"Works Great - depending on your needs"

    February 16, 2015  |   By idontspeakmonkey

    Version: PlayOn 3.10.20

    Pros

Fills in the gaps from other streaming solutions

    Cons

Takes some decent hardware and patience to make it work well.

    Summary

    PLAYON / PLAYLATER REVIEW -
Think about what you need it for. It is not a one size fits all / replace everything you own solution. It fits some niches very well. For me the value is Hulu Basic Streaming and "Everything" Archiving for Timeshifted Viewing when traveling, or when my Tuners on my DVR are already busy.

    PLAYON
I've been using the Playon Software on/off for about 5+ years. I took an old 2008 AMD Laptop I had laying around and installed the (now discontinued) Playon BASIC. This was so that I could get Hulu Basic and Amazon Prime Streaming content to my DLNA Blu Ray Player / TV (Before Smart TV's were common and affordable) and an older DLNA WDLive streaming box that did not come with any of the now common apps. For this use it has always worked well.

    PLAYLATER
I recently looked at the Playon site and found out about Playlater. I travel all the time, and often internationally where I have very slow or expensive internet options. I ran an experiment before my recent trip to Brazil, and I put 4 seasons of shows on my $59 windows tablet and watched them on the 12 hour plane ride and also in the Hotel via the HDMI input common on most TV's.

    VALUE
I have canceled Hulu Plus (saving $8 / month), so this upgrade has already paid for itself in just 3 months. Plus I was able to return my spare "Travel" Chromecast for $35, and my last failed attempt at a decent travel Router $50 (just could never get it all to work together consistently). Once HBO Go is totally ala carte, I'll probably drop cable TV (again) and just use Playon / Playlater to stream or archive video from the web. Saving about $100 / month over Cable TV.

    SUPPORT:
I HAVE NEVER HAD BETTER SUPPORT FROM A SOFTWARE PROVIDER! My emails are answered quickly within hours and without the typical condensation found at other SW companies. They answer my questions directly no canned "Level 1" answers like ("have your tried rebooting").

    PROBLEMS:
Most of my problems were around trying to get Playlater to work on an 8 year old AMD laptop. Streaming worked perfectly fine in standard definition, but I could only get recording to work at the second to lowest setting. I just deployed a cheap i7 Quad Core, 2012 vintage laptop from ebay and now I can run Playon and PlayLater at maximum settings at the same time (while doing other work) and they work perfectly.

    SUMMARY:
I've tried and own several other streaming solutions and they all have their strength and weaknesses. So far no, one single device does everything I need. Playon helps to fill the gaps and shortcomings of the other solutions like (Roku, Chromecast, Amazon Fire, WDLive, DLNA, Build in Smart TV Apps)
The software gets better with every release. The Playlater Software shows real potential to be a commercial DVR software alternative when it grows up. For now all recordings are manual. There are no season passes or cross platform searches, but I assume it will get there sooner or later.
For me, having paid something like $40 total for 5+ years of use, I could not be happier.

"PlayLater is my primary method for watching TV"

    January 25, 2015  |   By RockFox

    Version: PlayOn 3.6.63

    Pros

I'd say most of the negative reviews here are outdated. As of 01/25/15 I do most of my TV watching via PlayLater 1.6 and PlayOn 3.10. I paid for a one-time lifetime license @ $69.99. My initial reaction was that the software was crap and I wanted a refund. Customer Support encouraged me to try it for the 14 days. After learning how it works I decided to keep it. I have seen lifetime licenses as low as $39.99 and I feel it is well worth it. A recent improvement is to allow watching PlayLater recorded shows and skip the commercials.

I am running 64-bit Windows 8.1 on an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-370 CPU @ 3.40 GHz and I use a wireless Roku 3 to display on my TV. If you are able to view shows full screen (like cbs.com) in your browser without interruptions then I'd say you have enough Internet speed to run PlayOn.

Of course you can't watch TV in real time. You have to wait until the provider makes the program available on their website which is usually a day or two.

    Cons

The default mode for recording is NOT HD. If you do not enable HD then the result is crap.

For some channels it is necessary to logon with your cable provider's userid and password. Do, don't expect to view HBO via PlayLater if you do not have an HBO subscription. This software is NOT the solution for cord-cutters.

    Summary

I'd recommend to a friend. But first go to the playon.com website and check out the minimum requirements.

"Not even worth half a star"

    October 6, 2014  |

    Version: PlayOn 3.6.63

    Pros

    none they rip you off

    Cons

you can get everything playon offers from xbmc and they work better

    Summary

when you try to cancel it takes you three or four emails just to cancel and if you so happen to have paid the $5 for the "free chromcast" they do not refund that. They claim it is for shipping but item was never shipped and all shipping companies refund you when item does not ship. So they just take your $5 and chalk it up to you being a sucker. So dont be like me, just save yourself the trouble and download xbmc.

"Buggy Interface and Slow Streams, Skip Playon."

    October 6, 2014  |   By garickm

    Version: PlayOn 3.6.63

    Pros

Slick Interface and that is about it.

    Cons

Content stutters constantly and is much better viewed on it's own direct from the source. Sure it's neat to have a Playon "guide", but the minute you save not having to navigate directly to the content provider is not worth having to deal with buffering / poor quality streams. They also limit content, so you benefit from visiting the content provider. Case in point, while trying to get some videos to entertain my toddler, Sprout featured 5 min clips via Playon while visiting the Sprout site allowed me to find full episodes. Even those 5 min clips failed to load while 25 min shows viewed directly on Sprout ran flawless, So it isn't a hardware issue. Also having to have a "Home" pc always on to be able to stream is clunky and the whole set up process is way more complicated than it needs to be.

    Summary

If you know how to book mark a few pages you can skip this and save your money with the added benefit of getting higher quality and more content. Wish I would have passed on this service.

    "WARNING WARNING WARNING"

    March 28, 2014  |   By bstrec

    Version: PlayOn 3.6.63

    Pros

Nothing good to say about this company

    Cons

This company does nothing but rip you off. If you read all the review, you will see all the negative reviews are form people who can't get a refund from this company this person also. I will never do business with any company who has Jeff Lawrence, MediaMall or Playon attached to it again. This company won't give you any other contact information other than an email address for customer support, and when you do find the email address for Mr. Lawrence, good luck getting a response from him. I had to file complaints with the BBB, Washington State Attorney's office, New York State Attorney's Office and my home state just to get this looser to replay. Then when he did all he wanted to do was blame someone else.

    STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY

    Summary

STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY (MediaMall, Playon, Jeff Lawrence) unless you want to be ripped off.

    "Save Your Money"

    February 11, 2014  |   By NapJeeper

    Version: PlayOn 3.6.63

    Pros

With the cost involved and poor customer service, I can find no pros to give to this software.

    Cons

If you buy anything from them, be prepared to KEEP buying. They offer things like "Lifetime" software so you can get all those new features as they come out, then when that feature comes out, you need to buy another license. It's a sham.

    Summary

There are free options out there that will do everything Playon will do with better support from not just the developers, but from the community. Stay far, far away from this software.

    "The best media server"

    January 10, 2014  |   By chaseknows

    Version: PlayOn 3.6.63

    Pros

Unlimited plugin's. Movies, Television, Sports, Concerts, Documentaries, Children programing, Radio Stations are unlimited.
All Satellite channels are available plus more that aren't offered on Dishnet. I Have over 10 thousand movies and TV shows available plus many more. Free Network Channels that covers all broadcasters, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and WB.

    Cons

I have no cons. From the initial download to total functionality took no more then 10 minutes to understand to actual watching. Playon is about as simple as any other application you would download and install and use.

    Summary

To start using Playon Software on my Roku took me about 10 minutes after the initial purchase and download. I went with the Life time along with Play Later DVR Software. I was so amazed with all of the Plugin's that it took me a few weeks to settle down to just watch a show. After several months later I'm still impressed with all Playon has to offer including the new Playon HD software upgrade

"great product if you know how to use it"

    January 7, 2014  |   By jimgerard

    Version: PlayOn 3.6.63

    Pros

With PlayOn you can access Hulu.com free which has much more content than Hulu+. While some networks do have mostly clips as some have complained, other networks (even cable) regularly post full new episodes. If you are a Roku user PlayOn gives you full access to your YouTube account which you can control from your couch with the Roku remote. I even use PlayOn as a DVR to catch network TV shows later which I missed when aired (I get the locals via directional antenna.

    Cons

You have to have the PlayOn server downloaded on a computer if you use Roku and if you are a sports nut (which I am not) there is little on PlayOn for you.
