"QII vs Chat Client"

January 06, 2005  |  By gmjm

 |  Version: Queer IRC Interface Beta 1

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
In short, QII is much less polished and offers far fewer features than Chat Client. I greatly applaud their efforts though.

Biggest Difference: Chat Client shows the user's photo, QII just shows a "P". Chat Client will even enlarge the photo.
Chat Client allows you to click on a name in the bio and it will automatically open up the person's profile in Gay.com. QII gives you a blank text box which you must type (copy/paste?) a user's name to see the profile.
QII only displays two lines of a person's bio (at the top), perhaps my font (the default!) is too large, but I saw no way to stretch the window (a typical Mac function) to see more lines. I prefer the bio to be on the bottom. General GUI standards dictate that the top should be for static info and data. I much prefer bios to be on the bottom or side.
Chat Client allows you to enter a full bio paragraph, QII allow just age, location, etc.
In QII, I saw no way to suppress the unnecessary date/time stamp or enter/leaving announcements. I do not know if I can add that to Chat Client, but I prefer not to see this. It is difficult to pick out the posted text from an endless string of So-and-so Entering, So-and-so Leaving, Someone Entering, Someone Leaving, etc.

After just 10 mins with QII, this is what I had noticed and was enough for me to end it to the trash. Although it is much better than running the gauntlet of Gay.com ads via a browser, QII pales to Chat Client in almost all features, functions and ease of use.

Good GUI is not based on luck, it is an ergonomic science based on physical needs and visual expectations, as well as a little art. QII developers need to put more thought into what can be done by the application to remove unnecessary tasks by the user, as well as how to present the data in a useful and organized manner. I am not so sure about XP users, but Apple users expect much better.

I did not experience any of the port problems described in previous comments.

"Not too bad for a beta"

For just the casual chatter like myself, I think Queer IRC, while not as polished as other clients out there, will still prove to be a useful addition to the my short-list of chat-clients. It is different (for me) but I mostly had no problems getting up and running with it in just a minute. The speed seems to be a bit lagging, but it doesn't freeze up or crash. I look forward to future releases. Great start!

Full Specifications

What's new in version Beta 1
This release consists primarily of bug fixes and enhancements to the existing functionalitay. Here are most of the updates, in no particular order:
  • "Only Join Primary Rooms" option was resetting to false whenever QII was reloaded.
  • Log files now have the room's pretty name (Quahog) rather than "#555".
  • Added "Private Window" item to Users menu.
  • Fixed ctrl
  • click ability for Macs. :D
  • Don't deselect currently selected name in a room's user list when someone joins or leaves the room.
  • Your username will now be prefixed by a space, rather than Gay.com's "
  • ".
  • Better Unicode support. Also supported in profile text.
  • '.'s in names are converted to '|'s by the Gay.com chat server (for no particular reason). The profile viewer now accounts for this.
  • Move profile viewer's progress bar to the profile viewer itself, and only show it when actually downloading data (ie not from local cache).
  • Added toggle to hide text in the Profile Viewer.
  • Added option to disable highlighting of tabs on new activity. (Have had instances of java crashing as a result of tab highlighting, with no other way to resolve the issue.)
  • Cleaner crashes with pretty error messages! Hooray!
  • Profile Viewer's enforcement of "one open at a time" is no longer a bad hack.
  • Wrap profile text at top of channel windows (sorta). Long infolines no longer push the close button off the screen.
  • QII can now automatically check for updates (this feature can be disabled in options)
  • Adult profiles no longer bring up an empty image when you can't view them. (They bring up the "no photo" image instead)
  • Progress bar for pass hash retrieval is now embedded in the setup dialog.
