Build a robust Linux install with dozens of functions and applications designed to work on hard drives. Building Parted Magic LiveCD requires a CD burning tool to create the bootable CD with the OS and functions.

Booting into the Linux OS offers numerous commands to work on your hard drive, and includes more functions than we could list here. Users should definitely take the time to surf to the publisher's Web site to study the CD's major applications before getting started. Some instructions are included with this package, but testers recommend only experienced users tackle this OS and applications. Many of the functions are easy to use, but improperly set actions could result in damage to your file structure. As the publishers note, this version of Parted Magic uses VisParted and Parted, but version 2.2 includes the more popular Gparted, a robust tool with the capability to change drive partitions without losing data.

Still, this version of the freeware is a powerful efficient tool to help experienced users manipulate their hard drives.

"Your 911 for Computer Needs"

October 12, 2011  |  By oscarivera9

 |  Version: Parted Magic 6.7

Pros

It is loaded with great features. You can check your hard-drives with the SMART tool, run a Memory Test, create, delete, re-size, and even move partitions, clone (copy) entire disks or single partitions, surf the web with Mozilla, run a benchmark of your entire hardware, listen to music from your PC library while you're fixing it, the list goes on.
Since Parted Magic is an actual Operating System which boots Live from the CD, you can do almost anything that you normally would do with your standard OS, and more. Parted Magic is designed to help you fix problems which might prevent you from booting into your OS. It's also good at working with partitions (as the name implies). It comes loaded with tons of very useful software. In case you're confused or just need to surf the web while you're waiting for a task to complete, you can use Mozilla Firefox which is the default web browser included with Parted Magic.
Instead of reading about it, just download it, burn an iso image & try it Live.

Cons

It doesn't talk to me and ask me what I want it to do so that it can do it automatically. It expects that I will use its valuable tools instead of IT using them for me and fixing the problems that I caused. Anyone who complains about Parted Magic must be expecting exactly that.

Summary

I try to always have the latest version available in a Live CD from which I can boot in case of emergency. It's already saved me a handful of times from disasters I would have needed professional help to get fixed. If you own a computer you should also own a copy of Parted Magic. It is a Linux Operating System, but it will fix any computer, regardless of your choice of OS.
.....and I believe the newest version comes with the new Linux Kernel 3.0! No big deal really, just a new number.

"Buggy product, censored forum"

August 17, 2010  |  By superdupereric

 |  Version: Parted Magic LiveCD 5.7

Pros

Boot USB eventually when USB stick plugged directly in (bypassing hub)

Cons

NTFS operations fail or crash the PC
Whacky forum administrators for Parted Magic delete your account for criticizing product

Summary

Attempting to do basic operations like copy NTFS partition result in
"target partition too small". (Yes, I know, don't ask me.) If I manually
create a larger partition, I am able to copy into it, but performing an
NTFS resize later to make it smaller crashes my laptop, leaving the
new partition corrupted and unusable.

I posted my problems to their forum and mentioned that because of these bugs
I had to continue my search for a partitioning software that wasn't so buggy,
and the administrator made a "roll eyes" post mocking my statement. I replied with
a question asking why they didn't want to get more information from me to fix the
problem rather than poke fun at me.

The next day when I came back, my entire account had been wiped out without
comment, including not just that thread, but another where I had posted the
solution to my usb booting problem (don't use a hub). Oddly, they left the rest
of thread there, just not my post, so it's completely useless to other users.

Hopefully, at least here I can speak freely without those goofballs wiping my account.

"It worked to transfer my files to a larger drive"

July 18, 2010  |  By JIM1NOTE

 |  Version: Parted Magic LiveCD 5.7

Pros

I misplaced my Partition Magic disks and downloaded Parted Magic (pmagic-zip). This program work very well. I did come across my Partition Magic disks and they are rather dated. I will not look for them the next time.

Cons

I was not able to boot the new partition and remembered finally to run a MBR rebuild. Only problems were mine.

Summary

It ran well without those fatal Partition errors from Partition Magic which seem to accept no resolution or work around.

"Terrific - Worked where others failed (v 3.5)"

July 29, 2009  |  By GCRyder

 |  Version: Parted Magic LiveCD 5.7

Pros

Boots when DOS-based repair disks won't, contains huge collection of disk and partition test and repair programs in addition to partitioning programs. Contains TestDisk, an especially useful program, along with Clonezilla.

Cons

Documentation for the programs is sparse, even in the project wiki. The fortunate exception is TestDisk, which has a good walk-through in the wiki.

Summary

The project is now at version 3.5, and very impressive. I somehow messed up the geometry of my main hard drive while resizing one of its partitions. No boot thereafter - black screen, flashing cursor. I was able to boot from a Puppy Linux Live CD and see that everything was still there, but I figured I had messed up the boot sector. I tried to repair with the XP install CD, but got a stop error with BSOD. Same with Bart PE and UBCDW. But Parted Magic worked like ... well, magic. I ran Memtest first from its boot screen to eliminate the possibility I was dealing with a RAM error, Then I booted with VGA drivers. The Test Disk program alerted me to the problem, and provided a tip on how to repair the disk geometry. Somehow, my resizing of the D partition had re-written the CHS Head spec to 16, instead of 255. Repair took about two minutes from there, mainly because I was reading every screen twice and being ultra-careful.

Additional "con" of sorts: TestDisk's name is inadequate to alert users to its functions. It does a lot more than testing.

Updated on Jul 29, 2009

Update: I just realized that I was using v 4.3, not 3.5. No idea where I got that wrong number. The version I used is available from the project website at http://partedmagic.com. Why v.3 is still appearing here at CNet is a mystery to me.

"Successful using the liveCD,"

July 07, 2009  |  By ahtoi

 |  Version: Parted Magic LiveCD 5.7

Pros

I was able to partition the harddrive easily but the problem I have was that my win2000 was not able to see the whole drive. I will have to figure that one out.

Cons

no opinion.

Summary

This is a sata drive, it worked at one time but now Partition Magic and win2000 couldn't do anything with it (I think it has something to do with the FAT table being all mess up). At least now I got part of the drive back.

"Free and worked perfectly on Windows 2003 Server"

March 20, 2009  |  By cblakework

 |  Version: Parted Magic LiveCD 5.7

Pros

Booting to the CD and resizing my root partition took a mere 5 minutes. It took longerr to burn the CD on my old writer.

Cons

Too bad you have to run it from CD

Summary

Worked perfectly, just had to Scandisk on booting, but after that it was seamless. I'm keeping the CD in my toolkit.
