Editors' review

Iron is a free Web browser from SRWare. It's based on Google's Chromium core, which is the basis of many browsers, including Google's own Chrome. Like Chrome and the others, Iron is super-fast and accepts extensions, themes, and developer tools. What sets it apart is a lack of the Google-centric features that some have criticized for violating users' privacy, such as reporting your browsing habits and suggesting content (and advertising) based on the results.

Iron's start page offers quick Web and Image searching and a Quick Access section that let us upload pictures, access Chrome-compatible extensions and themes, rate our home page at a ratings site, view info about our IP address, and even watch funny videos at Epic Fail. Of course, we could customize the view, including the Quick Access links, using the usual Chrome-style options. We could import or export our bookmarks, create application shortcuts, and manage search engines, to name a few. We browsed to some Web sites, which loaded as fast as with other Chromium-based browsers, which is to say about as fast as browsers get nowadays. We saw no functionality issues that seemed to be due to Iron's breaking the umbilical cord to Google HQ, or any functionality issue at all, for that matter. The program installed conventionally and left user data behind in its program folder when we uninstalled it. That's not necessarily a bad thing since many users may prefer to delete such data securely.

Of course, not everyone looks at Google and sees the Borg, but if Chromium's built-in reporting and Web integration raise issues with you, resistance is not futile. You simply need some Iron in your online diet.

"Has trouble installing in Win 8 or 8.1 as a default."

    February 13, 2014   |   By GCG1000

    Version: SRWare Iron 32.0.1750.01

    Pros

Nice browser; good chrome clone; fast & secure. Good implementation of Blink engine.

    Cons

Currently can't be used easily as your default browser in Win 8.x.

    Summary

    Use Comodo Dragon, instead!

"Literally just chrome with a crappy icon."

    February 02, 2014   |   By Presentasia

    Version: SRWare Iron 31.0.1700.00

    Pros

Let's be honest. It's chrome, and chrome is awesome.

    Cons

IT IS JUST CHROME with a frigging crappy icon. I have yet to see one single unique feature to this browser that isn't already there in Chrome.

    Summary

Why bother using this browser if it is literally the same as Google Chrome, with a downgrade at that (they could've at least kept the logo if this is just Chrome repackaged).

"Read-only pages; not for banking, brokerage, comments."

    January 29, 2014   |   By ckcomodo

    Version: SRWare Iron 31.0.1700.00

    Pros

Rapid return of URLs entered. Supports several ad-blockers, especially do not track. Rare to crash.

    Cons

Cannot do much any on-line banking or brokerage at all, rejects many "post comment" buttons when done writing them, even with javascript "enabled." Not to mention limit orders, etc. Would not trust to execute options period.

    Summary

OK on my machine that does not support IE; needing Comodo Ice Dragon for sensitive or respond mode to do as expected workably .

"Excellent, but stay away from their "Store"."

    January 18, 2014   |   By ToughAsSilkNails

    Version: SRWare Iron 31.0.1700.00

    Pros

I don't know what's going on with Chrome. Mine started loading slow and YouTube was virtually useless. Not any more. My browser starts right up, so does YouTube.

    Cons

BUT, do not use their "store", it's absolute garbage. Many of the "download" links are strategically placed. For instance, if you select Adblock, you see a few very large download "buttons". The one for Adblock is in small print with a >click here<. Be very careful.

Worse, even the ABOUT page is useless, it has ads and sets you up to "Download" or "Play Now", all referring to Video Download Converter. Video Download Converter is NOT AN EXTENSION, it's a tool bar and defined as having "malicious traits".

    Fair Warning.

    Summary

Love the city, but don't visit the store.

"Works fantastic in my XP VM."

    December 26, 2013   |   By lylejk

    Version: SRWare Iron 31.0.1700.00

    Pros

Compatibility; I'm looking for a browser replacement for my aging XP VM especially since Microsoft is going to completely stop support for it in April. I use the VM for sandbox purposes. There are more and more sites that just won't support IE8 anymore. A member of a website I frequent suggested Iron. I refuse to use Chrome due to the tracking issues; Iron doesn't do that. I've since hosed my VM (it's what you do when you play in the sandbox; delete the box constantly), but still, it's the major contender for my browser of the future (a pun I know; it's in their ad. lol). It also does pretty good with HTML5 support (IE8 is quite lacking to say the least). The biggest thing with Iron is it's speed; it's a firecracker compared to IE8. :)

    Cons

Only one. I'm a Yahooligan and there is no Yahoo Toolbar for Chrome (or Iron). It's available for Firefox (the other contender on my list). If I can work around that issue to my liking, then I will decide on Iron since it's quite quick.

"People downrating are paid shills. Iron is excellent."

    December 23, 2013   |   By grndzro

    Version: SRWare Iron 31.0.1700.00

    Pros

    Does not crash
    Fast
    Same compatibility as Chrome

    Cons

    None.
I need more than 10 characters in cons so here they are.

    Summary

This browser has never let me down. Been using it for a couple years now.

    "Good so far..."

    November 05, 2013   |   By AlcoveSpring

    Version: SRWare Iron 28.0.1550.01

    Pros

    Does not crash like Chrome.

    Cons

This browser uses some Microsoft browser folders for storage. So, even if you clear everything for all time from the chrome/history page, you still need something like CCleaner to delete the rest.
(So, I just use CCleaner instead of the chrome/history page to delete my history.)

    Summary

This browser seems to be working fine. I have been using it for about a month. IE was too slow. FF kept locking up daily for about a minute or two. (I think it was checking for updates.) Opera alters your Registry. Chrome kept crashing. This seems to be a good browser. I hope it works out.

    "Good Chrome Alternative, but..."

    March 13, 2013   |   By tonester59

    Version: SRWare Iron 25.0.1400

    Pros

Light and fast; accepts most chrome extensions; eliminates Google tracking (but not sure if SRWare is tracking instead); seems stable, but haven't had it long enough to really tell.

    Cons

As with all Chrome knock-offs, updates will be lagging. For something critical, this could be a major flaw. Also, I'm not sure if it will work with all AV programs that use "web-guards". Security remains an open question.

    Summary

I was glad to have the chance to try out Iron, but ultimately, feel that it's not for me. A lot of people will like it, though, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. For many, a much better alternative would be Comodo Dragon, but it's a true security browser and may conflict with your Anti-Virus (it does with mine). Still, I applaud the efforts of the SRWare group in providing a Google-less Chrome as privacy is becoming a bigger and bigger issue, and I wish them well.

"indexed searches / built in advertising - SUCKS"

    February 02, 2013   |   By googlesux

    Version: SRWare Iron 24.0.1350

    Pros

    its fast
    no issues installing
Best out of a bad bunch

    Cons

    Advertising
    indexed searches
    searches containing adverts
website tracking is done by SRIRON

    Summary

ive sent several emails to sr and the same reply is always sent back " we have to make money somehow " ( summed up )

if they index searches and send unique user id's then there is no PRIVACY as they state

unless you live in the USA search is useless ( generic results with little to no reference on what you searched )

SR is misleading users into thinking it is a secure private browser - you still need to add things like adblock plus , do not track , remove google tracking 1.6 , just to name a few

over last 6 months sriron has changed to be just like the rest of them

    Pros

fast load times...handles Java well at 32 and 64 bit - transition is smooth

    Cons

Noticed a slight glitch when downloading files...seems to bog down at some points

    Summary

Very Good simple browser with changeable skins - found only 1 minor glitch and some of the skins are a little junky..but other than that it is a Good browser overall
