Puffin Web Browser is one of those rare alternative browsers that manages to understand what works well in Safari and yet enhance and build on that formula in many ways. While the integration of things like iCloud is not as deep and there are some other features missing, what Puffin brings to the table makes it a solid browser that enhances more than it takes away.
The basic design of Puffin is familiar. It looks a lot like Safari with the tabs on top of the menu instead of below. On the iPad this actually looks quite good and makes manipulating the tabs easier. What really sets Puffin apart, however, is the inclusion of a digital trackpad and gamepad along with the keyboard. While the digital keyboard button in the bottom corner simply pulls out Apple's onscreen keyboard, the mouse creates an onscreen pointer and a trackpad, perfect for things like forms or small buttons that are notoriously hard to tap with a finger. The gamepad is a nice touch, as well, for online or Flash-based games. The other big feature, of course, is Flash support. While Flash is becoming less prevalent online in favor of HTML5, Apple has never supported it and Puffin does.
Puffin Web Browser runs smoothly, offers numerous new features, and is a well-designed system that really takes Web browsing to a new level. While a paid version is needed to enjoy the Flash feature past the first two weeks, it is well worth it if you enjoy the added features this browser offers.
