"works well, but not great, customer service lacking"
Version: RitePen for Windows 3.5
Pros
above average character recognition, recognizes full words and cursive or print
Cons
slightly difficult UI for making changes to recognized text, crashes frequently on my machine, customer service didn't respond to email.
Summary
I recently bought a handwriting pen for use with my windows machine and the bundle software was awful, so in seeking out handwriting recognition, i came across ritepen. It works well for simple tasks, but is slightly counterproductive since it doesn't really "learn" your writing. It did work well, but was inconsistent. It started to crash frequently on my system within a few hours of install. When I emailed their customer service asking if it was a problem i could expect in the full version, they never got back to me. Won't install, won't purchase, but seems to work above average (compared to other handwriting recognition)

"Good features, but unstable and buggy"
Version: RitePen for Windows 2.0.21
Pros
When it worked, it was far superior to entering text on the MS Input pad. Good (not great) word recognition, great gesture features (web manipulation, etc.)
Cons
During my 20 day trial, it had 15 fatal errors, and had to shut down. Then on day 10, it started acting very strange. It started affecting mouse. A single click from the mouse, would result in a line drawn by the program. It resulted in whole lines of text being selected when trying to place a cursor, having to double and triple click web links, inadvertent movement of selected text or columns. Problem always went away when RitePen was disabled. I uninstalled, and reinstalled, same problem. I uninstalled again, purged all registry entries, and that fixed it. Then 5 days later, after installing again, it did it again. Contacted support, and they were interested in helping, until they found out I was still in my 30 day trial, then no reply. I'm running on Toshiba r15-s822 with Win XP Tablet, so very basic system, should have no compatibility issues. BUYER BEWARE. USE THE 30 DAY TRIAL BEFORE BUYING. If you get thru 30 days, and no problems, buy it, well worth the cost. However, if your experience is like mine, you'll probably agree with me that this version is still in beta stages, and not ready for commercial release. I'll buy in a heartbeat once they fix the issues.

"Best of its kind"
Version: RitePen for Windows 2.0.21
Pros
I already tried 4 similar software, but this is bettter than any other product. I would recommend it to everybody.
Not to forget the very low price, and the high-value-for-your-money ratio.
Cons
I would need the following two functions:
1. recognition of handwritten pages (scanned or digitized with a tablet) stored in popular picture formats (jpg, bmp, gif);
2. support for Eastern European languages having accented characters.
When these two features were implemented, ritePen will be the best HWR sofware in the world.

"Improves recognition dramatically!"
Version: RitePen for Windows 2.0.21
Summary
I have been frustrated trying to use a number of tablet PC programs. Windows Journal worked great, but FranklinCovey TabletPlanner was very poor in the recognition department. RitePen changed that dramatically. It allows me to write anywhere on screen (NO ANNOYING INK INPUT PANEL) and it reads most everything I write the FIRST time! I use it in OpenOffice, entering info in any number of programs, jotting notes, and it works very well. Great utility for $20. Makes my TabletPC a much friendlier machine.

Summary
This is the fourth handwriting recognition software I have tried. I was about ready to give up. This one really works and is easy to use.
