I have done a review few weeks ago, and I just can't stop of saying great things about these guys. I only have to say you are GREAT. You deserve 7 or an 8 stars. You ought to be proud of yourself. Being part of something great happens once in a life time. Enjoy !

Version: Parallels Desktop for Mac 2.1.1832.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is an amazing program in its low cost (under $40 when finally released) and its capabilities. I have been using Windows in it as a production environment since beta 4, and other than the shared folders not working, have had no problems since beta 5. Windows is fast and responsive, and it takes less time to bring it up from Parallels than on my real Athlon 2000 box. I am impressed with the company's support as well. Features are being added as needed and the basic function is terrific.

"BEWARE - Multiple versions released as B6"

Version: Parallels Desktop for Mac 2.1b6

    Summary

B6 has been re released with changes, but they decided not to tell anybody . Networking problems and problems with Tools.

My Windows 2000 installation is much less usable than B5. No networking, No printing.

Not ready for anybody that is not a major Windows freak with unlimited knowledge.

    "Very Nice!"

Version: Parallels Desktop for Mac 2.1b5

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I'm using Parallels on a dual core Mac mini. It works nicely, running XP Pro. Considering the fact that Parallels costs less than a quarter of my XP license, I immediately purchased it (compared to MS Virtual PC it is a steal at $39).

The new (1.b5) full-screen switching a la user switch (turning cude) is a nice touch. I've found that Parallels b5 appears to be slightly slower than b4 - but that may be totally subjective. b4 booted XP in about 8 seconds, b5 now takes about the same time a normal XP boot takes on a PC (16 seconds).

The addition of shared folders is welcome, even though they show up under the network, not as a drive (as I somehow expected).

Also, copy/paste of text between Guest and OSX works - nice!

b5 now complains that VT-X is in use by another application - but I do not know which. It appears to work, though (read: it does not crash).

I've found out that Parallels has problems installing some games - prsumably due to copy protection. I've tried installing the venerable 'Red Alert 2', but failed. Installing the game under Boot Camp (Apple's beta for dual-boot into XP) worked.

Office XP installed without a problem, and works faster than my previous Windows 2000 Pro-based laptop (which was, admittedly, old).

I can recommend Parallels to anyone who needs basic Windows compatibility. Congratulations to the Parallels team - they have done a terrific job!

    "Quite nice!"

Version: Parallels Desktop for Mac 2.1b5

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.

Installed Window 98 SE: Installation went well, it's quite responsive on a 20" Intel iMac. It took a bit of 'work' mostly because the CD wasn't bootable and had to figure out a way to make a bootable floppy. Sound doesn't seem to work, but I'm assuming Win98 requires a sound driver that doesn't come with the basic install.

Installed Red Hat Fedora: 15 minutes, up and running complete with sound.

Will install Win 2K and probably get the sound function working with the right sound driver.

Parallels is exactly what Virtual PC was - only faster because it's not emulating the Intel chip. I was expecting to install some 'Admin' priveledge stuff, but it installs quite easily without any fancy code requiring the Admin password - it's like magic!

Tech support is forum based with lots of good information from other users. Having trouble? Visit the forum at http://parallels.com and your question is most likely been asked and answered.

Into gaming? You'll probably want to do the Apple boot camp route, but for everything else this product will run Windows (and Linux) nicely in a window.

Cons: It's a little rough around the edges, but that's to be expected from a beta. Developers seem to be very responsive to suggestions and improvements to the product.

My wish: I hope they don't 'sell out' to a big company like Virtual PC did otherwise we'll probably never see what this product will become - which I think it will be the 'one' for PC emulation on a Mac.

Congrats to the Parallels Team for a fine product!

    "I love Parallels!"

    April 27, 2006  |   By thebryceman

Version: Parallels Desktop for Mac 2.1b5

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have been using Parallels for about two weeks now and love it! The latest Beta 5 upgraded with no problems. I have only had two crashes in two weeks so am very happy.

I did have some problems enabling VT-X on a Core Duo Mac Mini, but in my case it seems that if I turn off Airport and just use the Ethernet connection then VT-X is enabled and active!

I only use it for cross platform checking of web sites and MS Office documents that I design and it screams along. I have now packed up my old Windoze machine and sent it off to the closet.

"Minor Glitches in Tools but otherwise AMAZING!!!"

Minus one star for lack of shared folders (in Win2K) and USB support but finally Windows on the Mac is usable while OS X is running.

Its FAST and gets better every couple days. Betas don't usually improve this much this fast. Fullscreen switching is cool just like fast user switching.

And I don't have to run XP!

    "All Mactels should have this!"

    April 18, 2006  |   By veggiedude--2008

Version: Parallels Desktop for Mac 2.1b4

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Macwintel is here, and the best way to have it done is thru Parallels Workstation. XP runs great, but my first attempt was with Windows 98, not much luck there. It seemed to only have 8 bit colour and no audio and no access to my wifi connection. I guess they wanted to fully support the most current OS, especially in this beta stage, which makes perfect sense. This is the most practical way to run Windows on your Mac and the speed on my 17" iMac is about 10 times faster than the Dell laptop I am forced to use this week at work. FANTASTIC!

Wish list: to share folders on the iMac as drives on the VM. Drag 'n' drop file sharing between the two desktops.
