• No glitz, just does what it is supposed to, quickly

  Searches hidden files(even Temporary Internet Files), Fast. Doesn't use resources when it is not being used by creating a constantly running startup program. Don't forget wildcards(*) when you use it.

  Cons

  None to speak of. It is is not as glitzy as the other products but does a better job of finding files

  Summary

  Developers who spend time writing code that does what it is designed to do well and worries less about look and feel, are on my A list. This is one of them.

  Pros

  This is a great tool for searching for text directly in files in directories on your computer. It is very fast and accurate. It is very easy to use as well.

  Cons

  I was unable to search the contents of a remote user's computer. Searching on a network server worked though.

  I've used this freeware program for 3-4 years. I don't use it much, but when I need to find certain text strings in hundreds of php files, this is the best. Go to the folder you need to search, right click the folder name, and select QuickSearcher.

  Cons

  Yes, it would be slow if you search the entire C: drive, but who does that? The full featured version that AKS-Labs sells (File Search Assistant) is $70 - too much in my opinion unless you specifically need the extra features, which I don't.

  Summary

  Even with the new XP 4.0 searcher, I still use QuickSearcher. Sometimes Microsoft just doesn't get it. No-frills results is better than slick-looking mediocrity.

  It's free. <p>It's quick and accurate if you don't search within ZIP files...

  Cons

  I wanted it because it could search for files within ZIP archives, but it takes FOREVER!! Plus, even though I specify an extension, it still gives me a bunch of other types of files. It also seems to take a lot of memory. I couldn't finish my search (it's been over 2 hours since it began) so I couldn't try extracting directly from the program or printing or exporting my result list to a spreadsheet.

  Pros

  Text search looks in all documents (even html and php) for search term. It displays results and even highlights the text you searched for within the document! I recommend it for programmers and web designers. Also, the program loads much faster than Windows' default search.

  Cons

  The filename search could be better. Unless you surround your keyword with *, it searches for filenames that are strictly named that keyword.

  Like all of you know, since XP's optimised search feature excludes files of certain extensions, this tool is a blessing from god for Java developers like me. You can search inside Java, JSP, Zip, Jars, and almost all *.*. Case sensitive searches are also possible. You can right click on a directory and you can select Search by QuickSearcher, it will only search within selected directory. I LOVE IT!

  Since Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, decided that with the release of Windows XP people would no longer need to search the contents of files for a particular string, unless of course it was a Microsoft created file such as a DOC, an XLS or a TXT, this little gem gives XP users what all the older generation of PC users, still running Win 95, Win 98 or Win ME, have still got. I write software in Progress, which saves source code in files that end with a .W extension, and of course Windows XP does not consider this to be a valid extension for a text file, so refuses to search the contents of these files for the string I am looking for. Quicksearcher does exactly what you tell it to do - search the contents of files that end in .W, and if the string I specify appears within that file, include the file in the list. Perfect.
