Fantasy games were among the very first computer games created, and the appeal of medieval adventuring has never died. Like its original predecessor, QuadQuest II explores this fantasy territory, this time with new locations and monsters to battle. However, we were no more impressed with this version than with the original.
To start, players assemble a squad of six adventurers, choosing race and class and distributing skill points among attributes such as strength, agility, and intelligence. After a quick stop to buy some medieval gear and load up on spells and potions, battles against monsters begin immediately. Once the beasties are slain and their bodies looted, players go back to the shop to buy more expensive weapons. All of this takes place on a very simple level. The characters themselves do not gain in strength or other attributes. Missile weapons have infinite ammunition, and items are infinitely durable.
The game's graphics use only 16 colors, and there is no animation for characters or pictures depicting items or weapons. An awkward interface makes matters worse for moving a character; the player has to click move on a panel, then click again on the destination. No keyboard shortcuts are available. On the whole, we think far more diverting fantasy games are on the market, and we find it difficult to recommend this game to any but the most dedicated fantasy fans.
