"Tombstone for sale: Quark. May you rest in pieces."
Version: QuarkXPress 6.1
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I took the plunge and tried InDesign for 1 week. After 2 days I knew I could never go back to this bloated, boring, Xtension-dependent ($$$) application. Want drop shadows? Buy an Xtension. Want special effects, transparency, etc... (buy Photoshop). Want inpositioning? Buy another Xtension. Want a big fat headache? Buy Quark and some Tylenol. It is my own belief that the reason that Quark relies so heavily on third-party Xtensions to do what is built into InDesign is because it is a cash cow for them (they charge a truckload to developers for the SDKs). So why p.o. developers by including these features, that should have been incorporataed in 5.0 and higher? You don't.
I have told my print vendors that if you don't or won't support Indesign CS, I'll have to use new vendors. To my surprise, they all support it, and now prefer it. I wish for the day that Quark only supports the Windows platform. They simply shouldn't be allowed to develop anything for the Macintosh. They've lost that right with each and every release. -

Unresponsive "customer service" (that's if you can actually get someone to talk to - hopefully someone that speaks English) and BS registration has moved me on to inDesign.
See you later quark. Rot yourself to hell! -
