"Works for me on an old scanner w/ old XP PC"
Version: RemoteScan 4.3
Pros
Supports old parallel scanner
Easy install, allows password protect, IP range whitelist or blacklist, port assignment allowedCons
No "cons" for my experience, maybe a confusing question in the server install (re which order to install server vs client), but it worked and I still haven't looked for help or documentation. 4 stars=excllent.
Summary
This software is almost as old as my Canon parallel-port scanner, and I'm glad I found it. My old XP desktop computer has a parallel/printer port but my main computer doesn't. I use Nuance Paperport on my newer laptop to store and organize documents - PaperPort won't run on the old PC. Running across the room to the scanner is a lot better than buying a new scanner just to have wires connected to the laptop.
Sorry to see that others had probs with it, but it works seamlessly for me. My PCTools firewall asked me the normal Allow/Block questions and created the appropriate rules. My scanner is a very simple one CanoScan FB620P and I don't tweak the defaults very much, so I don't know what advanced features (other than color vs B/W/greyscale etc) could possibly cause a problem.
I have tested it with MS Clip Organizer also, and it worked just as well.
MAybe I could have figured out how Vista Home Premium and XPsp3 could redirect LPT1, but I tried all my "net use" and "net share" and GUI mapping tools and *I* couldn't do it without Remotescan. -

"only if scanner sharing was this easy..."
Version: RemoteScan 4.3
Pros
the publisher description sounds very good
Cons
but it doesn't do what it claims. i have tried to connect to my HP PSC500 and the main problem for me was that the software is not stable. it did freeze my Photoshop CS2 and MGI Photo Suite when i tried to import an image. 1 out of 10 times it worked properly but still even if it does, you are not able to access features if your scanner was connected directly to your computer. i find capturix scan share to be more user friendly and much more stable with additional capabilities. for remotescan, you need to install the software once as server on the machine the scanner is connected to, and on all other computers from which you want to access the scanner you need to install the client software. (server and client are bundled in the same file you just choose when you are installing) in contrast for capturix you just install it on the machine you have your scanner attached and from any other machine you just use the IP assigned to the scanner via any browser. i do not recommend remotescan. my mate who installed remotescan with me at the same time on his computer had similar complaints as i did. good luck!

"Not perfect for every environment but works great in our case!"
Version: RemoteScan 4.3
Pros
I have a USB scanner plugged into my workstation at home. Occasically, my husband or son need to scan something and I used to have to stop what I was doing and allow them to sit at my machine to scan. Now, they can use my scanner from their own workstations and I can continue my work!
Cons
Obviously, it doesn't prevent the "remote" user from having to physically place their document into the scanner but at least the user of the "scannner" workstation no longer has to get up from their machine so someone else can scan a document.

"No true functionality"
Version: RemoteScan 4.3
Pros
N/A
Cons
I'll have to agree with dogtired on this. This program does not give the user and idea of what the software can truly do and cannot do. Sharing a scanner seems like a simple thing to do, but apparently such technology does not exist in shareware land.

"the download is rubbish and has no functionality"
Version: RemoteScan 4.3
Pros
there is nothing to like, the program does noting but "supposedly" lets you use a "assumed" scanner in some location.
Cons
It does NOTHING! it is just a lame ploy for you to download a code you enter to get a discount of a program you will never buy because you cant try it with this download...
Ask yourself, would you buy a pig in a bag?
The other 2 reviews on this product are so outrageously lame they have to be planted by piad employees of the company, read them and you decide, dont waste your time on this.

"Finally a great piece of software"
Version: RemoteScan 4.3

I've been trying to share my scanner for years. Now I'm doing it and it was a breeze to setup.

"Turned my ordinary scanner into a network scanner"
Version: RemoteScan 4.3
Summary
This is fantastic! I was about to have to spend nearly $1,000 for a network scanner at our office, when I found this software. Painless installation too. Nothing but praise!
