Weak on pizazz but strong where it counts, PdaNet is a cross-platform app that lets you tether your smartphone to a computer either via USB or Bluetooth DUN. When you use PdaNet, you won't have to root your phone, a major time- and stress-saver. This version works on Android phones.

There are two ways to install it. You can download it directly to your phone, connect your phone to your computer, mount the phone as a drive, and the run the executable from there. Or you can download it directly to your computer and run it. Either way, the instructions that accompany the installation are clear and concise in getting you going. Once everything's been installed, connect the phone to your laptop, run the phone app, and then complete the connection from the PdaNet system tray icon.

Our Internet connection speeds were nearly identical over USB tether as when using the phone separately. We didn't test the Bluetooth DUN speeds, but the publisher warns that they will be slower. PdaNet for Android has one limitation. After 30 days, PdaNet requires you to buy a license, otherwise it will block access to secure HTTPS Web sites such as Gmail. That's a tempting carrot, but for those who don't need access to secure sites, the free version should be more than enough. There were also occasional hiccups when waking the laptop from hibernating, but otherwise there were no connection problems. To get around those apparent connection loss situations, disconnect and then re-establish the tether. PdaNet is light on system resources, and an easy-to-use choice for those who want the benefits of tethering without the risks involved in rooting.

"installation is hokey, but great tool once installed"

January 31, 2011  |  By pizzicato66

 |  Version: PdaNet for Android (32-bit Windows Installer) 2.41

Pros

Quick, easy application that connects and runs fast on my droid x. It also helps me avoid that pesky wifi plan that verizon is insisting on. Nice that it also recharges my droid from my laptop while I'm using it because it uses the USB connection!

Cons

installation and configuration is a little hokey. It may work better now than before. make sure your laptop has the latest network drivers or you may have issues on the laptop side.

Summary

Fast, free connectivity from the web through your droid! I use it on the train daily.

"Works, if...."

July 26, 2010  |  By ejmfoley

 |  Version: PdaNet for Android (32-bit Windows Installer) 2.41

Pros

Gets your computer online, at a decent speed.

Cons

Disconnects on my EVO shortly after any screen timeout.

Summary

When running this app, change your screen timeout settings to Never turn off. This way your computer stays connected. If it stayed connected when the screen times out, it would be a 5 star app.

Updated on Aug 23, 2010

Update from version 2.41 to 2.42 corrected problem with screen timeout.

Now FIVE STARS*****

Updated on Oct 24, 2010

Now at version 2.45. With Android now at 2.2 and the 4G coverage areas starting to fill in (Chicagoland - Sprint - EVO), if I hook up a computer to the internet through my phone, I can get cable-like speeds. Awesome.

"Tremendous - Android 2.1 ATT Aria - Excellent product"

July 22, 2010  |  By lpg1

 |  Version: PdaNet for Android (32-bit Windows Installer) 2.41

Pros

Easy to install - did not have to change any settings. I had HTC Sync installed on computer for outlook sync and Pdanet's installer used it. Download Pdanet for you OS mine was XP 32bit. Follow instructions for startup.

Cons

none found

Summary

I used USB 2.0 at 480mbs per sec. I have an ATT microcell in my house so I have full bars. I got 2.4k throughput. The internet pages loaded very fast. I ran a nextflix film and it looked great.

Very happy since ATT had told me eariler that they did not support this.

"PDAnet is awesome for internet access via 3g phone."

July 09, 2010  |  By tayter-tot

 |  Version: PdaNet for Android (32-bit Windows Installer) 2.41

Pros

+ Very fast & reliable speeds vs. EasyTether.
+ Tracks the bytes sent/received every time a connection is made.
+ I have never experienced a dropped connection other than an interrupted phone call.
+ Phone does not have to be rooted.

Cons

+ Cannot access https websites after the trail version expires, which is 30 days later.
+ Cost of full version is very expensive, $23.95 ($18.95 sale) at the junefabrics.com site.
+ Has to be connected via USB cable.

Summary

Overall, PDAnet is a wonderful app, given the pros it has. My only problem are the cons, which is a downfall. If it was a little bit cheaper, maybe $9.95, then I would upgrade to the full version, but if anyone does have the full version, please do share the registration code. It is possible to have only one registered license for the phone app, but unlimited for the computer (junefabrics.com can verify this in the HELP section). Thanks. :-)

July 03, 2010  |  By planetjeffy

 |  Version: PdaNet for Android (32-bit Windows Installer) 2.41

Pros

Just downloaded it on my Incredible and laptop. Works as well as my wireless card, that I pay $60 per month. I'm going to test it for a week and then cancel my mobile broadband.

Cons

Not as elegant as using an expresscard - but who cares when I can save $700 a year.

Summary

Mobile broadband for free (with your android phone).

"Good if not used for a long time,PHONE WILL HEAT UP"

June 15, 2010  |  By Jrmiguely

 |  Version: PdaNet for Android (32-bit Windows Installer) 2.41

Pros

Its faster then dial up and it gets the job done mobile without having to pay extra fee and it just uses your data plan WHICH IS ALREADY FREE if u have a smart phone and paying the 29.99/mth(required for all smartphones)

Cons

Gets phone hot mhile using. I would not suggest for long uses and u will know when the phone is usually over temp cause the status light with flash green and orange. it happens to when using goodle maps

Summary

Its a good app that gets the job done and its in my opinion faster then dial up internet and sucks cause after the TRAIL they require u to buy the app and cant really use the web if it requires log in just like to check mail or anything tht uses a password. i also can say its really nice if u are using it for minimal use cause it makes your phone heat up and it takes some work to get it configured to work with your comp as far as the settings. I HAVE THE HTC INCREDIABLE and found tht i have to dissconnect and reconnect the MOBILE NETWORK to work each time i plug it into the comp
