"Roboform Not Honoring Formerly Free Lifetime Upgrades"

    March 24, 2011  |   By TeaRowz

I have always loved Roboform until a forced upgrade to version 7.

Many Flash and Silverlight webforms can't be filled by Roboform.

I own two version 6 Roboform licenses that clearly came with free lifetime upgrades. I cannot upgrade to the latest Firefox 4 browser because my Roboform version won't attach to it. I would need to pay for the upgrade to Roboform 7. As everyone knows, browser upgrades are necessary for Internet security. So in effect, my online security is being risked, and being held hostage by the forced Roboform upgrade.

From their FAQ 2005 - Oct 2010 (courtesy of Wayback Machine

Q: If I upgrade to the new version of RoboForm, do I have to pay again for RoboForm Pro?

A: So far we did not charge for upgrades. Just install the new version over the old version. However, if you upgrade from ver 5 to ver 6, you will lose Pro status and you will have to activate RoboForm Pro again, but you do not have to buy it again."

No explanation of this given by RoboForm or by SiberSystems, circumvents the fact that there has been a serious breach of the contracts made with owners of previous version licenses. It is neither ethical or honest to go back and change the terms of a license agreement. At the very least, those owners of previous version licenses (including those purchased before 9/1/10) should be 'grandfathered in', and not be charged for any future upgrades.

There are those who would like to see a class action lawsuit filed against Roboform. My remedy will be, if Roboform doesn't reinstate the free lifetime upgrade policy, to ditch Roboform, and use LastPass (which reportedly imports Roboform v6 data).

If you made your purchase on or after September 1st, 2010 you are elligible for a free conversion.

Can I still use RoboForm ver 6?

    * Yes, you can, simply download version 6 from this link.
    * But this version is frozen, so no new releases will be issued.

I have purchased 4-5 Roboform licenses over a number of years. I upgraded one computer to Firefox 4 only to find that Robo form was disabled. Clicking Roboform icon opened a page trying to sell me an upgrade. I have no intention of agreeing to a subscription. I will not ever patronise Siber Systems again.

I run a number of trade associations and have in the past recommended RoboForm to members and associates, mostly small to midsized businesses, about 200,000. I will shortly publish a story about Siber Systems and recommend that people migrate to LastPass.

Since we routinely work with contingency litigators on patent related manners I will be sending a memo to a bunch of firms suggesting that they consider a class action response to his attempt to blackmail customers into greasing their sleazy palms. This is flat out fraud.
