Version: PrimoPDF 4.0.1
"Works well for MOST situations"
Pros: Of course the best thing about it is that it's free, and that the simple interface via any application's printing capabilities really makes it a breeze to use. Clean PDF creation within most applications, and generally good, presentable output results.
Cons: Something of a slowish pig to load up; in terms of speed my Acrobat Pro installation isn't going to sweat bullets over PrimoPDF's speed. Once loaded, the actual PDF creation process is fast but there's not much more than the basics in the way of customization options, but you get what you pay for I suppose. Does require the addition of .NET 2.0 Framework if you don't have it installed already.
I've also found that certain Flash-scripted pages (such as with some sites' order summary pages that you get reported to the screen after an online purchase, for instance) seem to create resolution problems for PrimoPDF; great if you regularly like the quality of the classic Atari 2600's graphics, but as an digital archive file it's next to worthless at its worst, and marginally acceptable at its best. I get better-looking results sending some of these pages to the printer, then rescanning the hardcopy into PDF on my Canon scanner. Does seem to do better with IE (not my preferred choice of browser) than with FF but I found output resolution issues with both, even when no downsampling is allowed.
