Editors' review

PhotoPad Image Editor doesn't have the depth of features found in pro image editors, but it does have all the basic editing tools and lets you apply some neat effects without any specialized knowledge. If you don't want to get past a steep learning curve in order to edit your images, this is a very solid download.

The program installs very quickly, but in the last step you will be prompted to download Google Chrome and set it as your default browser, so uncheck the box if you don't want this extra. PhotoPad Image Editor's plain interface has a large editing window under a File menu with all the options easily accessible, including Edit, Color, Effects, Tools, and Suite. A toolbar displays options that change with each menu option, so it's never cluttered or hard to find what you're looking for. Once you choose an icon, you can apply the effects and tweaks in a sidebar menu that also shows your history of changes, which was a very nice touch. The editing tools are basic and allow you to crop, flip, or resize the image. Under Color, you can adjust the brightness and contrast, and instantly apply a sepia or grayscale effect. The Effects let you blur or sharpen the image, but also include options to quickly pixelate your image or make it look like an oil painting. The Tools section is where you can add text, or draw on the image freeform, and turn your image into a collage, mosaic, or panorama. Finally, the Suite tools let you upload your image to Facebook or Flickr or send it through e-mail. We liked that most options are easily set with a slider and you can instantly see how it changes your image, and just as importantly, easily undo any changes you've made.

PhotoPad Image Editor's slider approach might not give you the control you'd want if you were an image editing pro, but for the casual photographer, it's a great way to tweak your image and apply some very polished effects. It's so easy to use that most won't even need to crack open the Help file to use it. Best of all, it's free, so you've got nothing to lose by trying the program out.

"Great Mosaic Tool, fair image editor"

    January 24, 2012   |   By roxannej77

    Version: PhotoPad Image Editor 2.21

    Pros

-Easy to use controls. Great for beginners.
-Can quickly edit pictures very well one at a time.
-Good selection of tools, with easy slider adjustments.
    -Great help section
-Excellent Mosaic Tool for combining your images into a larger picture.
-Interface for uploading to Flickr or Facebook
-Interfaces with other NCH software (if you have it)
    -Love the local focus effect.
-Easy to collage or layer pictures.

    Cons

-Found the crop tool to be disappointing, it is precise, but does not have preset ratio list to choose from.
-Similarly, the resize option will always keep aspect ratio the same. It does not allow you to stretch the entire project, you may stretch layers though.
-The panorama tool was not good at all. Does not cache to drive and tries to do all of the computations in ram. Seems are visible and requires further edits.. HUGIN is much much much much better for panoramas.
-Text tool is very poor. Does not allow outline, or drop shadow or any other features... just font style, font size, bold, italics, underline, pixel width.
-Though the mosaic tool is Excellent, it does require the photo pool of pictures to be in a single folder. (not hard to work around, but does make an extra step if you want to use pictures from multiple folders.)

    Summary

If you are looking for an easy to use photo editor that will neatly get the job done on a few pictures to upload, this is a very competent tool. I would highly recommend it to folks beginning to learn photo editing, since the tools are easy to use and the controls are not too complicated.
If you are looking for a mosaic program, this is a very good one. I have not tried others, but this one will produce a very high res well matched mosaic using your pictures.(They do have to all be in one folder though.)
There is better photo editing software available on this site. I am keeping this one installed and will probably only use it for Mosaics.
If you are a power user of photo editors, you will not like the controls on this program. They are easy to use, but they will not be what you are used to and expect of a graphic editing program. It does not have a batch tool processor of any kind, and lacks utilization of the mouse wheel for zooming. But if you are looking for a mosaic tool, this will do the trick.

"Updated Software .. Fewer Features ????"

    April 17, 2011   |   By rongrehl

    Version: PhotoPad Image Editor 2.1

    Pros

For use on a single photograph, the software does an excellent job.

    Cons

The prior version allowed for multiple photos to be brought into the software. As far as we can see, this newer version limits the updates to a single photograph. Very time consuming and a step backward from the prior version.

    Summary

If you are updating single photographs, then this product will work very well. If, however, you need to update multiple photographs in a single 'pass' then another product which serve your needs better.

"This thing is the best idea since sliced bread"

    December 15, 2010   |   By Robb47

    Version: PhotoPad Image Editor 2.0

    Pros

It is soooooo easy to use. I am in NO WAY a computer geek, I'm really more phobic - but this program makes me feel smart.

    Cons

I can't think of even one.

    Summary

I've been talking this up to ALL my friends who are - like me - kinda techno-stupid.(read 'old').

"Good way of getting used to an image editor"

    October 18, 2010   |   By cja12026

    Version: PhotoPad Image Editor 1.15

    Pros

An easy intro to image editing, offering the chance to observe the choices in action before committing to a saved image.

    Cons

Just a bit slow on my older computer.

    Summary

Offers much more manual editing options than auto photo programs, without being too difficult to learn to use. The fine tuning of the image is (nearly) in real time, and can be wound back to suit.

"Excellent simple to use photo editor"

    May 19, 2010   |   By lifetimeautoproducts

    Version: PhotoPad Image Editor 1.15

    Pros

I was searching for a simple photo enhancing program that did not include death rays, blinky lights or a user interface that I'd have to go through a college course to learn. The interface very intuitive.

    Cons

Didn't have any cons at this point. If your a photo editing power user you probably have already purchased a product with more features than this. The photos I needed re-sized and enhanced were completed quickly. I will continue to use this product.

"A good program for simple pix editing"

    December 30, 2009   |   By tzu1500

    Version: PhotoPad Image Editor 1.14

    Pros

It is a great program for simple pix editing. It isn't a Photoshop type program but better than Infranview.

    Cons

So far I haven't found any real problems, but I will when I use it more. We always want something more than what we have.

"Simple, easy to use... just like all NCH programs. Thx!"

    October 17, 2009   |   By Eric-Canada

    Version: PhotoPad Image Editor 1.14

    Pros

Simple, intuitive tools -- like resizing, cropping, overlay. Easy to use without iprior knowledge of photo editing. I use many NCH programs and they are all excellent. How they can do it for FREE is beyond me -- but thanks, Folks!

    Cons

Would love to have a figure-cropping tool built in -- so one could isolate/extract certain elements in a picture. But that may be asking too much for a free product!

    Summary

(Thanks to both CNET and NCH for their fine services - and products.)
