Once upon a time, only tabloid newspapers and Soviet dictators had the power to make unwanted objects and people vanish from photographs. Thanks to digital photography and free tools like PhotoWipe from Hanov Solutions, though, anyone can send un-persons down the memory hole. You can also use it to remove signs and logos to meet copyright restrictions, reveal hidden details in your pictures, and make creative images, not just banish old flames and new enemies from your snapshots.

As is fitting for a simple-to-use, highly focused tool, PhotoWipe's interface is sparse; just a basic suite of file menus and an Open button for selecting files. We chose a random image from our Funny folder, a famous face. Images open in PhotoWipe's interface with a basic palette of drawing tools and draggable objects in several shapes and sizes. Using the program is simple: paint over with black anything you want removed from the image and then click Go. PhotoWipe's image algorithms reconstruct the image based on surrounding image data, with varying degrees of success. It works pretty well with landscapes, group images, and complex images with many elements; notorious noses, not so much. However, even the imperfect fill-in was effective enough to serve the purpose; namely, making a funny picture. The palette includes several prefigured shapes like circles and rectangles that you can drag and drop on the images. We especially like the rectangular bar, which you can drag to fit over the eyes of the innocent and anonymous. The Preview button and eraser icon proved effective in use, and the program played nicely with a Wacom tablet, too.

Full-featured photo editors and graphics packages can do what PhotoWipe does and much more, of course, if you can afford them and have the time to spend learning how to use them. Tools like PhotoWipe simplify the process by focusing on just a few things. Though not every fix it makes is seamless, PhotoWipe is fun and easy to use.

"Does the one thing it's advertised to do pretty well"

October 06, 2010  |  By bjkeefe

 |  Version: PhotoWipe 1.20

Pros

Clean and simple, fairly intuitive interface. Easier to use this tool than some others to accomplish its one stated task.

Cons

1. Needs explanation (balloon tips would be enuf) of right-most icon on toolbar.
2. Some tools (e.g. rectangle) cause curious artifacts to be produced by the processing algorithm; i.e., does not just blend as best it can, intuitively speaking.

Summary

For a quick and dirty removal of, say, some overlay text on a picture, does a decent job without much user effort or knowledge required. Is not a miracle worker by any stretch -- for that, you'd want to learn how to use a more advanced tool -- but for, say, a quick pic to be posted on your blog, it's probably good enough.

An example of the best I could clean up an image may be seen here (link to original image, for comparison, is also there):

"Needs more information on how to use the erasing icons"

September 30, 2010  |  By terri901

 |  Version: PhotoWipe 1.20

Pros

Great on really small areas like trigs and leaves. Anything lager and the "guess" work
is not very good.

Cons

I don't really like the way it leaves some black marks after erasing

Summary

I like that it will take out something obstructing a view. But don't like some of the
guess work replacements it puts in.I am also disappointed that there are no
instructions for the different uses of the tools as some of them don't seem to work
at all.

"Ineffective, better done with PhotoScape Clone Stamp."

September 24, 2010  |  By edathenrico

 |  Version: PhotoWipe 1.20

Pros

Good Zoom-in (Picture magnification) and positioning.

Cons

Over all not very effective. Can achieve better results in much less time and little or no saving of intermediate results if I use the Clone Stamp feature in PhotoScape or the Clone function of Gimp 2.

Summary

Not worth fooling with. Better software available for removing unwanted subject from a photo.

"oh oh, no-go!"

September 21, 2010  |  By fatalfflaw

 |  Version: PhotoWipe 1.20

Pros

nothing, it doesn't work

Cons

loads up a picture fine but when I go to 'paint' out the desired area the whole photo goes black

Summary

I may try to reinstall it, but when I disinstalled says 'some components could not be removed,,,do it by hand' or something to that effect. so now I imagine I have some orphan components running around in my hard disc (or register, or whatever) Thanks for recommending it.......
