PlayOn lets you take advantage of hardware you already have, in order to stream videos and other media to your TV from your computer. Whether you have a Roku, XBOX, Wii, or another compatible device, you can use this software to access over 100 channels on the computer to watch on the TV.

Pros

Lots of options: Everything about this software is designed to give you options in terms of what you want to view and how you want to view it. You can choose the browsers you want to stream from, including Chrome, IE, Firefox, and Opera. You can also use any of the compatible devices to connect to your TV, so you don't have to go buy any new hardware. And the app provides three different ways to watch your selected shows, including streaming directly, adding to a list to play later, or recording to watch offline.

Channel selection: There are tons of channel options available through this software, including Hulu, Vimeo, YouTube, Amazon Instant Video, NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS, Crackle, and many more. All you have to do is log in to your account for the selected service through the app to start watching right away.

Cons

Limiting requirements: Some of the channels offered through this app do still require you to have a cable subscription to access, such as HBO GO, Comedy Central, SyFy, and more. You also do need to have some console or other device to serve as the go-between from your computer to your TV. While most people have one or the other of the supported devices, it's not a guarantee, and the app will do you no good if you don't.

Bottom Line

PlayOn is an excellent option to consider when you want to watch online programming on your TV. It's straightforward to set up, and it opens up a lot of different content options. However, without a cable subscription, some channels won't be available to you.

"Support takes too long, and navigating on xbox a hassle"

December 17, 2015  |  By videomanUS

2015-12-17 20:08:47  |  By videomanUS

 |  Version: PlayOn 3.10.20

Pros

Some channels work fine for viewing/recording. It IS possible to view on the xbox one (through the xbox video player)

Cons

Could not get Hulu to work even though I had a paid subscription. PlayOn was for whatever reason not able to "get to it" properly, so recordings/playback of many shows would not work at all. Trying to troubleshoot, Support took too long, and requiring multiple tickets etc. In the end I just gave up getting it to work and cancelled Hulu. Finally, in Xbox (One), Recordings (those that work) come up nicely at the beginning of the menu, but the Media files that are not recorded come up as an option way at the end, after 100+ channels, so every time I try to go there, I have to scroll through all of those.. Would at least make sense to put it right after recordings??

Summary

I bought the lifetime version and at this point I feel a bit jipped.. It is able to record a couple of shows I like, and I am at least able to stream media to my XBOX (however cumbersome it is). The concept is great, the execution is a bit lacking, and at least the responsiveness in terms of getting support. (Though they do at least respond at some point, but the leadtime and running in circles "Please restart your server and try it again", "Log another ticket for this issue", was frustrating - especially since I am very experienced with computers and had even re-installed the application after cleaning it up (uninstall does not work great...).

"Once Great....Now Ruined! (November 2015)"

November 16, 2015  |  By rcraig5050

2015-11-16 20:10:38  |  By rcraig5050

 |  Version: PlayOn 3.10.20

Pros

Once great format now ruined with new improved (sic) "Grid" format. Untested and a huge failure.

Cons

They just ruined a great thing. They claim "our users spoke and we listened" Man is that a tired come on or what? They just went to a "grid" format which is fine but un-necessary for picking your channel or plug-in. Once you pick your
plug-in, it has made the whole system almost completely useless. OK, you go to 1channel for instance and then choose "Cops" from TV listings. Cops has 28 seasons and locating anything just took ten steps backwards. All right playon geniuses, lets have a race, ready? Get to the newest episode, oops, took me a split second and you are still trying to get there. Now, lets start at the 1st episode and race FORWARD through all the episodes to the last one. Wow, took me 3 seconds and you are way behind. Now, lets get to season 16 episode 12.I am there in 3 or 4 seconds but you can't even locate it because that info no longer shows, see you in an hour or 2. Now, how many streams are available for season 21 episode 37. There is no S21E37 (continued)

Summary

but it will take you HOURS because the info needed no longer shows and it is not even available with the great new "Grid" format. Two big thumbs down for releasing an obviously untested format that is utterly useless and moronic. Roku has frozen twice since downloading this update and never did before. No choice on this crap upgrade either and no way to unwind it.

"Only email for support, no Phone# or chat box"

November 12, 2015  |  By trevormz

2015-11-12 16:20:11  |  By trevormz

 |  Version: PlayOn 3.10.20

Pros

Good idea if it works.

Cons

If you have issues with billing they can take many days to respond. I actually only got a response from support.playon.tv, only when I threaten to go to the BBB. I even emailed the CEO, Jeff Lawrence, whose responses Ive copied to the summary. Not impressed, I don't think he actually read my email, but judge for your self.

Summary

Here's a copy of our conversation:...I have requested a refund from your support team on November 7th when you dinged my paypal account for 19.99. I received 1 reply informing me how to activate my account, I replied to this email again stating my request for a refund and after 4 follow-up emails requesting a refund going unreplied to, I have decided to try another way to get your company's attention. I have been more than patient but this is gone on too long. I sent a complaint to the BBB this morning requesting a reply to my concerns.
his response:...I see there were multiple replies to your messages. Your mail service may be putting them in your junk mail folder. Please check there.

My response:
I guess you count a automatic email response as a reply. I should have been more specific, I meant a reply from a person, which took 4 days. And yes I did check my junk mail. It seems like you believe customer service is served by a automated email response and that would be fine if it includes a contact number which your's does not.

His response: I'm not referring to an auto reply. A person ("Russ") replied to you with a personalized response (containing your specific information) the day after you first wrote.

I guess he didn't actually read my email to him because I did mention that I got 1 reply, which only addressed how to sign into Playon. My problem arose when I asked "Russ" to refund my money, that is when my replies and email went unanswered for many days.

"PlayOn Becomes Mobile $$$ Scam!"

November 08, 2015  |  By prston

2015-11-08 00:32:57  |  By prston

 |  Version: PlayOn 3.10.20

Pros

Absolutely no Pros. It did not work as advertised.

Cons

PlayOn charges $4 MONTHLY for its service that does not work.
Customer Service is highly uncooperative.
Very difficult to cancel PlayOn monthly charges.

Summary

The Free TRIAL requires the user to provide his or her credit card number. I tried to make PlayOn work between my Windows 7 PC and my Samsung Note 4 (using the PlayOn app for Android). PlayOn totally failed. I tried to cancel my account via email. All I got from PlayOn customer service was 'form' replies. Then lame excuses and broken promises. FINALLY, I HAD TO FILE A DISPUTE WITH MY CREDIT CARD COMPANY TO STOP PLAYON's MONTHLY CHARGES. *** BUYERS PLEASE BEWARE OF THIS FRAUD CALLED PLAYON.

"Decent product, when it works, but pathetic support"

November 01, 2015  |  By Jeff Shapiro

2015-11-01 10:49:11  |  By Jeff Shapiro

 |  Version: PlayOn 3.10.20

Pros

does successfully rip some programs

Cons

doesn't work properly with AMC or HGTV (and I've tried on three computers with the same results)

Summary

I like some of the features that PlayOn offers, but I've been going back and forth with their email support for weeks with no resolution to problems that I've experienced with AMC and HGTV. Each time I send an email, they reply two days later with a suggestion to stop and restart the PlayOn server, try again, and email them if this doesn't fix the problem. Given that the program isn't reliable, even with the latest upgrade that combined PlayOn and PlayLater, I don't consider it worth the price (both in dollars and aggravation dealing with a support team that seemingly does nothing). I'm wondering if they actually have someone handling support emails, or if their system just sends the same canned stop/restart service email to anyone that has an issue.

"Not all its cracked up to be"

September 26, 2015  |  By SINBAD

2015-09-26 21:46:29  |  By SINBAD

 |  Version: PlayOn 3.10.20

Pros

Loads of channels (if it would only work)

Cons

DOES NOT WORK RIGHT. I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO WATCH A SHOW FROM BEGINNING TO END.

Summary

HERE IS SOME OF THE THINGS I HAVE ENCOUNTERED:

IT WILL PLAY FOR MAYBE 20-60 SECONDS AND THEN THE PICTURE DISAPPEARS AND YOU SIT AND WATCH A BLACK SCREEN WHICH JUST SAYS "LOADING". THEN AFTER A MINUTE OR SO THE SHOW CONTINUES. IF YOU CAN PUT UP WITH THIS FOR CLOSE TO AN HOUR THEN IT GETS TO THE ENDING AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE "LOADING" JUST STAYS THERE FOREVER.

YOU THEN TRY TO START IT FROM WHERE YOU LEFT OFF BUT CANNOT FAST FORWARD IT AND YOU ARE EXPECTED TO SIT THERE THROUGH ALL THE COMMERCIALS AND EVERYTHING UNTIL YOU GET TO WHERE IT LEFT OFF.

YOU ARE FORCED TO WATCH THE COMMERCIALS WHICH I FIND IN OTHER "ACTUAL FREE" SOFTWARE I DO OT HAVE TO ENDURE. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR FAST FORWARD ALSO.

TODAY I WAS TRYING TO WATCH A SHOW WITH ALL THIS HAPPENING AND JUST DECIDED TO PUT IT ON PAUSE, AFTER ABOUT 4 HOURS I CAME BACK TO SEE IF IT WOULD PLAY AS IT SHOULD. WAS UNABLE TO RESTART IT AS IT SAID I NEEDED TO GO BACK TO MY ROKU MAIN MENU AND RESTART THIS SHOW. DECIDED TO TRY TO SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN. STARTED UP RIGHT AT THE BEGINNING WITH THE COMMERCIAL AND UNABLE TO FAST FORWARD TO WHERE I HAD PAUSED IT. (:

THEY SAY YOU CAN RECORD TV SHOWS BUT I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND THIS FEATURE.

SUPPORT SUCKS!!!! YOU ASK QUESTIONS BUT EITHER THEY ANSWER YOU WITH TERMS YOU ARE UNFAMILIAR WITH INSTEAD OF JUST EXPLAINING IT IN SIMPLE FORWARD LANGUAGE. OR THEY REFER YOU TO THE USER GUIDE WHICH IS ALSO WRITTEN IN SOME STRANGE LANGUAGE THAT A NORMAL EVERYDAY PERSON DOES NOT UNDERSTAND.
I BOUGHT THIS FOR A SUBSTITUTION FOR PLEX AS IT HAD A FEW BUGS WHEN I FIRST USED IT BUT SORRY I DID NOT WAIT FOR PLEX TO WORK RIGHT.
I ONLY WISH I HAD NOT WASTED MY SOCIAL SECURITY FUNDS ON THIS. JUST THINK OF THE NICE DINNERS I COULD HAVE HAD AND ENJOYED INSTEAD OF THIS PIECE OF HORSE MANURE.

I WILL STICK WITH MY FREE "PLEX" WITH FAR LESS PROBLEMS.

"The nitty gritty about PlayOn and PlayLater"

August 31, 2015  |  By mbstormoen

2015-08-31 17:55:33  |  By mbstormoen

 |  Version: PlayOn 3.10.20

Pros

It does what it says it does. It will stream and record shows from just about any network. It works on the Roku and PS3 (I have tried both). I am able to stream from my PC wirelessly to my Roku 3 with very few hiccups but I have a higher end wireless gaming router. I have been running it for 2 years and it has saved me a ton of money already and it will just keep saving me money moving forward.

Cons

It is not a plug and play app there is setup and trial and error involved with this application. You will also need a 30M or higher internet connection with a decent router for it to run efficiently. You will need a bit of storage if you want to record in HD. About 1GB per hour of recording. I use a NAS to store my videos. I guess what I am saying is that you need to put a bit of thought and probably money into your infrastructure if you want this to work near flawlessly. Another downside is that it is all manual for the recordings because PlayLater does not have a scheduling option. I set all of my shows to record overnight and just leave my laptop on. Then the next day I transfer my recordings to my NAS for viewing.

Summary

This is a great application if you want to "cut the cord" and you are willing to put some time and a bit of money into it. I did a bunch of research before buying the lifetime subscription. My set up ended up costing $750 for the NAS, $130 for my router and $100 for my Roku 3. I then subscribed to Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime and recently CBS All Access. Everything else I already had: a decent running laptop, 60M internet connection and time for setup and tinkering. So that is less than $1000 for hardware plus about $30 per month in online streaming but it is saving me $110 per month, that's $1320 per year, for cable. So just over a year for this to pay for itself. This is just my experience and it may not be for everyone.

"About the worst software I ever tried to use"

July 17, 2015  |  By joe7777777777

2015-07-17 21:49:19  |  By joe7777777777

 |  Version: PlayOn 3.10.20

Pros

Playback of prerecorded videos IN THE RIGHT FORMAT worked fine. Over three days of trying I was never able to get even ONE program playing on either IE, Firefox or Chrome to "CAST" or transfer to the Roku 3 box. PlayON support tried to help, but they had no idea what to do and sent me on several time consuming but fruitless efforts.

Cons

I was never able to get "CAST" or streaming to work from any of three computers, two running Windows 8.1 and one running Win 7. I finally discovered that Roku had a new beta feature that works to Firefox versions 39 and later that sends ROKU 3 (late versions) streaming video directly from Firefox with no intervening program. This worked perfectly from the start.

Summary

For how to successfully stream from a Windows 8.1 PC to a ROKU 3 box see: http://support.roku.com/entries/56637184-How-do-I-use-Firefox-Video-Casting-BETA-

"This is driving me insane!!"

June 21, 2015  |  By Markyajv

2015-06-21 08:51:06  |  By Markyajv

 |  Version: PlayOn 3.10.20

Pros

Very easy to install on your windows computer. Easy to understand user interface. Play "My Media" seamlessly (Ie:Video files on my computer or external hard drive) to my TV. Easy to set up plug ins and sign in to certain channels while still on the computer.

Cons

This has given me nothing but trouble for almost a year now. I read the website many times before purchasing a lifetime membership. It came with a Chromecast. NONE of the channels will play any clip or video ay all. It will connect to the app on your TV, it will let you see all of the stations and plug-ins, it will let you browse all the stations and clips, but...when you click play on ANY channel it goes into a "Loading" pop up and the little movie reel spins and then it times out and tells you to shut down the app and restart it. I have tried this over 100 times. I stopped using the Chromecast and got a Roku 3 and a Roku Stick and the same exact problems happen. All tech support is done via e-mail. They have NO phone support. I do not know how many tickets I submitted to try and get this to work until I finally gave up. Wish I had a trial period before I bought lifetime membership. This is just a piece of crap as far as watching any of the preloaded channels and any plug ins.

Summary

The PlayLater portion of this works very "Spotty" I was able to record some programs but a lot just timed out or got stuck buffering. No good at all for watching any of their advertised channels. The MyMedia portion is the only feature I have had no problem with but I use PLEX as my media server because of the excellent Metadata availability. I can see the movie poster so I know what I want to watch. (I have over a thousand movies on my drives) It also has channels that work %100 of the time as well as using the Roku to add hidden channels (PLEX IS FREE!!) Until I can get this to be able to actually stream channels I'd say don't pay for it.(P.S. Every other streaming service I have or did own worked perfectly wirelessly in my apartment (Ie: Netflix, Hulu,Amazon etc - Not not going through the PlayOn. Only through their website and casting or on the Roku App) My computer is running an AMD A8 processor with 8GB ram and a 1TB hard drive. My internet speed is 25/25. I can't give it a good grade or review until it actually works like they say.
