RecentFilesView

CNET Editors' review

by: CNET Staff on February 27, 2009

This free system utility does just what its name suggests; it lets you view your most recently accessed files in one location. Just don't expect any help from the publishers, since their Web site is unavailable.

RecentFilesView has a very basic user interface with menu options and a toolbar across the top of the window. The rest of the window displays recent files information, including the modified and created times. The interface itself it pretty easy to figure out, but if needed, the Help menu only takes you to the publisher's Web site, which is no longer available. In our tests, the program listed more than 40 of our most recent files. Using the toolbar, we were able to select a file and open it. We were also able to save the selected file and copy it to our clipboard. The program even let us select multiple files at once and delete them.

The simple user interface will appeal to even the most novice users, and the executable file format means you don't have to install it. Despite the lack of help, this program does a good job of letting you manage your most recent files, regardless of type.

Publisher's Description

From NirSoft Freeware:

Each time that you open a file from Windows Explorer or from a standard open/save dialog-box, the name of the file that you opened is recorded by the operating system. Some of the names are saved into the 'Recent' folder. Other are saved into the Registry. This utility display the list of all recently opened files, and allows you to delete unwanted filename entries. You can also save the files list into text/html/xml file.

What's new in this version: Version 1.15 added 'Open Selected File With' option to open a file with non-default program.
