Quicken Deluxe 2014

CNET Editors' review

With Quicken 2010, Intuit strives to make its flagship money management application easier to navigate and simpler to set up, thanks to spruced-up visuals and a refreshed start-up wizard. Although already a solid balance-keeper and financial assistant in previous versions, Quicken 2010 adds a few new features to visualize your monthly budget and assets.

The Quicken 2010 product family includes Quicken Starter Edition ($29.99) for tracking budgets and upcoming bills; Quicken Deluxe ($59.99), which includes tools to help you save up for a large purchase; Quicken Premier ($89.99), which helps track investments; Quicken Home and Business ($99.99); and Quicken Rental Property Management ($149.99). We evaluated Quicken Deluxe 2010.

Installation

At almost 70MB, Quicken Deluxe 2010 takes several minutes to install. Installation was painless up to the point when the software junked up our desktop with four icons: the Quicken icon, plus another three unwanted shortcuts advertising a Quicken credit card and other additional services.

Features

Quicken's core features continue doing what they've done for years: chiefly, importing your financial information to help you automatically and manually track your spending and savings. Not just a simple ledger for balancing your bank book, Quicken's additional tools also help alert you to upcoming bills and to your overall budget.

The Quicken 2010 product line gets a prettied-up interface that provides an at-a-glance summary of your finances.

In the 2010 edition, Intuit has applied some cosmetic changes that streamline and simplify the software. One change is a sleeker setup wizard to guide you through the process of importing your financial information, adding bill reminders, and setting up budgets. This wizard is moot if you're a returning user importing years of data from past Quicken versions, but new users will have an easier time getting started with this version than in years past.

A cleaner-looking home screen greets new and returning users, summarizing your financial standing in a glance. Pared-down navigation options also make it easier to find what you need. The most active new feature in Quicken 2010 takes a stab at automatically categorizing your transactions, like assigning Safeway to the Groceries category and your doctor's visits to the Medical category, with a little help from you if there's any doubt. In implementing this feature, Quicken plays catch-up to savvier online management apps, like Mint.com--which Intuit has since snapped up and plans to integrate--and its ilk. A new infographic in Quicken also helps you avoid late fees by displaying both how much cash is left in your coffers and which upcoming bills you should brace for.

Apart from the bill reminder and the autocategorization, it's Quicken's top layer, and select tools, that see the benefit of Quicken's design changes. Scratch the surface, however, and many of the app's second-tier tools--text-heavy calculators, planners, and lists with tiny font--feel as if they haven't been updated for years. The old-school layout may not bother legacy users or those who aren't put off by blocks of texts and charts, but others who have come to expect graphic representation of their data and clean design--say, the likes of former competitor Mint.com--may be inclined to shut the window and move on rather than wade through text.

As with past versions, Quicken Deluxe 2010 pulls in financial data from your banks and savings accounts. There are tools to create graphs and reports to itemize spending and banking, and to plot transactions on a calendar. There's also a debt reduction planner and a tax-planning wizard. Quicken could use a few more online social Net links, too, such as an option to sync reminders to an online calendar.

Intuit isn't blind to consumers' changing expectations in management software, online or offline. Quicken 2010's refurbished look does help, and conservatives who feel more comfortable keeping monetary details stored locally on their PCs rather than encrypted in the cloud lose nothing by downloading a free trial. For strictly online users with only personal finances (not investments, property, or small businesses), Intuit offers a free, online version that's similar to Mint.com. Quicken Online has budgeting, tracking, and reminders, encryption, an iPhone component, and the added capability to prep the data for tax time, assuming you also use one of Intuit's TurboTax products.

If you've used Quicken before, you can import data from previous years. The same goes for anyone switching over from Microsoft Money. With Microsoft Money killed off (additional details), Quicken is the best desktop alternative.

Some tools, like the bill reminder, are still a tad clunky.

Service and support
Quicken support is unchanged from previous years. E-mail support is free, and Intuit promises to respond within a day. Chat help is also free and is available 24-7. Phone assistance is $24.95 per call. However, some support calls are free, such as if you're having problems installing the program or converting data from earlier Quicken versions.

Overall
Quicken Deluxe 2010 remains a useful, if not exciting, management app equipped with rich balancing and budgeting tools. As for the future of Quicken, Intuit's recent acquisition of flashy online finance manager Mint.com could spell the merging of Mint's online budgeting and reminder features. Mint's exciting visual style could also draw younger users to future versions of Quicken, assuming Intuit goes that route, making future versions of the classic, but dated, money manager truly fresh.

"This is no upgrade! Terrible product"

    April 14, 2014  |   By juliettarose

    Version: Quicken Deluxe 2014 R5

    Pros

    None compared to previous versions

    Cons

Everything is different. All my data is out of whack. Completely did away with simple budgeting. Not user friendly at all. Freezes and takes forever to populate fields and scroll.

"probs with focus; paste; search return; adjusting split"

    April 4, 2014  |   By OlyLady

    Version: Quicken Deluxe 2014 R5

    Pros

I have been a loyal Quicken user since 1994. I have always been more than satisfied with the product and use it heavily.

    Cons

Quicken 2014 has major problems which would cause me to switch after 20 years if only there was something to switch to! The five are: losing focus; pasting; search return; adjusting splits; and speed. I formerly copied a lot of payment and receipt data from emails. In this version, when you switch to another application and return to Quicken, it loses focus and you need to click back in the same field you were in formerly. Then only one paste will work per session. Whatever is the first thing copied to the Clipboard after opening Quicken is the only thing it will paste, no matter how many things you copy afterward. Third, after searching, it returns you to the top of your register -- every time, no matter where your focus was when the search began. Fourth, when you type a new amount in a split transaction, both the button to adjust and the button to cancel invoke the Cancel function. Finally, this version is simply Slow on everything from changing a transaction to reconciling.

"Quicken has sadly become a headache!"

    April 2, 2014  |   By hotrodgrandma19

    Version: Quicken Deluxe 2014 R5

    Pros

I like some of the new features. That's all.

    Cons

Too many to list. Let's just say, I agree with others comments. And that's sad. I've been a Quicken user for many years and stuck with Quicken 2012 because I heard 2013 was very problematic. Being forced to buy 2014, I upgraded, only to have to spend days getting it to a point of being usable. The customer service is laughable. I even had to tell a lady where to go within the program. All people I communicated with didn't know anything without trying to look it up. My online queries have been no help either. I just discovered another "bug", something that is not working. It's very frustrating! I don't know what's happened over the last few years, but it's very disappointing. And I'm also wondering if they will say, come next year, that we will need to upgrade again in order to continue to use some important features. If they do, to me, that would be like bribing users to continue to purchase, and I will not take their bait if they do. So, current users, keep this in mind.

    Summary

I'm sorry to say that I cannot and would not recommend this program to anyone. It's completely true to say, it is not user friendly. I'm very computer savvy and it's not even user friendly for me simply because of all the bugs! New features mean nothing to a user if the program doesn't work properly! We shouldn't have to figure a "work around" to use it. You shouldn't present a product that is so-o-o-o buggy. Not from a company like Intuit. I don't even want to give it one star, but I will.

    Updated on Apr 2, 2014

I do have the latest Quicken 2014 update "fix", R7.

    "Buggy bloatware year-after-year"

    March 24, 2014  |   By NateOceanside

    Version: Quicken Deluxe 2014 R5

    Pros

Occasionally it downloads my accounts correctly. Some of the report colors are pretty. About once a decade taxes are correct. But there is good news: On Jan 1, 2000 I was worth $18,000,000! Quicken insists this was not a Y2K bug.

    Cons

Often fails to correctly connect. Numerous same old bugs year after year. Horribly over-complex for simple users. Basic version is Cripple-ware. In one case the very limited tech support person guided me through the procedure to re-construct my data. But she warned me not to do it _too_ often, as it might introduce additional errors. Sheesh.

    Summary

Massive bloat-ware suffering from extreme feature-itis. Quicken can't seem to justify a new release, so they artificially switch off the older releases and force you to "upgrade" every other year. Often the new version has a few trivial (and unnecessary) feature, but they never seem to fix the old bugs. This product is collapsing under it's own weight.

"Needs to be re-coded from the ground up"

    March 19, 2014  |   By JustStan

    Version: Quicken Deluxe 2014 R5

    Pros

Quicken 2014 has a lot of great features that, if they all worked as they should and the program got a much-needed user interface-lift, would make for a truly outstanding personal finance program... certainly better than anything else out there. But again, that's if it worked as it should and had a face-lift, neither of which are the case.

    Cons

It would take more than 1,000 characters to describe all the things in Quicken 2014 that just don't function as they are supposed to. My feeling is that this program was coded decades ago and, as they have continued to add features over the years, they have just thrown in new code here and there, over and over again, making a mess of the code and causing all kinds of unintended consequences. The result is a piece of software that is such a mess at this point that it is really beyond repair as it currently exists; it needs to be completely re-coded from the ground up. Intuit apparently doesn't care to make that investment.

    Summary

What amazes me, aside from what a mess this program is, are the "professional" reviews of the program. I have been unable to find a professional review that in any way reflects my experience with actually using the program. Somehow they review the features as they are intended to function, while failing to mention that they don't function as intended. One need only note the vast discrepancy between the reviews of people who actually use the software and those of the tech press to see what I mean. I can only assume that the professional reviewers don't use the software for anything more than a quick trial run.

Intuit needs to be called to task and clearly their user base is not getting through to them. I wish that someone with some clout in the tech press would actually attempt to use this software for a few months and then write an in depth article on it, including interviews with the powers that be at Intuit. Perhaps they could solve the mystery of how a reputable company could continue to put out such a faulty product.

"Intuit will sell you vers. 2013 instead if you want"

    March 18, 2014  |   By InstituteGrey

    Version: Quicken Deluxe 2014 R5

    Pros

I called Quicken and they admitted there are problems with version 2014. A tech guy took control of my computer and installed 2013 for me. It seemed to go well. I had to pay for it. This was only possible because I had not yet converted my files out of 2011. I will return 2014 to Staples.

    Cons

none that I know of in vers. 2013

    Summary

    Updated on Mar 18, 2014

I regret to say that I'm now not sure that the Quicken 2013 that I downloaded today was from a legitimate source. For now, until I learn more, I would like to withdraw what I said above.

    "The downward spiral continues..."

    March 14, 2014  |   By topamo

    Version: Quicken Deluxe 2014 R5

    Pros

Continuing to get downloads of stock and mutual; fund prices, if your current Quicken version is over three years old. That's it.

    Cons

Buggy. Buggy. Buggy. (Quick, Henry, the Flit!)

    Summary

I've had Quicken 2014, now release 7, for about a week. Budget reports don't don't capture all transactions and, worse yet, the numbers in the report don't add up. Subcategories appear in random places. Reports copied to Excel have goobered-up category identifications.

I've been using Quicken for 20 years, now, and am slack-jawed in amazement on how they could have put out this "upgraded" piece of crap. One would think that could get it right, at long last. Witness the power of the monopoly.

    "Don't even think about it"

    March 8, 2014  |   By Trico66

    Version: Quicken Deluxe 2014 R5

    Pros

Nothing! If I have to write 10 characters then I will write NOTHING! I HATE IT! I AM STUCK WITH IT! PLEASE FIND ME AN ALTERNATIVE AND SEND IT TO MY EMAIL porscheracr@gmail.com.

    Cons

I have been a loyal user of quicken for more than 10 years now, if not longer - upgrading every year. This last release has to be the worst one ever. This may be the worst piece of software I ever used.

Calendar entries that don't appear, loan payment options that disappear, payments scheduled to send that drop back to Scheduled only, screens that don't refresh after updating, loan screens that after update take minutes to stop spinning the hard drive maniacally for no apparent reason.

    Summary

This could be the worst software I ever used. I am thinking about going back to writing checks by hand for the first time in more than 10 years.

Will someone write a good software package so I can move over please??? I promise I will be loyal as long as your software works.

    Thanks

    March 7, 2014  |   By smith205

    Version: Quicken Deluxe 2014 R5

    Pros

None - cannot find anything that is acceptable about this product.

    Cons

No step by step instructions. Should be per advertising 15 seconds to do things NOT TRUE!!! Customer Service is a joke!!! After getting 6 incident #'s and calling for assistance I was disconnected 4 times!!! Very difficult to understand them and had to have them repeat things several times. When I finally got through they could not figure out what was wrong and after 1 1/2 hours on phone got disconnected. There is no one in the US you can call for help or to complain to. Finally requested a refund of my money and uninstalled the program!!!!!

    "So disappointed in Quicken"

    February 15, 2014  |   By MzMck

    Version: Quicken Deluxe 2014 R5

    Pros

As treasurer for a small non-profit, the previous treasurer was using Quicken Home & Small Business 2007. I upgraded to 2012 in order to do online upgrades. Boy, have I been disappointed.

Easy to write checks and reconcile checkbook, but . . .

    Cons

I have struggled for two years, recently called in a so-called expert and paid for her to tell me she had no clue why Quicken was not properly reporting our investments when the data was all there. All I've been hearing lately is that Quicken is "not user-friendly," an understatement if ever there was one.

Quicken online support is abysmal to non-existent. Printed manual is incomplete and poorly organized. Quicken 2012 has an address book that is potentially very useful, but there is no way to search for individual names, the user must scroll through a couple hundred names. Once the name is found and edited, the address book returns to the top of the list on "Save" and you must start all over again.

We are a non-profit and do not generate invoices, but we do generate receipts for donations and I haven't a clue how to integrate that into Quicken's logic.

    Summary

I thought it was my own ineptitude that was causing all the problems; wish I had come to this site much earlier. I used Quicken back in the old MS-DOS days and loved it. Seems Intuit has done nothing but go downhill.

Quicken promises tracking and reporting all financial data, including investments, in one place, but the reports for investments don't display the underlying data. The consultant we paid suggested tracking and reporting in Excel, but in the interests of simplification for my successor, I wanted to keep everything in Quicken. Theoretically, it should be possible, and Quicken promises to do that. Hah!! Now I need to go searching online for a program that will do what it says. If anyone here has suggestions, I would be so glad to hear them.
