With Quicken 2010, Intuit strives to make its flagship money management application easier to navigate and simpler to set up, thanks to spruced-up visuals and a refreshed start-up wizard. Although already a solid balance-keeper and financial assistant in previous versions, Quicken 2010 adds a few new features to visualize your monthly budget and assets.

The Quicken 2010 product family includes Quicken Starter Edition ($29.99) for tracking budgets and upcoming bills; Quicken Deluxe ($59.99), which includes tools to help you save up for a large purchase; Quicken Premier ($89.99), which helps track investments; Quicken Home and Business ($99.99); and Quicken Rental Property Management ($149.99). We evaluated Quicken Deluxe 2010.

Installation

At almost 70MB, Quicken Deluxe 2010 takes several minutes to install. Installation was painless up to the point when the software junked up our desktop with four icons: the Quicken icon, plus another three unwanted shortcuts advertising a Quicken credit card and other additional services.

Features

Quicken's core features continue doing what they've done for years: chiefly, importing your financial information to help you automatically and manually track your spending and savings. Not just a simple ledger for balancing your bank book, Quicken's additional tools also help alert you to upcoming bills and to your overall budget.

The Quicken 2010 product line gets a prettied-up interface that provides an at-a-glance summary of your finances.

In the 2010 edition, Intuit has applied some cosmetic changes that streamline and simplify the software. One change is a sleeker setup wizard to guide you through the process of importing your financial information, adding bill reminders, and setting up budgets. This wizard is moot if you're a returning user importing years of data from past Quicken versions, but new users will have an easier time getting started with this version than in years past.

A cleaner-looking home screen greets new and returning users, summarizing your financial standing in a glance. Pared-down navigation options also make it easier to find what you need. The most active new feature in Quicken 2010 takes a stab at automatically categorizing your transactions, like assigning Safeway to the Groceries category and your doctor's visits to the Medical category, with a little help from you if there's any doubt. In implementing this feature, Quicken plays catch-up to savvier online management apps, like Mint.com--which Intuit has since snapped up and plans to integrate--and its ilk. A new infographic in Quicken also helps you avoid late fees by displaying both how much cash is left in your coffers and which upcoming bills you should brace for.

Apart from the bill reminder and the autocategorization, it's Quicken's top layer, and select tools, that see the benefit of Quicken's design changes. Scratch the surface, however, and many of the app's second-tier tools--text-heavy calculators, planners, and lists with tiny font--feel as if they haven't been updated for years. The old-school layout may not bother legacy users or those who aren't put off by blocks of texts and charts, but others who have come to expect graphic representation of their data and clean design--say, the likes of former competitor Mint.com--may be inclined to shut the window and move on rather than wade through text.

As with past versions, Quicken Deluxe 2010 pulls in financial data from your banks and savings accounts. There are tools to create graphs and reports to itemize spending and banking, and to plot transactions on a calendar. There's also a debt reduction planner and a tax-planning wizard. Quicken could use a few more online social Net links, too, such as an option to sync reminders to an online calendar.

Intuit isn't blind to consumers' changing expectations in management software, online or offline. Quicken 2010's refurbished look does help, and conservatives who feel more comfortable keeping monetary details stored locally on their PCs rather than encrypted in the cloud lose nothing by downloading a free trial. For strictly online users with only personal finances (not investments, property, or small businesses), Intuit offers a free, online version that's similar to Mint.com. Quicken Online has budgeting, tracking, and reminders, encryption, an iPhone component, and the added capability to prep the data for tax time, assuming you also use one of Intuit's TurboTax products.

If you've used Quicken before, you can import data from previous years. The same goes for anyone switching over from Microsoft Money. With Microsoft Money killed off (additional details), Quicken is the best desktop alternative.

Some tools, like the bill reminder, are still a tad clunky.

Service and support
Quicken support is unchanged from previous years. E-mail support is free, and Intuit promises to respond within a day. Chat help is also free and is available 24-7. Phone assistance is $24.95 per call. However, some support calls are free, such as if you're having problems installing the program or converting data from earlier Quicken versions.

Overall
Quicken Deluxe 2010 remains a useful, if not exciting, management app equipped with rich balancing and budgeting tools. As for the future of Quicken, Intuit's recent acquisition of flashy online finance manager Mint.com could spell the merging of Mint's online budgeting and reminder features. Mint's exciting visual style could also draw younger users to future versions of Quicken, assuming Intuit goes that route, making future versions of the classic, but dated, money manager truly fresh.

"Quicken mobile...yet another bug - Jan 2014!"

January 04, 2014  |  By RonVBT

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

Would be a great thing if Quicken could get the bugs out of it!

Cons

Quicken has not figured out mobile computing yet. Sync problem galore! Customer service asked me when I started having problems with split transactions being doubled on the mobile app. I said, "It's hard to say. I noticed a discrepancy in my ending balance a month ago but I had to fix the sync problem first before I could troubleshoot the balance error problem!"

Summary

Customer service at Quicken is a joke. Peopla are asking all over the forums, "How do I get a hold of Quicken?" The only options are, email or online chat. Quicken does not respond to email and online chat will be with people who do not write in English very well. I have spent over 4 hours with online chat in the last two days to no avail. They have reps that have problems writing in English especially the use of definite and indefinite articles like "A" and "The." The customer service reps have a checklist they want you to go through that involves unlinking your desktop from the cloud, validating the data file, relinking the desktop account to the cloud and then when that doesn't work they want you to uninstall the mobile app and reinstall it. After that, they just BS you until finally disconnecting the chat. I still give it 3 stars because it has potential...but Quicken needs to fix the mobile app ASAP!

"Terrible product; even worse service"

January 03, 2014  |  By eduardojuan2

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

Has a lot of features, but...

Cons

I can't imagine why the editors review says: "Service and support
Quicken support is unchanged from previous years. E-mail support is free, and Intuit promises to respond within a day. Chat help is also free and is available 24-7."

This is just not true. My 2013 version stopped downloading transactions from any source 2 weeks after I purchased it and for months I have tried to get Quicken to respond to no avail. Their on-line instructions do not work.

I am disappointed not only in Intuit for their bad product and support, but in CNet for misguiding people.

Summary

Bad service from Intuit for Quicken also means I will switch income tax software this year. No more Turbo Tax.

"I don't think it is so bad."

December 17, 2013  |  By sail4evr

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

Does everything it is supposed to do. It has never crashed on me. It makes lots of backups. I have to admit I have never tried to load a backup as it has never lost my data. I should say that I started with Microsoft Money version 1 probably in the 90's. I can't remember that far back. I was really pissed when MS stopped selling MS Money and I had to convert to Quicken. So I have been using Quicken from version 1. I might also add that I have worked as a full-charge bookkeeper and I did accounting for small business users (not with QuickBooks of course)including converting paper acct systems to computer.

Cons

Once every 6 months or so I find a download error of a missing value in Quicken that was in my credit card or banking account. I have discovered the missing item when doing my reconciliation. I admit to finding this very annoying and that is my main reason for chopping it to 4 stars.

Summary

I use it for home use, light business use and rental property tracking income and expenses. I have thought about QuickBooks, I have used it in the past, but converting everything into QuickBooks is just way too onerous. I don't do sales tax, billing, payroll or any of the really serious business issues requiring a more sophisticated accounting system.

"Quicken 2013 crashes too often"

November 16, 2013  |  By fenducchi

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

Easy to send and receive transactions online

Cons

Crashes too often.
Upgrades tend to be minor and not worth the cost
Quicken 2014 has not improved.

Summary

If the last three upgrades to Quicken did not crash so often, I would rate this program higher.
Because it's so unstable, I'm looking for better financial software.
Unfortunately, I have found no other financial program that so well sends and receives financial transactions online.

"Rip Off - again and again"

July 24, 2013  |  By prowalt

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

A prettier version of Excel.

Cons

I have hundreds of cons, but suffice to say that the previous reviewers have covered them pretty accurately. Things one needs are not there. Bloatware is all over the place. It feels as if it was written by has-been's who no longer care and who just need to punch the clock so they throw in all type of junk and nothing of substance.
Are there any companies out there that can do finance software right? Accountants must love it since it leaves people no choice but to go back to accountants after trying this mess.
So save yourself some money. Gather your receipts, put your tail between your legs, and go back to your accountant.

Summary

There should be a law against publishing this type of nonsense. Save your money.

"HORRIBLE!!"

July 22, 2013  |  By jrjohnson55082

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

Can't think of any.

Cons

After years of using Quicken we were forced to upgrade because our old version wasn't supported by Quicken anymore. Quicken 2013 is terrible. All it can do right is very basic transaction entry. I could do that with Excel. Checks don't always print correctly and after a couple of successful syncs with my banks it hasn't been able to connect to them in months. Forget calling tech support. If they hang up on you consider yourself lucky because you will barely be able to understand them and they will waste a lot of your time without solving any problems.

Summary

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! It doesn't work and you will waste a lot of precious time, swear at people around you and break things trying to get it to function.

"Buggiest version I have used or any software EVER."

June 30, 2013  |  By iallen

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

Can keep track of entries if it doesn't crash and lose months of entries. Backup is at least reliable.

Cons

Just lost two months of entries in my active file. Had to resort to 3 week old backup. Does not record dividends automatically for holdings. Only downloads current price so no way of seeing what your actually investment account looks like. CRASHES every time I open it. Sometimes multiple times. Gets worse with each update. I have had to open an old file to recover my data for the send time in less than 6 months.

Summary

Used to use Quicken until the company did quirky things like forget you balanced an account and I had to do as many as 6 months over again. Went to MS Money until it was no longer sold and now am unfortunately back to Quicken. I don't like giving my login information for my bank to another service otherwise might consider Mint. But I can honestly say that this is the worst product being SOLD. I have seen better results from free software. Maybe it's the translation from whatever language to English that's causing the problem.

"I never buy from Intuit again"

May 16, 2013  |  By ualtyrone

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

Same software I paid for and have been using for years. The icons have only slightly changed in appearance.

Cons

-Both the old and new software are no longer able to connect with my financial institutions and download data.
-Did not come with instructions on how to restore functionality--back to the internet to find out how to make it work!

Summary

On-line banking has made it difficult to sell Quicken to new customers. Intut's answer; make existing customers buy it again! When other software makers improve their software, they eventually stop supporting previous versions. Intuit used to do the same thing. Quicken was a great product, and it already did what most of its existing users wanted. So they made our existing software stop working, gave it a makeover, and are now selling it to their existing customers again! Fool me once, shame on me. . . . This is the last time I buy anything from Intuit.

"Will be my last Quicken Product"

May 15, 2013  |  By gryphontk

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

None None None

Cons

Was happy with 2010, only upgraded because I would no longer be able to download bank data. After installing Quicken 2013, I can no longer download data from any bank. After spending over an hour on the chat line, submitting my log files etc, I was told I would hear back in 24 hours. After 2 days I call, talk to someone, and am told the problem is with my bank, not with Quicken. I would but that if it was only one bank. Quicken / intuit does not care. Lousy customer service

Summary

Very bloated product with features that I will never use, and the one that I want to use does not work. Very poor customer support.

"My Last Intuit Product"

May 13, 2013  |  By Fishstyx

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

There were NO pros unless you count hours of wasted time and data loss a "pro"

Cons

After being forced to upgrade to 2013 ($100), the file conversion process failed, corrupting my main data file. It would run forever until the new file use all available disk space. Customer support had me open my backups (which it also corrupted). Fortunately I had backups of the backups and I was able to reinstall 2010, export my key data and forget Intuit after 20 YEARS!. Customer support was some Indian reading from a script who declared (thick Indian accent) "We've tried everything and clearly there is nothing wrong with Quicken. I suggest you start a new data file".

Summary

After 20 years of watching Quicken bloat, get less stable and less supported, a failed conversion to 2013 is the last straw.
