"Quite possibly the best piece of software on the internet yet"

    December 15, 2007  |   By Iendicis

    Version: Quintessential Player 4.51

    Pros

When I first reviewed this program, I wasn't very impressed, but of course that was before everything decided to get all bloated on me (like Winamp and Foobar). So I was back to square one, looking for a new music program to suit my tastes and my wimpy processor, when I found QCD.

QCD is free, fast, and pretty. If you turn off many of the features, you can get a music program that will play nearly anything, look good doing it, and take up about 50 mhz. It used OGG files as its main media source but plays just about anything after a plugin download or two. By the end of my hour long test run on my first machine, my install had a feature-set that would make Foobar run home crying.

I used to be a Foobar manic, but that suddenly became slow and sluggish after extended use. I went back to Winamp, but then discovered that the 5.5 release was horribly bloated with AOL music ads, internet radio clicks, and a very poorly-done unifying skin that only made the program more like iTunes. So then, without a music program, I went way back to Windows Media Player 11 and bled out of my ears due to horrid sound quality. That's where QCD comes in, whcih did all I wanted it to do, and more.

    Cons

A lot of skins I tried didn't work, with misplaced buttons and gaps where odds and ends should be. Of course, this isn't the program's fault entirely, but the standard skin does leave a lot to be desired, and those looking for something new might not be overly pleased with the community skinning support, especially those who came from Winamp.

Several points also give off a slight lack of professional quality, such as little issues above as well as poor text placement in menus and such. It also took control of my iPod from iTunes for a little bit, but that was temporary. It's the little thinks I have to pick on, though, because the rest of the program is so damn good.

Waiting eagerly for QMP, which will finally add a library-like media interface onto QCD. Until the day arrives, long like Quintessential!

    "Great Low Resource Player"

    November 27, 2007  |   By davidvella

    Version: Quintessential Player 4.51

    Pros

This a great little program to listen to audio files quickly. I use it to avoid the long wait for Media Player to open and avoid putting songs I don't want in iTunes until I'm ready to put them there.

I highly recommend it for XP users

    Cons

It doesn't have a library, which is fine for me since I use itunes for that. It doesn't work with Vista. Stick with version 4.51 for XP and for Vista users I guess we will have to wait (I tried the development version on vista, and the experience was not good.)

"Great sound quality, better than Media Player and the likes"

    November 26, 2007  |

    Version: Quintessential Player 4.51

    Pros

Quintessential is not the newest around but still really sounds better than the other media players. Listen to the bass and to definition in mid/high and hear the difference.

"Quick Installation, over 100 skins to customize your player"

    August 13, 2007  |   By kidflavor

    Version: Quintessential Player 4.51

    Pros

I love how fast it was to install the program. I really love how many skins you can download and use. And I especially like how fast it loads. If you can't download the newest version of WM Player, and don't like how long it takes for iTunes to load, this is a great alternative!

    Cons

    no album covers
