"Recovered iPod files when nothing else would"

    November 25, 2005   |   By internettools

    Version: PodSalvage 4.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Worked like a charm, and didn't even need to read the 35 page User
    Manual.

A friend of mine had his iPod reset itself, and in doing so, lost all
the music on the iPod. And this was not just any music, but a
collection of 400 folk music songs lovingly collected from various
cassette tapes, albums and even 78's. In addition, each song had ten
seconds of silence at the end, to allow his folk music group time to
get ready for the next dance. The person who had created this
masterpiece had left town, and nobody had any backups.

When I plugged his iPod into my Tiger laptop with Itunes 6, it took
about 10 minutes for iTunes to recognize the iPod and report that
there was no music on it. I could feel the vibrations of the hard
disk as it kept trying to re-read sectors.

When I ran Disk Utility against his iPod, it gave me an drastic error
message and stopped. Diskwarrior would not recognize the iPod, as it
was created and formatted on a Windows machine.

So I used Version Tracker to see what was available. PodWorks is more
for copying songs, and it could not find the iPod. iPodrip saw the
drive one time, but then crashed. Subsequent attempts at starting up
iPodRip failed, with iPodRip crashing right away.

Then I tried PodSalvage from SubRosaSoft, and it found the iPod,
started scanning and came back with 400+ found songs. It was not able
to tell me any of the file names, but did show the size of each file.
When I tried the recovery step, it said I needed to ante up some
    money. Fair enough.

So I called my friend and he did not hestitate on coughing up $40 ($50
if you want them to send you a CD). After using their on-line store,
SubRosaSoft emailed me a serial number, which allowed me to recover
all the songs onto my Powerbook hard drive. The files all came with
their proper name attached, except for about 18 WAV files.

I then used iTunes to add them to a library, and everybody is happy.
I also made a couple of backup DVD's so we shouldn't need to go thru
    this process anymore.

    Thanks SubRosaSoft !!

    "ipod damaged after using podsalvage"

    May 21, 2005   |   By wolfgirl2

    Version: PodSalvage 3.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I am sorry to say, as enthousiastic as I was at first, I must now tell you sadly that what looked like a salvage has turned out a complete disaster.
First of all, after using Podsalvage, it created a folder with 4 subfolders in it. One with MP3files, which were okay and could be copied to I-tunes, the other songs, part of them purchasedf from I-tunes music store and part of them copied from my own cd's, appeared as MP4-files and can't be copied or imported to I-tunes.
So to see what would happen if I copied the original cd to I-tunes and then copy to the I-pod, I went ahead.
But my Ipod seems to be totally disrupted by using Podsalvage, the cd just doesn't appear on my Ipod, while it did show up on my Ipod in I-Tunes. So I am very very disappointed plus I am left with a disfunctional Ipod which probably can't be repaired.
As I paid 39,90 dollars for Podsalvage, I am sorry to say but I just can't give it a good review anymore.

    Disappointed

    Nikki

"WAY overpriced and may not help...."

    February 26, 2005   |   By JNAlldridge

    Version: PodSalvage 2.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I had the EXACT same situation happen as the previous reviewer: reformatted Mac, family member hooked up iPod, iPod auto-sync synced the fully-loaded iPod with nothing. Without doing anything to the iPod, it seemed this program was the only route, bought it for the OUTRAGEOUS price, it was able to recover songs but for some reason half the songs were gone, another half were doubled. The main thing I wanted was to recover my purchased iTunes. I was able to get most, but to get my music library back up I will have to re-rip each disc. It is not worth FORTY bucks and not knowing if your songs will be recovered fully.

    "Still Needs Some work"

    December 31, 2004   |   By Icewolf08

    Version: PodSalvage 2.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Well, i can't say that i have met with as much success as the previous reviewer, I had about 2000+ songs on my Pod, and i have no idea how they just went poof and disappeared. So far i have run podSalvage 2 times, neither time has it been able to recover all of my music, yet it gets different songs each time which leads me to believe that most of the music is salvageable. I do agree that the price tag for this little utility is very steep, especially because i hope that after i resurrect enough of my music i won't have to use it again. so i guess it is once more into the breach, as i run it for the third time to see what new i get. And yes, i have tried both modes.... The concept and interface are great, the effectiveness seems to need work.

    "Saved my songs"

    December 18, 2004   |   By ThisIsNo

    Version: PodSalvage 2.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Had to reinstall OS X, lost all of the music on my harddrive. It was all on my iPod, and I was waiting until I had some time to back it up and re-transfer it back to the computer. Roommate asked to use my computer, I didn't think about it, but the iPod was attached, and he opened up iTunes for the first time on the new install. So he probably just clicked 'yes' and 'agree' all the way through, associating the empty library with the iPod, and that was it. All songs gone. PodSalvage was extremely easy to use, and out of 4000 songs, only two were corrupted (may not have been PodSalvage's fault). The price was steep though, for something that I'm probably not going to use very often if ever again. Maybe there should be a reduced price (like $10 - $15) version that allows you to restore a single iPod. I think more people would take up that offer. There may be a cheaper, or free, way to restore an iPod, but I was in a hurry and PodSalvage worked extremely well.
