PhotoPad Image Editor doesn't have the depth of features found in pro image editors, but it does have all the basic editing tools and lets you apply some neat effects without any specialized knowledge. If you don't want to get past a steep learning curve in order to edit your images, this is a very solid download.
The program installs very quickly, but in the last step you will be prompted to download Google Chrome and set it as your default browser, so uncheck the box if you don't want this extra. PhotoPad Image Editor's plain interface has a large editing window under a File menu with all the options easily accessible, including Edit, Color, Effects, Tools, and Suite. A toolbar displays options that change with each menu option, so it's never cluttered or hard to find what you're looking for. Once you choose an icon, you can apply the effects and tweaks in a sidebar menu that also shows your history of changes, which was a very nice touch. The editing tools are basic and allow you to crop, flip, or resize the image. Under Color, you can adjust the brightness and contrast, and instantly apply a sepia or grayscale effect. The Effects let you blur or sharpen the image, but also include options to quickly pixelate your image or make it look like an oil painting. The Tools section is where you can add text, or draw on the image freeform, and turn your image into a collage, mosaic, or panorama. Finally, the Suite tools let you upload your image to Facebook or Flickr or send it through e-mail. We liked that most options are easily set with a slider and you can instantly see how it changes your image, and just as importantly, easily undo any changes you've made.
PhotoPad Image Editor's slider approach might not give you the control you'd want if you were an image editing pro, but for the casual photographer, it's a great way to tweak your image and apply some very polished effects. It's so easy to use that most won't even need to crack open the Help file to use it. Best of all, it's free, so you've got nothing to lose by trying the program out.

Version: PhotoPad Professional Photo Editor 2.88
Very versatile photo editor. Haven't had any problems with malware, but I downloaded my copy straight from NCH Software and not a third party software distributor that will slip in some unwanted programs, if you do not pay attention to the installation and uncheck any boxes containing software that you do do not want.
It cost money after a brief trail period, but you shouldn't expect anything in life to be free.
If you subscribe to the NCH email, they put the software on sale that really makes it an affordable option to Photoshop.
Thank you for leaving such a well-thought-out review! We are glad to hear that PhotoPad has worked out so well for you. For future reference, PhotoPad Professional can be registered for unlimited use after purchase.
Feature-filled and excellent for the price, this was a great purchase. I bought it for the photomosaic capability, but I find it great and easy to use for other purposes as well. Well worth the small price!
1. Easy to learn and use ( as are all NCH suite products ).
2. Capable of All BASIC photo editing necessities of a home user.
3. User friendly when it comes to managing multiple images.
4. Well integrated with other NCH suite products such as VideoPad Video Editor.
1. Incomplete. As far as both home use and professinal use, it does not provide All needed functions.
2. It takes considerable practice to acquire productive speed in case of large scale editing.
As far as home use, a cup of coffee and a few hours go, this product is all you need to QUICLY edit your photos all the way from basic editing to halfway through all you would do at home with a photo or image.
For home use I STRONGLY RECOMMEND the NCH product suite, Especially for it's ease of learning and use.
As a side note, after I have acquired NCH VideoPad VideoEditor, it took me no more than one week to produce very high quality amateur YouTube editing.
Products such as those from more acclaimed software developers have proven taking a way longer trial and error to get a good grip on.
As far as personal opinion goes, NCH suite products have as main quality the ease and quickness with wich an unexperienced new user of such products can begin obtaining great results.
User friendly and intuitive, but sadly incomplete.
For the beginning, you cannot go wrong with NCH product suite, but after a while, you will be sadly forced to move on to software that provides more options in the same editing group, not to be forced to use 3 or 4 programs to edit the same picture.
Overall, a GREAT home use product !
Sadly, the fifth star is lacking strictly because the limitation as number of options.
If NCH resolves to add All possible options as far as non-professional use goes in further updates, this editing suite has real potential to become one of the market leaders.
DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS SOFTWARE!! NCH is well known to include malware and spyware in their installation packages. You will never get this stuff off your PC, without a drive wipe. Shame on CNET for allowing these thugs to allow their software to be downloaded. Losing my trust in CNET lately, will stop downloading from this site from now on.
You don't need a college course to learn it!!!! I am including with family photos and the photo album program for future generations. Works that well and on a thumb drive. Doesn't have to be installed on C:\drive.
would like universal save (no drive Letter) for save to what ever storage the program is on.
Most people don't need photo shop. You do need a program and a company that will keep your program current no matter what the future operating systems may be. This one seems to do just that.
