    "Cancelled my order"

    March 2, 2010  |   By dndbrown

    Version: Quicken Essentials 2010

    Pros

    Works on a Mac

    Cons

    No bill pay.

    Summary

It is of no use to me. It was extremely disappointing to have to wait so long and then find out that it does not perform the functions I need. I think they really missed with their market studies.

"I got it for 35 bucks and it still isn't worth it."

    March 1, 2010  |   By condita

    Version: Quicken Essentials 2010

    Pros

It is less complete and less user friendly than Quicken 2006 but it runs Intel native.

    Cons

They dropped a number of useful interface features. Categories don't auto complete when you type a colon, they don't have a calculator built in to field entry, and the reports are almost useless.

    Summary

Everytime you enter a new transaction it resets the date to today's date. This makes entering a series of transactions painful. It doesn't automatically have an empty register record for you to enter data into, you have to explicitly tell it to add a new record every time. So again entering a series of transactions is more painful than it needs to be.

When you are entering a receipt with multiple items ( in a split) it no longer has a built-in calculator for summing a number of items within the same category or multiplying say 5 items at the same price.

When you are entering categories, the older version used to complete the current level category when you typed a colon now it just truncates the category name forcing you to delete the colon and start retyping again. It has a picker where you can choose the category from but it often truncates the categories so you can't tell what you are choosing until after it is entered in the register field. That wouldn't be so bad if you could resize the picker but that appears to be a no go also.

They also changed the way predictions are made for autofill field entry, so there is no longer a list where you can go delete an entry that you don't want used for autofill predictions.

I have yet to discover how to customize reports, but even date ranges lack a choice for previous year. I don't know about anyone else but if I want a 12 month date range, I usually want the prior year not the last 12 months.

I have been a software developer so I understand some of what they were up against, but it seems that the person in charge has his own agenda regardless of what customers want. That is usually not good for business.

    "This software is a joke!"

    February 26, 2010  |   By eriknokc

    Version: Quicken Essentials 2010

    Pros

    Extremely Basic

    Cons

Not worth $70, no way to customize or turn off features

    Summary

This is such a basic program, it should be a free web based program. It shows upcoming transactions in your register that you have not entered and there is no way to turn this feature off. You really don't know how much money you have in your bank account with your currently paid bills because of this. There is no way to customize any of the features in this software. This is the biggest joke of personal finance software ever! Quicken should pull it off the shelf, finish making this program and then put a complete product on the market. I would even settle for going back to Microsoft Money, if it was still made.
