"After 1 month you get an ad banner on your page"
I created my own personalised start page consisting of five tabbed pages of nothing but bookmarks widgets, which I could name, colour and arrange as I wished. The pages and the bookmarks opened fast.
Without any warning they put an ad banner across the top of my page after I had been using Protopage for a month. You could click on a cross to hide the ad but it was there again every time you opened the page. They wanted $2.49 a month for it to be removed completely.
It's a shame because I was very happy with Protopage and I had no prior knowledge that this would happen. I switched straight away to Marklet.com which is similar but rather colourless and all on one page.I've returned to using Protopage startpage. I've not found another site quite like it. You can create different tabbed pages on which you can group your stuff, it's easier to see a little on each page rather than having everything on one solitary long page that you have to scroll down. There's a choice of colours to select for tabs & categories, & the page background. The toolbar buttons can be hidden, so more of your pages show. I can order my links just as I want, & not by alphabet or most used. I was able to opt for my links to open in a new tab on my browser, which is preferable to having to right-click on them every time & select 'Open in new tab'. The contents of categories can be collapsed (hidden), not that I've wanted to do that yet.

As for the ad banner, I can put up with that. Once you've clicked on the cross it remains hidden as long as you keep your Protopage open. The only thing I am beginning to wonder is if the ads are targeted, but maybe that's just me being neurotic.
