proposed solution was to delete my entire account and have me rebuild all of my (3) kids' settings manually (NO THANKS).
HUGE performance drag on the system.
    YouTube blocking options don't work.
Etc Etc Etc - very disappointing downslide in the past few years.

    Summary

I am looking for suggestions for a replacement product!

    "BEWARE!!!Crashes browsers.Very poor customer service."

    January 20, 2013   |   By dumpsterfood

    Version: Safe Eyes 6.0.239

    Pros

    Filter ok when working

    Cons

Slows system down massively when it is working. Crashes browsers every minute. Customer service fixes do not work and make things worse most of the time. Do not waste your money on this product.

    Summary

First installation seemed to function fine with exception of slowing the system a bit. First update slowed the system massively. Like a huge anchor was dropped and was dragging the system down. Next update started to crash browsers. Firefox, IE, and Chrome were crashing regularly. Chrome was usually crashing on a minute by minute basis. I have this installed on three machines with different OS versions on each and it has the same symptoms on all the systems. Systems work just fine when the Safe Eyes is disabled. Customer service was nice but ineffective. They sent me a link to install an older version promising to fix the issue. Once installed I loaded Chrome and it crashed immediately and then it took about 20 reloads to get it to open. Look at the reviews of this software before McAfee got control of it and it looks like it was good and functional. Being past my 30 days for a refund, I bet I am out of luck. Maybe I can keep someone else from wasting their money. Do not buy this unless you want problems. Wish I could give this negative stars, it would be more appropriate.

"Many Problems - Terrible Customer Service"

    December 28, 2012   |   By randallbarnes

    Version: Safe Eyes 6.0.239

    Pros

It blocks sites (when it's working).

    Cons

    * Didn't install properly
    * Couldn't uninstall/reinstall it from my own computer
    * It blocked its own site and other non-offensive sites
    * Got mixed messages from customer service reps
    * Despite paying for it, it later showed up as a trial version
    * Overseas customer support was polite but never resolved my problem
    * Had to make numerous calls and write many emails regarding my issue
    * Customer service kept no record of previous calls/emails
    * Was told a rep would call me back and it never happened

    Summary

I was VERY dissatisfied with my experience overall. The sad thing is that I had used this product several years ago and everything went smoothly. I guess the fact that McAfee owns Safe Eyes now has had a VERY damaging effect on them.

I would highly advise you to go with another company.

    "Safe Eyes....used to be good"

    December 22, 2012   |   By XtraFibre

    Version: Safe Eyes 6.0.239

    Pros

    Since McAfee took over...NONE

    Cons

Latest version causes major issues with computers connected via WIFI. Downloads won't complete, files are corrupted, and browsing is super slow. Tech support is a total joke.
