    "Terrible Product, Terrible Review"

    March 13, 2010  |   By 49erPress

    Version: Quicken 2015 2010

    Pros

    They spelled "Quicken" correctly.

    Cons

    1) Cannot do a year-to-date budget
    2) Can only do monthly budgets/tracking
    3) Reports transfers as expenditures
    4) Can't track expenses in subcategories to their assigned category
    5) Zero customer service

    Summary

    It is clear the reviewer has not actually used Quicken Essentials for Mac, or hasn't used it for more than half-an-hour. All the information contained in the article can be found in other online sources or in the documentation provided by Intuit. I could have written this review before installing the program on my computer.

    Unfortunately, I actually paid $70 for Quicken Essentials for Mac and tried to use it. The missing or incomplete functions are glaring. Quicken Essentials for Mac has been the worst experience I have had with a program, especially one which retails for $70.

    If you are reading this, please save your money and your time. If you are CNET.com, please be sure your writers are actually attempting to use the products they are reviewing.

    "Less functionality then older 2007 version."

    March 11, 2010  |   By richardneilson

    Version: Quicken 2015 2010

    Pros

    Pretty graphics. Written for OSX

    Cons

    Investment tools are far better in the older version.

    Summary

    After all the promises of a new version year after year, all you get is glitter. No meat and potatoes. After three years of being on the drawing board, this is somewhat of a disappointment. When a version becomes available that is at least equal or better then the 2007 version in functionality then kudos will be considered. Hope to see it in the next version.

    "still several years behind Windows version"

    March 10, 2010  |   By gledieu

    Version: Quicken 2015 2010

    Pros

    Does the expected basics

    Cons

    Why are Mac and Windows versions not on par for the offered functionality?

    Summary

    If having the choice between Windows and Mac versions, Windows is to prefer. More bang for the buck

    "doesn't try to do it all, and I like that"

    March 9, 2010  |   By joesnow

    Version: Quicken 2015 2010

    Pros

    I have used Quicken for over a decade, but really never used the bloat of the home inventory, record location manager, living will creator, pet insurance policy minder, and dental appointment automator (some of that I made up)

    Cons

    when I downloaded my credit card updated transactions, some accounts did not recognize the prior account, and forced making a new account. So now I have AmExp Blue and AmExp New Blue. The info is all there, but bizarre in that it is in two accounts

    Summary

    If you really just want a program that manages your day to day finances, check book and credit cards, this is perfect. I do not miss the investment tracking, because that is already done wonderfully for me by my brokerage account (Fidelity, but I'm sure they all do it as well). I found I never really used any of the other tabs than the banking tab, with once a year going to Reports tab to print out a tax report. As far as import to Turbo Tax, I'll never miss that either. I did a TurboTax import, but unless you are perfectly diligent about entering every detail into Quicken, you are going to double check all those entries manually anyway.
    I have three children in the Young, Fabulous, and Broke decade of life (tip of hat to Suze Orman for that term), and they all are getting a copy of Quicken Essentials from Dad, as well as a copy of Suze's book. And they should all have Mint.com on their iPhones as well!

    "Doesn't handle investments. That says it all."

    March 9, 2010  |   By jhills

    Version: Quicken 2015 2010

    Pros

    None I can tell

    Cons

    no investment history

    Summary

    Don't buy this if you have more than a checkbook to handle. Real short

    "DON'T BUY THIS!!!!!!"

    March 9, 2010  |   By harryvv

    Version: Quicken 2015 2010

    Pros

    It was easy to get my money back from Quicken. It's got a nice look and sync's with banks okay

    Cons

    It does not track your investments so if you do that you have to continue using Quicken 2007. They no longer have family and home inventory.

    Summary

    After all this waiting for an update to Quicken 2007 Quicken Essentials is a waste of time. I cannot believe that Intuit put this product out. Check out Money Dance or iBank. It's time to leave Quicken for Mac in the dust bin.

    "Gorgeous UI but missing basics. Overpriced v. mint.com."

    March 9, 2010  |   By Freeheeler

    Version: Quicken 2015 2010

    Pros

    Gorgeous, mint.com-like interface (esp. compared to Quicken for Mac 2007). Very stable (no crashes before I returned it). Directly connects to financial institutions to auto-download transactions that Quicken for Mac 2007 (or mint.com) could not.

    Cons

    A complete shock to realize after a few hours of loading transactions and setting up an annual budget that there is NO way to get report spending year-to-date against your budget (by category or tag). mint.com has limited budgeting, but it's free.

    Summary

    Returned the product within hours of hair-pulling trying to find ways around the products's basic budgeting limitations. In my case, this was the deal-breaker, not the many other limitations others have illuminated. Been a frustrated Quicken for Mac 2007 user for several years now (mainly due to poor ease-of-use and frequent crashes); and it was shocking to see the only company with a credible Mac finance application take 3+ years to dumb down their only product for Mac users to the point that it's pretty much unusable for family finances.

    While mint.com has it own dumbed-down budgeting features (and in my case can't auto-download transactions from as many financial institutions), at least the price is right (free). I'm praying that Intuit will now focus on making mint.com a more feature-rich, robust web-based service, and not pour any more resources down their Quicken for Mac Essentials rabbit-hole.

    In their defense, Intuit was very good about a "no questions asked" refund, and I received a credit within a couple days.. However, I would strongly recommend using their call-back service for your refund. I tried several chat sessions initially, and had to abandon them after over an hour (each) when no reps would respond.

    *Heavy Sigh*

    "What was Quicken thinking?"

    March 8, 2010  |   By sabourland

    Version: Quicken 2015 2010

    Pros

    Excellent organization of data for analysis and managing future transaction, both by individual account and in overviews and reports.

    Cons

    1. Inaccurate and incomplete transfer of data from Qucken for Mac 2007;
    2. No capability to print a check;
    3. No capability to find and replace;
    4. No capability to automatically backup;
    [To be continued]

    Summary

    5. No capability to view detail in splits transaction collectively;
    6. No capability to edit split transactions as a batch;
    7. Clumsy handling of transfer by adding a category requirement for transfers;
    8. Changes to existing data does not prompt any warning and can be universal, thanks to a little default box that will "Change all . . ." if you do not uncheck it, after entering data into a previously posted entry.

    I could go on and on.

    After three attempts, starting over with the installation of date from Quicken for Mac 2007, Quicken Essentials 2010 did not once transfer any transfers, duplicating them ad nauseam in each affected account. Quicken solution is "simply identify the orphaned transfers and delete the duplicates."

    After ten years of record keeping with Quicken, this meant I had to review thousands and thousands of entries one by one, because in Quicken Essentials, you cannot batch review split transactions. Even worse, you cannot batch edit them. So each of the missing transfers is a one transaction at a time ordeal.

    The software is impressive in its organization and options for managing cash flow. If I was starting fresh, I could eliminate many of the problems I have faced with importing data from my earlier Quicken software. However, the ease with which transaction can be inadvertently altered is an accountant's nightmare. Even though, one may undo an edit, you must realize that the mistake has been made. With this software, you better not make any errors in entry. Why Quicken removed the default feature for warning when a posted entry is about to be changed is simply beyond comprehension. In fact, why they have deleted so many features is inexplicable.

    Quicken Essentials could be an outstanding accounting software. Unfortunately, this release should was not ready for prime time. Neither is Quicken's outsourced support, which is simply put incompetent and tends heavily towards a blame-the-customer-first mentality. After all, they make the world's finest software.

    I am terribly disappointed.

    "I haven't loaded it yet and ready to send it back"

    March 7, 2010  |   By dlhbj

    Version: Quicken 2015 2010

    Pros

    I can't since the product won't even convert my investment data.

    Cons

    For a year and 1/2 we waited for the MAC Quicken software program to be a virtual program almost compatible with Quicken for Windows. It doesn't even come close.

    Summary

    I'm going to be returning my new MAC software for a refund instead of wasting my time.

    I can't tell you how disappointed I was after reading the installation notes telling me my 15 years of investment data won't rollover into the new MAC Quicken (Essentials). I suppose if you are a brand new user it won't matter, but for those of us that have relied on Quicken for Windows, it's a waste of time and your money.

    I love my MAC but Intuit's Quicken Essentials is a joke. One reviewer said he thought it was a free trial download. Maybe Intuit was hoping to hold onto everyone's order just to get interest on our money until we returned the software. If that was their goal, I'm not amused and I'm certainly not happy about their hype that this would be the version that equated to the Windows version.

    I recommend Intuit stop the Quicken for MAC application software project if they can't do better than this.

    "Quicken Lite or Quicken Junior"

    March 6, 2010  |   By HeartlandBob

    Version: Quicken 2015 2010

    Pros

    Looks Mac like.

    Cons

    This a serious step down from the PC version. The lack of Investment Detail and Multiple Currency support (it does not allow for exchange rates in transfers, e.g. 1 GBP = 1USD, with no ability to change this) make this the junior version.

    Summary

    If your needs are anything beyond the most basic, I would think twice before switching. In addition to the serious limitations with Investments and Foreign Exchange, losing saved reports when moving from the PC version is a real slap in the face.
    BTW - though their website claims chat support 24/7 this did not prove true: I waited twice through a 20 minute wait time and then had my request canceled without explanation. This appears to be a false claim.
