Not to be confused with a certain anime hit from the '80s, Robotek HD is a turn-based, robotic fighting game for the Android platform. Robotek takes place in a post-human world where robots have taken over to create a new world order. It's up to you to drive out the robotic invaders, one node at a time, and take back your home world.
GameplayIn Robotek, the objective is to weaken the enemy defense lines and reduce enemy health to zero. Combat in Robotek revolves around three major tactics: summoning support bots, espionage, and assault. Support bots provide extra artillery and front-line defense. Espionage consists of creating force fields, weakening enemy stats, and hijacking control of enemy bots. Assault mode features high-damage attacks. All orders are unconventionally carried out through a mini slot machine. Hexage struck a nice balance of strategy and luck with this system, which makes Robotek's battles both casual and engaging. Battles are also easy to follow, thanks to a window full of bot descriptions presented before every attack.
FeaturesLike many of Hexage's releases, such as Evac and Radiant, Robotek HD is chock-full of neon effects, smooth animations, and lounge-electro house music. There are over 200 battles in the campaign to keep players occupied. Unfortunately, all battles are against the same robot, but with varying difficulty. We would've liked to have seen, at the very least, different robots to fight against or perhaps even a change of scenery once in a while to diversify the matches a bit more. Despite these drawbacks, Robotek HD is still a fun game to kill time with when you're commuting or taking a coffee break.
Robotek is a "freemium" game; you can purchase in-game items to boost your robot stats, increase the odds of rolling certain attacks, and gain other special abilities. Although beefing up your stats will help you tackle the stronger nodes early on, none of the purchases are critical to completing the game.
Wrap-upRobotek doesn't exactly score points for variety, but it sticks to its main strengths: presentation in art, sound, and guided gameplay. Robotek HD is available for free in the Android Market.
