"An RTS game that fits the realism of any other"

    April 8, 2006  |   By Gloryn

Version: Rome: Total War Barbarian Invasion demo

    Pros

I never tried any of the Total War series til' I dled the demo. And lemme' tell you, as a stict gamer who only chooses thoes very very few really good games to even mention? Boy is this game worthy!

Rome Total War and its Expansion are both very awsome RTS games that sport the realism that has been missing from the RTS genre for quite awhile. The over all division from something like Halo and StarCraft was simply the fact that realism wasn't involved as deeply in StarCraft. No head shots, nothing. Just gambling for the right type of troop to kill your opponent. While Total War sports the same principle (which dont get me wrong, "counters" is a real military principle) , it also adds so much more. Your man have stamina, morale and will. Your general can lead, encourage and demorlize. You can truely stratigize by flanking, charging with a spear head, Calvary strikes through the center of a front line. EVERYTHING is possible on here. Horses trample troops; Archers fire in vollies, not at a single unit ( i always hated that in other games ), i mean, this game is just uber realistic. This is the real meaning of an RTS. This is a Generals toy; one of the games that you will probely see real Commanders playing with. If you love history, this game takes its standard even farther with its indepth detail. The game is so effective, so realistic and so close to the history it reprosents that the History Channel has actually used it to render historical scenes for their broadcasts. Now tell me this game isnt worth noticing if its not that good lolz

    Cons

Demo didnt allow much in the way to experiment to actually find many cons. There are though, afew cons that I did notice. Some interface issues while very very fluidic and easy, could've been done in other ways. For instance, the dragging the cursor to tell your men how to line up, the formation always began at the tip of the selected cursor, it didnt fan out from the center of it like on Rise of Nations.

Sometimes I really wish you could select the units individually still through a sub command or something, like, Hold down ALT then left click to select specific troops rather than their whole Group.

As with all 3D games, there is the minor graphics issues that accure that sometimes you cant help but notice; Like the swordsman singing his sword at a troop that happens to be 15 feet away. Looks hilarious sometimes.

:::Note to thoes who claim the GFX really really suck:::

The GFX in this game can par with the detial of an RPG, if your grafix are seriously crappy, its because your system is very very slow and couldnt handle the high grafics. I can, and everything from seeing the troops individual faces to the metal sheeming in the sunlight and reflections is possible to see.

"Your senses will love it but it can be frustrating"

    March 28, 2006  |   By anarchistica

Version: Rome: Total War Barbarian Invasion demo

    Pros

The music and sounds are fantastic and the graphics are even better.

The gameplay seems fairly realistic, i can imagine real life battles would be more similar to this game than to most others.

    Cons

Everyone seems to have the exact same head. Also, the AI will sometimes have infantry chase mounted archers whom they will never be able to catch. Worst of all is that sometimes your whole army will rout for no apparent reason, even if you've already "won" and are chasing down the routing enemy.
