Editors' review

With Quicken 2010, Intuit strives to make its flagship money management application easier to navigate and simpler to set up, thanks to spruced-up visuals and a refreshed start-up wizard. Although already a solid balance-keeper and financial assistant in previous versions, Quicken 2010 adds a few new features to visualize your monthly budget and assets.

The Quicken 2010 product family includes Quicken Starter Edition ($29.99) for tracking budgets and upcoming bills; Quicken Deluxe ($59.99), which includes tools to help you save up for a large purchase; Quicken Premier ($89.99), which helps track investments; Quicken Home and Business ($99.99); and Quicken Rental Property Management ($149.99). We evaluated Quicken Deluxe 2010.

Installation

At almost 70MB, Quicken Deluxe 2010 takes several minutes to install. Installation was painless up to the point when the software junked up our desktop with four icons: the Quicken icon, plus another three unwanted shortcuts advertising a Quicken credit card and other additional services.

Features

Quicken's core features continue doing what they've done for years: chiefly, importing your financial information to help you automatically and manually track your spending and savings. Not just a simple ledger for balancing your bank book, Quicken's additional tools also help alert you to upcoming bills and to your overall budget.

The Quicken 2010 product line gets a prettied-up interface that provides an at-a-glance summary of your finances.

In the 2010 edition, Intuit has applied some cosmetic changes that streamline and simplify the software. One change is a sleeker setup wizard to guide you through the process of importing your financial information, adding bill reminders, and setting up budgets. This wizard is moot if you're a returning user importing years of data from past Quicken versions, but new users will have an easier time getting started with this version than in years past.

A cleaner-looking home screen greets new and returning users, summarizing your financial standing in a glance. Pared-down navigation options also make it easier to find what you need. The most active new feature in Quicken 2010 takes a stab at automatically categorizing your transactions, like assigning Safeway to the Groceries category and your doctor's visits to the Medical category, with a little help from you if there's any doubt. In implementing this feature, Quicken plays catch-up to savvier online management apps, like Mint.com--which Intuit has since snapped up and plans to integrate--and its ilk. A new infographic in Quicken also helps you avoid late fees by displaying both how much cash is left in your coffers and which upcoming bills you should brace for.

Apart from the bill reminder and the autocategorization, it's Quicken's top layer, and select tools, that see the benefit of Quicken's design changes. Scratch the surface, however, and many of the app's second-tier tools--text-heavy calculators, planners, and lists with tiny font--feel as if they haven't been updated for years. The old-school layout may not bother legacy users or those who aren't put off by blocks of texts and charts, but others who have come to expect graphic representation of their data and clean design--say, the likes of former competitor Mint.com--may be inclined to shut the window and move on rather than wade through text.

As with past versions, Quicken Deluxe 2010 pulls in financial data from your banks and savings accounts. There are tools to create graphs and reports to itemize spending and banking, and to plot transactions on a calendar. There's also a debt reduction planner and a tax-planning wizard. Quicken could use a few more online social Net links, too, such as an option to sync reminders to an online calendar.

Intuit isn't blind to consumers' changing expectations in management software, online or offline. Quicken 2010's refurbished look does help, and conservatives who feel more comfortable keeping monetary details stored locally on their PCs rather than encrypted in the cloud lose nothing by downloading a free trial. For strictly online users with only personal finances (not investments, property, or small businesses), Intuit offers a free, online version that's similar to Mint.com. Quicken Online has budgeting, tracking, and reminders, encryption, an iPhone component, and the added capability to prep the data for tax time, assuming you also use one of Intuit's TurboTax products.

If you've used Quicken before, you can import data from previous years. The same goes for anyone switching over from Microsoft Money. With Microsoft Money killed off (additional details), Quicken is the best desktop alternative.

Some tools, like the bill reminder, are still a tad clunky.

Service and support
Quicken support is unchanged from previous years. E-mail support is free, and Intuit promises to respond within a day. Chat help is also free and is available 24-7. Phone assistance is $24.95 per call. However, some support calls are free, such as if you're having problems installing the program or converting data from earlier Quicken versions.

Overall
Quicken Deluxe 2010 remains a useful, if not exciting, management app equipped with rich balancing and budgeting tools. As for the future of Quicken, Intuit's recent acquisition of flashy online finance manager Mint.com could spell the merging of Mint's online budgeting and reminder features. Mint's exciting visual style could also draw younger users to future versions of Quicken, assuming Intuit goes that route, making future versions of the classic, but dated, money manager truly fresh.

"A user since the DOS days and thoroughly disappointed"

    July 19, 2014   |   By rkazoo

    Version: Quicken Deluxe 2014 R5

    Pros

Don't have the patience to figure what works and what doesn't

    Cons

    Slow. Slow. Slow.

    Summary

I'm a professional technologist and over the years have implemented Intuit products for a number of small to midsize companies. So disappointed in where this product has gone. It is unusable. I've re-installed, tweaked, followed suggestions on tech websites, and still can't get acceptable performance. I will be using a combination of Excel and Mint.com.

    "Where's the Beef?"

    June 12, 2014   |   By drotto

    Version: Quicken Deluxe 2014 R5

    Pros

    It's the only viable alternative.

    Cons

Bugs, bugs, bugs . . . and more bugs. It amazes me that Quicken has been so successful. There's a lot of sizzle here, but no meat. Basic functions (like transaction matching) do not work properly. Duplicate transactions download to the both the correct and incorrect account. There are constant prompts asking if a transaction is actually another (completely unrelated) transaction, transactions are downloaded with an incorrect payee automatically filled in, which I have to manually correct.

    Summary

As a former Microsoft Money user I can say without reservation that Quicken is a horrible program (I moved to Quicken only because MM was dropped by Microsoft). Quicken needs to put effort into making the software work before focusing any additional effort on cutesy graphs and "advice" features. I would not be a user if there were a viable alternative. An early 2000s version of MM was better than Quicken 2014.

"Previous version was working OK. Why change it?"

    June 06, 2014   |   By pgayle

    Version: Quicken Deluxe 2014 R5

    Pros

I can still pay my bills.

My mortgage has become very complicated. All I want is to keep track of the balance.

    Cons

Too complicated. I am not stupid. But I don't need all these "features" for keeping track of assets, debts and bill pay. It is buggy.

    Summary

I have used this since 1990s; DOS version. That was all I needed. I loved it. Each upgrade is worse. I would get rid of it except I have 20 years of data in it.

"They should have left well-enough alone"

    May 31, 2014   |   By sandyj5k

    Version: Quicken Deluxe 2014 R5

    Pros

Most of the previous features have been retained. Keeps the checkbook properly.

    Cons

    Program CAN'T ADD! 575 shares @ $10.78 + $9,053??!!
Downloaded stock prices don't match what S&P has?! Even with correction, the result was wrong.
Editing split transactions sometimes hops to the next transaction.

    Summary

My financial life is built into Quicken. I've used it since 1987. Now I can't trust the calculations it makes let alone trust it to keep track of investments. Wish I could go back to 2011 version. I upgraded to retain the stock price download feature but now it doesn't work right! I CAN'T COMPLETELY TRUST QUICKEN ANYMORE.

    "Trust these reviews."

    May 18, 2014   |   By vjviii

    Version: Quicken Deluxe 2014 R5

    Pros

    It was on sale.

    Cons

It was still not worth it. Bugs, bugs and more bugs. I purchased Quickbooks Premier 2014 the same time and it, too, is infested.

    Summary

If after reading these reviews you still buy this software, at any price, you're nuts. Go get help. Now excuse me, I'm late for my therapy session.

"Barely usable... maybe not usable at all"

    April 27, 2014   |   By georgepond

    Version: Quicken Deluxe 2014 R5

    Pros

This is substantially defective software, with some resemblance to earlier versions which worked. It doesn't destroy your files, but the interface is not navigable.

    Cons

Screen is unresponsive. Font sizes are often tiny, yet others on same screen are large. Resizing the window often leaves you with a blank, light blue window. Often can't see or get to downloaded transactions.

    Summary

R7 release remains buggy beyond usability. The product should not be marketed until it is rebuilt, thoroughly tested, and provided to registered persons (who cannot be called users, because the product is unusable)

    Version: Quicken Deluxe 2014 R5

    Pros

    None compared to previous versions

    Cons

Everything is different. All my data is out of whack. Completely did away with simple budgeting. Not user friendly at all. Freezes and takes forever to populate fields and scroll.

"probs with focus; paste; search return; adjusting split"

    April 04, 2014   |   By OlyLady

    Version: Quicken Deluxe 2014 R5

    Pros

I have been a loyal Quicken user since 1994. I have always been more than satisfied with the product and use it heavily.

    Cons

Quicken 2014 has major problems which would cause me to switch after 20 years if only there was something to switch to! The five are: losing focus; pasting; search return; adjusting splits; and speed. I formerly copied a lot of payment and receipt data from emails. In this version, when you switch to another application and return to Quicken, it loses focus and you need to click back in the same field you were in formerly. Then only one paste will work per session. Whatever is the first thing copied to the Clipboard after opening Quicken is the only thing it will paste, no matter how many things you copy afterward. Third, after searching, it returns you to the top of your register -- every time, no matter where your focus was when the search began. Fourth, when you type a new amount in a split transaction, both the button to adjust and the button to cancel invoke the Cancel function. Finally, this version is simply Slow on everything from changing a transaction to reconciling.

"Quicken has sadly become a headache!"

    April 02, 2014   |   By hotrodgrandma19

    Version: Quicken Deluxe 2014 R5

    Pros

I like some of the new features. That's all.

    Cons

Too many to list. Let's just say, I agree with others comments. And that's sad. I've been a Quicken user for many years and stuck with Quicken 2012 because I heard 2013 was very problematic. Being forced to buy 2014, I upgraded, only to have to spend days getting it to a point of being usable. The customer service is laughable. I even had to tell a lady where to go within the program. All people I communicated with didn't know anything without trying to look it up. My online queries have been no help either. I just discovered another "bug", something that is not working. It's very frustrating! I don't know what's happened over the last few years, but it's very disappointing. And I'm also wondering if they will say, come next year, that we will need to upgrade again in order to continue to use some important features. If they do, to me, that would be like bribing users to continue to purchase, and I will not take their bait if they do. So, current users, keep this in mind.

    Summary

I'm sorry to say that I cannot and would not recommend this program to anyone. It's completely true to say, it is not user friendly. I'm very computer savvy and it's not even user friendly for me simply because of all the bugs! New features mean nothing to a user if the program doesn't work properly! We shouldn't have to figure a "work around" to use it. You shouldn't present a product that is so-o-o-o buggy. Not from a company like Intuit. I don't even want to give it one star, but I will.

    Updated on Apr 2, 2014

I do have the latest Quicken 2014 update "fix", R7.
