"Quicken Essentials for Mac is a joke"

    March 23, 2010  |   By targus_angle

    Version: Quicken 2015 2010

    Pros

    100% money back guarantee

    Cons

This Product is so striped down. You would would be more productive using sticky notes, an adding machine and two pencils with erasers.

    Summary

Stay with Quicken 2007 or 2006, quicken essentials for mac is a joke. This is the first Quicken product that I invoked the 100% satisfaction guarantee and I received a full refund for QEM. Since I downloaded the product I did have any shipping charges to return QEM. I have used Quicken since the early 90's (before that I uses a product called "Dollars & Sense" by Monogram, which I thought was a very good program.)

Quicken Essentials for Mac is Intuit's version of Ford's; Edsel or Coke's; New Coke.

    Updated on Oct 25, 2012

Correction: I bought and returned QE in February 2010, I upgrade from iBank 3 to iBank 4 in June 2011.

"It is clumsy and will not print checks"

    March 21, 2010  |   By nimble1

    Version: Quicken 2015 2010

    Pros

I was able to transfer my data over after getting some fairly technical help.

    Cons

Does not perform the functions you would expect. Bank downloads are hard to set up. You cannot print checks and navigating the program is clumsy at best. http://quicken.intuit.com/support/articles/using-quicken/printing/7661.html

    Summary

I will keep this until I find a replacement product.

"Doesn't even come close to Quicken 2010"

    March 17, 2010  |   By jfsmith1222

    Version: Quicken 2015 2010

    Pros

User interface; ease of import from Quicken 2010 for Windows

    Cons

no support for online billpay; no support for online backup; no method for tracking investment transactions

    Summary

Quicken says they offer a 60 day money back guarantee. We'll see if they really mean it because I definitely want my money back. I'll continue to use Quicken 2010 on my Windows Laptop, but the Mac version needs a lot added to it to make it useful.

    Summary

I wish I could get my money back

"Good if its your needs are minimal."

    March 15, 2010  |   By WRod59

    Version: Quicken 2015 2010

    Pros

    - Easy import from Quicken 2007 for the Mac to Essencials
    - User Interface improvement
    - All my online account imported fine.
    - Native Mac App

    Cons

-No way to export/import from any iphone apps.

    Summary

I liked essentials because I don't get too fancy with my finances, but I do like the ability to export my checking account to my iphone, enter transaction when I'm not at home and sync with my desktop on the weekends. I used Quicken 2007 and Pocket Money Combo. Essentials does not export or import QIF files anymore so I have no way of syncing with pocket money anymore. I wouldn't even mind if I had to use another iphone app to do this but I have found no way of being able to do before. I had to go back to Quicken 2007, tried iBank but I had issues with online financial institutions. Please Quicken come out with Pocket Quicken for the iPhone.

"Good basic functionality, but needs improvement"

    March 14, 2010  |   By clancelotta

    Version: Quicken 2015 2010

    Pros

    - imported quicken 2007 data without problems
    - good look
    - helpful charts
    - backup to mobile-me
    - I like the new reconcile methodology, especially comared to the competition and the 2007 version.

    Cons

    - steep learning curve
    - mishandles categories and subcategory spending tallies
    - no on-the-fly entries ('new entry' first)
    - scheduled transactions appear in register (toggle off?)
    - will not maintain a running balance unless you sort by date.

    Summary

In my transition to QE, I was also initally frustrated with the software. I was so frustrated, in fact that I decided to switch to another MAC program and downloaded Moneydance and then iBank and began to use them all simultaneously for 2 weeks. Ultimately, I returned to QE, which I found much more acceptable once I learned how to use it and customize the appearance. I'm still learning the program, but I do like the UI better than the others, and QE met my limited needs.

With the above in mind, I do my banking a bit differently than perhaps many of the other reviewers. I do not create extensive budgets (although I have interest in that moving forward), and I do not rely on downloading transactions to populate my fields. I enter everything by hand and then (while reconciling) compare it with my bank's online register.
I also use subcategories fairly extensively to track spending on everything (ie. Household: yard & garden, Household: cleaning supplies, or Utilities: gas, Utilities: electric, etc). Quicken tracks this fairly well, with the caveat that, once you delve into subcategories, everything must be subcategorized for the program to track it. For example, once I established subcategories for the Utilities category, you must designate all Utility entries into a subcategory. You cannot leave an entry with just the category Utilities anymore, or the spening tracker will not not track it.
I also do not have quicken handle my investments, so that is functionality that I do not miss (although I would like to have it available).

So, in short, I find this program to be acceptible for my limited use. Essentially an electronic checkbook register with some neat scheduling and reporting functions. I would certainly like to do more
with this software, and I hope Intuit will move quickly with producing a more vibrant package for the growing number of MAC users.

    "Many problems, crashes frequently......terrible product"

    March 14, 2010  |   By wilson3232

    Version: Quicken 2015 2010

    Pros

Graphics and layout look nice. Easy to navigate. Easy to set up accounts with your banks online banking.

    Cons

Program crashes 3 out of 5 times I try to use it. I have problems matching up the downloaded transactions with the manual transactions I enter. Budget could have been easier to set up. A LONG way from being as useful as the PC version of Quicken.

    Summary

Bottom line: a very frustrating product. This is the only Mac software i have ever owned that crashes. I am hoping Intuit will release an update in the next couple of weeks. If not, I am sorry to say I am going to exercise my 60 Day Money Back Guarantee.

    "Terrible Product, Terrible Review"

    March 13, 2010  |   By 49erPress

    Version: Quicken 2015 2010

    Pros

    They spelled "Quicken" correctly.

    Cons

    1) Cannot do a year-to-date budget
    2) Can only do monthly budgets/tracking
    3) Reports transfers as expenditures
    4) Can't track expenses in subcategories to their assigned category
    5) Zero customer service

    Summary

It is clear the reviewer has not actually used Quicken Essentials for Mac, or hasn't used it for more than half-an-hour. All the information contained in the article can be found in other online sources or in the documentation provided by Intuit. I could have written this review before installing the program on my computer.

Unfortunately, I actually paid $70 for Quicken Essentials for Mac and tried to use it. The missing or incomplete functions are glaring. Quicken Essentials for Mac has been the worst experience I have had with a program, especially one which retails for $70.

If you are reading this, please save your money and your time. If you are CNET.com, please be sure your writers are actually attempting to use the products they are reviewing.

"Less functionality then older 2007 version."

    March 11, 2010  |   By richardneilson

    Version: Quicken 2015 2010

    Pros

    Pretty graphics. Written for OSX

    Cons

Investment tools are far better in the older version.

    Summary

After all the promises of a new version year after year, all you get is glitter. No meat and potatoes. After three years of being on the drawing board, this is somewhat of a disappointment. When a version becomes available that is at least equal or better then the 2007 version in functionality then kudos will be considered. Hope to see it in the next version.

"still several years behind Windows version"

    March 10, 2010  |   By gledieu

    Version: Quicken 2015 2010

    Pros

    Does the expected basics

    Cons

Why are Mac and Windows versions not on par for the offered functionality?

    Summary

If having the choice between Windows and Mac versions, Windows is to prefer. More bang for the buck
