If you've ever tried tracking down a process in Windows Task Manager, you know it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. Process Explorer makes the job a lot easier. This freeware utility displays running processes in an intuitive tree format that includes not only process names, but also program icons and other data, such as description, image, and processor time.
It also can identify the process for a given application window or look up a process name in Google--a handy way to spot spyware. Additional features offer detailed information on performance, DLLs, threads, handles, TCP/IP connections, security settings, and environments. Despite its lack of visual polish, Process Explorer is one of the best Task Manager replacements we've seen.
Publisher's description
From Sysinternals :Process Explorer is an advanced process management utility that picks up where Task Manager leaves off. It will show you detailed information about a process including its icon, command-line, full image path, memory statistics, user account, security attributes, and more. When you zoom in on a particular process you can list the DLLs it has loaded or the operating system resource handles it has open. A search capability enables you to track down a process that has a resource opened, such as a file, directory or Registry key, or to view the list of processes that have a DLL loaded.
The Process Explorer display consists of two sub-windows. The top always shows a list of the currently active processes, including the names of their owning accounts, whereas the information displayed in the bottom window, which you can close, depends on the mode that Process Explorer is in: if it is in handle mode you will see the handles that the process selected in the top window has opened; if Process Explorer is in DLL mode you will see the DLLs and memory-mapped files that the process has loaded.
Process Explorer does not require administrative privileges to run and works on Windows 9x/Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Server 2003, and 64-bit versions of Windows for x64 and IA64 processors, and Windows Vista.
Version 11 adds a new treelist control for better UI responsiveness, more flags on groups in security tab and SID display, a variety of additions for Windows Vista, and other tweaks and fixes. Version 11.04 is a maintenance release.

Version: Process Explorer 11.04
Pros: Everything you'd ever want to know about what your computer is doing.
Cons: This program can overwhelm someone with too much information. I would advise someone not to "play" with this tool unless they know what they're doing.

Version: Process Explorer 11.04
Pros: I've downloaded a lot of apps off of this site, and I've found a lot of good utilities.. but this one is a must have.
-Nonintrusive (no install at all, just execute the program, and watch it work)
-Small (1.5mb)
-I loved the features they had on the old version, the new version is improved and just... really awesome.
Cons: I've been using this series as a replacement for taskmanager for at least 6 months and I haven not came across anything bad.

Version: Process Explorer 11.04
Pros: This software rocks. Get detailed information about any and all of your process. You can look at all the threads, dlls, files opened by a process.
Apart from usual task manager stuff like memory footage and processor usage, you even get to see which process is using the internet behind your back.
Know services registered with a process. You can even permanently replace your task manager with this, so that when you press ctrl+alt+del, this comes up instead of task manager.
You can tell about the usefulness of this software from the fact that microsoft bought its parent company.
Cons: None i found.
